Chapter 01: The Betrayal

“Shh... don’t wake our baby up…”

The pregnancy reports slipped from my trembling fingers, fluttering to the floor. Tears welling up in my eyes almost immediately.

Five years of marriage, five years of trying to conceive, on the very day I found out I was finally pregnant,

I witnessed my husband Killian sexing with no one other than Lyssandra–his widowed sister in-law.

And the three-year-old boy whom everyone thought was Killian's late brother-in-law's son, was actually his flesh and blood!

Kayla's POV

“Congratulations Luna Kayla, you're pregnant!” The hearty voice of the healer echoed through the space.

My body stiffened as my trembling hands found their way to my belly. The white walls of the room felt too small to contain my excitement.

I..I am pregnant? The barren wolfless Luna of Bright Dawn Pack was pregnant?

Shock wrapped my lungs, making it difficult to breathe but I still exhaled anyway.

Tears gathered at the corner of my eyes, “I'm pregnant,” I whispered, the words still sounding foreign on my lips.

The healer nodded, her lips spreading into a small smile, “Yes, you are.”

I breathed a laugh, stretching a trembling hand towards the healer. She handed me the reports, and I found my way out of her place.

My hands clutched the white paper in my hand like my life depended on it. I took a small turn, heading to my husband's room.

The thought of him jumping for joy, hugging me tightly and thanking the goddess for answering our prayers made me smile. I couldn't wait to tell him.

When I paced towards the room, Lyssandra–my sister in-law and best friend-came to mind.

She'd always been there for me, helping through those tough nights, assuring me that I'd get what I desire and defending me in front of fellow Lunas.

She'd even given me permission to be with Kael-her son-whenever I pleased. According to her, it was supposed to help me get familiar with children.

Even my husband wasn't available for me.

Lyssandra would be the first person to hear the news. And with that, I found my way back to the other side of the royal quarters.

As I walked through the passageway with floor to ceiling curtains, I heard distinct sounds coming from the distance.

Just then, my wolf stirred restlessly in my head, making me sense a strange feeling–like something bad was about to happen.

I ignored the thoughts, hastening my steps and the sounds grew louder, and more defined. My heart stopped for a second as I recognized the sounds.

They were moans.

And they were coming from…

I shook my head, could that really be?

Lyssandra had claimed she'd leave her bed undefiled until death. She wouldn't go back on her promise right?

The ominous feeling tightened in my chest, making me feel even more anxious. I slowed my breath, walking carefully towards the slightly opened door.

I peeked my head through the opening, finding Lyssandra moaning to a familiar figure’s strokes.

Dear goddess…was that Killian?

The scene before me sent betrayal running down my spine like ice. I forgot how to breathe as I watched them chasing pleasure from each other.

Killian rammed himself into her like an animal, making Lyssandra's moans grow stronger. My knees threatened to give out as my heart pumped pain through my entire system.

How could the two people whom I trusted the most in the world betray me like this? Why were they–

“Ahh–please be gentle so I don't moan loudly. Don't wake our precious baby,” Lyssandra muttered, her voice dying in another moan.

What?

Their baby?

My insides knotted as the sharp stabs of betrayal pierced through me, making my body tremble. As much as I wanted to doubt this, the evidence was staring me in the eye.

Kael was just a year old.

And that meant that this had been going on between them for a year. The whole time I'd been complaining to Lyssandra about how Killian was becoming cold, about how he no longer paid attention to me.

So she was the woman behind it?

Goddess help me, I might just lose my mind if I continued thinking about it.

I swallowed hard, my eyes burning from my focused stare. Even if I wanted to look away, I couldn't. Lyssandra's moans grew stronger and Killian's breathing grew ragged.

I watched them collapse onto each other as nausea took over my body, making my stomach churn endlessly.

They tangled themselves under the sheets, rubbing their faces against each other.

“I hope the plan is still on Killian. I wouldn't want to hear stories later,” Lyssandra mumbled as she drew circles on his bare chest.

Killian pressed a kiss on her forehead, “Of course. Kael will be my only heir. Besides, there's no way I can get another heir. I've been feeding Kayla contraceptives ever since you had Kael.”

Those words struck me like slaps, spiraling my body into weakness. My vision blurred into black and white, the world tilting as I lost balance. I quickly regained balance, holding onto the wall for support.

So the whole time I thought I was barren and incapable of bearing a child, it was never my fault?

The same man who claimed he loved me to no end, cared for me and respected me was responsible for my barrenness?

Really?

My head ached with pain as I stared into the room. Tears gathered at the corner of my eyes but I refused to let them fall. I took a deep breath, sprinting away from the room.

There was no particular direction for me, I just kept running, letting the tears flow as I ran.

As I reached the end of the passageway, I scrambled down the stairs. I'd just run down the fifth step when my ankle twisted, twisting my body in the air. My body crashed over the steps as I tumbled down.

The life inside of me was the only thing I could think of as I reached the last staircase.

The metallic smell of blood wafted through my nostrils. My body burned with heat and pain, and my hands curled around my belly.

Then everything went black.
