LILY
After three years of trying, I finally conceived the heir of the pack.
But when I prepared to share this good news with my mate Maxwell, his words turned my world upside down.
“I want a divorce.”
"Divorce?"
I stared at Maxwell in disbelief, my hands trembling as I took the divorce papers he handed me. "W-why?"
We were destined mates. We were married for three years, and we'd always been deeply in love, cherishing each other’s presence all the time.
"Scarlett's back. She's returned to the pack."
Those few words left me breathless. Scarlett, my half-sister, Maxwell's first love.
She had disappeared from our lives three years ago, but now she was back.
"But Maxwell, you two broke up long ago, and I'm your mate. You promised to love me forever..." I searched his face, trying to understand what he was thinking, but he had built an impenetrable wall around his heart, blocking out our mate bond.
"Our marriage was a mistake from the beginning," Maxwell said coldly. "Back then, my father forced me to marry you, but now I don't want to be bound by the Goddess's arrangement. I think destined mates is a meaningless concept."
A mistake?
Meaningless concept?
I repeated these words silently in my heart, fighting back my tears. My heart felt like it was being stabbed continuously. My wolf, too, howled in pain.
I never thought one day, our three-year marriage would become just a mistake in his eyes.
So who did he think was the right person for him? Scarlett?
I knew better than anyone how shrewd and pretentious Scarlett was.
"Scarlett's only pretending to be in love with you because you're the Alpha of the pack. Her feelings for you are nothing like mine..."
BANG! With a thunderous crash, Maxwell kicked over the table.
The table slammed against the wooden floor with a deafening sound, leaving me frozen in shock.
"What about you then? Didn't you just want to become the Luna of this pack? You knew about my history with Scarlett, yet you accepted this marriage proposal shamelessly! You stole your sister's man and betrayed her! You lied to me, Lily. She has told me everything!"
"What?! No, that's not true. Let me explain..." I took a step forward to reach out and hold his hand.
"Don't push me, Lily, and keep those filthy hands away. If I'd known you intentionally drove Scarlett away, I would never have married you!"
My chest tightened as I stared at Maxwell, shocked and heartbroken.
So he never trusted me. Yes, I had hoped Scarlett would leave, but I never forced her to do anything.
He didn't understand that I had been in love with him even before he became an Alpha.
"Sign these papers soon. I don't want to drag this out." He lit a cigarette, speaking to me impatiently. Looking at his demeanor, I understood he didn’t even want to see my face.
I clutched the documents tightly, my tears falling onto the papers, blurring the words.
"What were you going to tell me earlier?" he suddenly seemed to recall something and asked me.
"It doesn't matter anymore... Forget it," my voice shook terribly. I had planned to tell him about the pregnancy before he came home. I thought his happiness would know no bounds, but it didn't matter anymore.
"I'll give you enough money to support yourself. If you have nowhere to go, you can even stay in the pack. After all, we were married for quite some time," he said.
"No need. Let's leave it at that. I'll sign these papers soon." My heart was breaking into a million pieces at that moment, but I struggled to maintain my composure. I didn’t want to appear weak. I couldn’t appear weak.
If he'd felt our mate bond, he could have easily felt my pain and heartbreak, but he didn't. If this was the ending he chose for me, so be it.
I hardened my resolve and turned around to leave the room, tears streaming down my face, but a part of me was silently begging him to stop me and not to let me leave.
“Wait,” he said, all of a sudden.
