Chapter 1 Pregnancy Test

Fifteen minutes.

The wait for the pregnancy test results felt like an eternity.

After fifteen long minutes, Serena Winter didn't see the second line indicating pregnancy.

What a relief!

She stood up, wrapped the pregnancy test and the used tissue paper in her bag, and sighed with relief.

James Forrest had been away on a business trip for half a month, and upon his return, his performance in bed was remarkable.

It left Serena without appetite all day, tossing and turning between sleep and wakefulness. In a daze, she picked up her phone and realized it had been more than twenty-four hours since they had broken the condom.

She searched the entire room but couldn't find any emergency contraceptive pills. She had no choice but to rush downstairs to buy them. As soon as she exited the supermarket, she swallowed them, hoping it wasn't too late.

What if she was pregnant? The thought haunted her for a whole month.

Technically, her husband, William Forrest, had passed away three years ago, so even if she had new feelings for someone else, it shouldn't be a problem.

But... would her new relationship allow her to have a child?

The answer was undoubtedly no.

Her relationship with James was already messy enough. Bringing another child into the picture would only make things worse.

James was only out for revenge; he wouldn't involve himself any further.

Serena turned on the tap, washing her hands harder and harder until they turned red. The sink filled with water, reflecting her pale, gaunt face, looking haggard and anxious.

It was unbearable.

She looked up at the grand, spacious bathroom of the Forrest family mansion, the mirror reflecting her exhausted face.

Three years had passed, but when would this kind of life come to an end?

Serena collected herself, adjusting her expression. Today, there was a family banquet at the old mansion, with a house full of relatives and friends. She couldn't afford to be delayed for too long.

Stepping outside, she took a deep breath and made her way to the banquet hall on the ground floor.

The Forrest family held a family banquet at least once every season. Old Forrest loved festivities and placed great importance on family. After his eldest son, William, passed away, he became even more concerned about his family, which was why even someone as unwelcome as Serena, the widow of his eldest son, had to attend.

Would everything be different if William were still alive?

Yes, undoubtedly. If he were still alive, they might not have gotten married at all, then...

"Ahh!"

A hand wrapped around Serena's waist from behind, while another covered her mouth. A sturdy chest pressed against her back, and the faint scent of pine filled her nostrils. Serena froze as she was dragged into a room beside the corridor.

The man pinned her against the door, his voice harsh in her ear, "Darling sister-in-law, I've missed you."

"James!"

"This is the ancestral home, you should call me ‘Fifth Brother’."

"You know this is the ancestral home! Is this how you treat your elders?"

In the darkness, James chuckled coldly, " An elder two years younger than me? You don't look like an elder in this state."

With that, he stuck out his tongue and licked her neck.

Serena shuddered all over, a whimper escaping her lips. "Serena, don't disgust me," James said.

"Who's disgusting who?!" Serena retorted.

The room was dimly lit by moonlight filtering through the window. James was backlit, so Serena could only see his silhouette. His hair stood stiff, and his trousers were pushed into an odd shape. He seemed to be in a bad mood.

Serena breathed out slowly. "Fifth brother, let me go."

She called James as he requested, but it didn't appease him. Instead, James tightened his grip on her wrist, even lifting something up with his free hand.

"What's this, sister-in-law?" Serena turned her gaze to see a shape in the moonlight. She instantly felt her heart in her throat.

Seeing her silence, James laughed. "A pregnancy test, sister-in-law. Are you planning to expand the Forrest family by giving birth to a baby?"

"James!!!"

"Hey, third sister-in-law, did you hear something?" The voice of Wendy, fourth sister-in-law, sounded from outside the door, very close by. Serena's face turned pale.

James quickly pulled her into his arms, turning his back against the door. "No, what sound?"

"It sounded like someone calling James's name."

"James is now the chairman and CEO of Golden Sincerity Group. Many people will be calling his name today. Nothing strange about that."

"No, I... never mind, I might have misheard. Let's go."

Footsteps resumed and soon quieted down.

Serena was held tightly by James, listening to his rapid heartbeat. He was clearly nervous too. Despite his tough talk, his body betrayed his true feelings; he was worried about their relationship being exposed.

Serena couldn't describe her emotions. Impatiently, she said, "They're gone, can you let me go now?"

James slowly turned his head. This time, he was facing the moonlight, and Serena could see his bright eyes clearly.

"What did the test show?"

"What do you think I tested for?"

His heartbeat quickened again. Without waiting for him to speak, Serena continued, "Nothing. I'm not pregnant. You can relax."

"Don't you think I want you to be pregnant?"

Serena closed her eyes for a moment before opening them again, looking at James calmly. "Does that question even matter? Can you marry me, Mr. Forrest?"

James fell silent for a moment, then smiled. "Sister-in-law is right."

Serena's heart skipped a beat. She pushed him away. "Today is a family banquet. Let's give your father face. Let's not disgust each other."

With that, she turned the doorknob and opened the door. The corridor was empty. She took the opportunity to walk out, quickly descending the stairs. The atmosphere of the banquet hit her as she reached the lower floor. A maid greeted her, "Mrs. Serena, Miss Shirly is urgently looking for you to play mahjong in the flower hall."

"Alright, I'll go there right away."

Shirley Forrest, the second child of the Forrest family, warmly wrapped her arm around Serena as soon as she saw her. She kept talking excitedly, "Where have you been? You have to cooperate with me later. I must win back a game from that girl, or else my title as the 'god of mahjong' will be in jeopardy!"

"Alright, I'll do my best."

At the mahjong table surrounded by relatives, seeing Shirley bring Serena over, Annie, the third sister-in-law chuckled, "Finally, we have some help."

Serena quickly sat down and started picking tiles, listening to their idle chatter.

"In my opinion, how could the Lu family possibly compete with our Forrest family? I can only advise her to let it go. After all, James was a bit too much. Grabbing that piece of land was a bit unfair," one of them remarked.

"In the business world, there's no such thing as fairness. Haven't you noticed that the old Mr. Forrest hasn't said a word about it?" another replied.

"Of course, the old Mr. Forrest won't say anything. Golden Sincerity Group has flourished under James's leadership in recent years. Everyone outside is saying that Junior Forrest is even better than the original. I always said James was more suitable to be the successor than William!" Annie chimed in. Shirley nudged her, and she quickly added, "Oh, come on, let's focus on the game."

Serena smiled faintly, her mind not on the game but on the conversation in the living room. James had come down after they had played the second round of mahjong, becoming the center of attention.

In the midst of their conversation, she faintly heard two words: engagement. Her intuition told her it had something to do with James, making her even more distracted.

"Serena, are you... giving away tiles that easily? I can't accept losing like this!" Annie shook her head.

Serena snapped out of her thoughts and chuckled, "Sorry, it's not about the tiles. I'm just a bit tired."

"How's your mother's illness? Maybe you should consider changing hospitals..." the conversation continued.

Ding ding ding, the sound of Annie tapping her glass was abruptly interrupted by the sound of another glass being tapped. Everyone turned to see Wendy entering the room, holding a glass in one hand and something familiar in the other.

"Everyone, I have a big discovery," Wendy said mysteriously. "I found a pregnancy test upstairs."
