But I don’t play games—I mean forever.” She called off the engagement quietly and cut all contact with her ex. A month later, she was stunned to meet her mysterious husband: a handsome, billionaire heir. Chapter 1: Stood Up Three Times. She Finally Let Him Go

After Christopher Fontaine stood her up for the third time, Josephine Kirk stood outside the clerk’s office and dialed a number.

"Mr. Hargrove, I agree. We’ll get our marriage license in one month."

On the other end, a man’s voice came in fast. "Are you sure you’ve thought this through? Marriage isn’t a small thing, Ms. Kirk. As far as I know, you and Christopher still have an engagement agreement."

Josephine’s voice stayed steady. "Don’t worry. I’ll call off the engagement within two weeks."

Her engagement agreement with Christopher had long since become a joke to everyone.

Back then, Grandpa Fontaine and her parents had arranged the match. Later, her parents passed away. Grandpa Fontaine brought her into the Fontaine family and raised her, with the promise that when she turned twenty-one, she would marry Christopher and fulfill her parents’ wish.

But after her twenty-first birthday, when she brought up getting the marriage license, Christopher stood her up three times.

The last time, it was because Naomi Langdon had a birthday.

The time before that, it was Valentine’s Day, and Naomi got drunk and collapsed at a bar.

And this time, Naomi had a fever—one hundred point seven degrees.

In Christopher’s heart, getting married to her wasn’t as important as a single frown or smile from Naomi.

And yet, no matter how half-hearted Christopher was, he would never be the one to call off the engagement.

But since she’d decided to get the marriage license with Sebastian Hargrove in a month, she had to end this engagement—no matter what.

"As long as Ms. Kirk has thought it through." The man’s voice on the phone was low and magnetic. "But… I’ve heard you and Christopher are deeply involved. You should know the Hargrove family and the Fontaine family are like oil and water. And I’m not young anymore. A stable marriage matters to me. So I don’t want my wife to keep getting tangled up with an ex after we’re married."

The Hargrove family and the Fontaine family were both top-tier dynasties. On the surface they were polite enough, but behind closed doors, the tension was sharp.

That was exactly why Sebastian would choose to steal someone from the Fontaine side.

Josephine thought.

"It won’t happen." She lowered her eyes, but her tone was unshakably firm. "I’m not the type to go back for seconds."

The man seemed to let out a quiet chuckle. "Good. In one month, I’ll be back in the country. You have one month."

The call ended. Josephine took a cab back to the Fontaine estate.

The moment she got into the car, her screen lit up. Group chat notifications popped one after another.

The newest one was Naomi tagging her.

"Josephine, Christopher is such a mother hen. It’s just a little cold, and he insists I stay in the hospital."

A photo followed.

The girl lay on a hospital bed, frowning, her face slack with annoyance.

Beside her, Christopher coaxed her patiently to take her medicine, his eyes and brows full of tenderness.

Josephine stared at that scene, and something bitter and cold swept through her chest.

Christopher was famously beyond reach. He was always distant with women—cold and detached. Even Josephine, who could be called his childhood sweetheart, who grew up alongside him, was no exception.

So to move him, she’d learned to cook for him. She’d stayed up all night to take care of him. She’d even drawn blood for him after he got into trouble, risking her own life.

Later, she got what she wanted. He became her boyfriend, and then her fiancé.

But even so, after three years together, she had never seen this Christopher.

Naomi was the exception in Christopher’s life.

Josephine watched in silence for a long time before she finally came back to herself.

Everyone in the group saw it and couldn’t help teasing.

"So Christopher has a day like this too. The cold Valeford Crown Prince turns into a full-on mother hen in seconds."

"Only Naomi can make Christopher like that, right? Since they were kids, every time something happens to Naomi, Christopher turns into a different person."

"Not just that—doesn’t Josephine treat Naomi like a little sister too?"

Josephine did treat Naomi like a real little sister.

The Langdon family had been close friends with her parents. They’d moved overseas before, and only returned to Valeford a year ago.

Josephine was two years older. Because of the bond their parents once shared, she’d taken extra care of Naomi.

But no one ever told her Naomi had been Christopher’s first love. No one told her Naomi had gone abroad because she’d fought with Christopher.

And no one told her Christopher had finally agreed to be her boyfriend because she had a face that resembled Naomi by thirty percent.

In the group chat, someone quickly sensed something was off.

"Wait—wasn’t Josephine supposed to go get the marriage license with Christopher today? If Christopher’s at the hospital with Naomi, then the clerk’s office…"
