Chapter 1: The Rejection

(Mia’s POV)

The moon hung high above Silver shade territory, glowing cold and full in the night sky. The clearing sparkled under its light, like a sacred stage set for something beautiful. But all I felt was dread.

Tonight was supposed to be a blessing.

The Moon Ceremony, where fated mates were revealed, celebrated, claimed.

But I stood alone.

My hands trembled slightly at my sides, clenched into fists I couldn’t stop shaking. My long dark hair fluttered in the breeze, my bare feet were cold against the sacred ground, and my heart…

My heart was already breaking.

All eyes were on me. Silent, and waiting.

They always watched me this way,as though waiting for me to fail, to prove that I didn’t belong. I had grown used to the stars. The whispers, the pity. But not tonight.

Tonight was supposed to change everything.

Because I had been blessed with a mate.

A fated mate.

Alpha Xander Benwood

My wolf still purred at the sound of his name, though tonight, even she was nervous.

Xander stepped into the center of the circle, his tall figure commanding attention.

The Alpha aura rolled off him in waves. I could still remember the moment I felt the bond click between us, it was powerful, and, undeniable.

He was mine and I was his.

Wasn’t I?

But then his silver eyes met mine.

Cold,empty,distant.At once,my soul froze.

“Mia Karl,” he said. His voice was deep, calm. Too calm. “I reject you… as my mate.”

I was taking back. “No,you can't do this to me"

The words echoed in my mind, over and over, but I couldn’t say it out loud.

I couldn’t say anything.

My mouth opened instinctively, but as always, no sound came.

The rejection hit like a physical blow, sharp and sudden, I stumbled slightly but caught myself.

Gasps filled the air,a ripple of shock spread through the crowd, but no one moved.

Not even him.

My chest ached as my breathing turned shallow.

The bond, the magical thread that tied our souls together snapped like a branch underfoot.

The pain was invisible, but it felt like being torn apart from the inside.

And still, I stood tall, shocked and still silent because I was always silent.

His eyes flickered. For one heartbeat, I thought I saw regret,or even, guilt. But then it vanished.

“This pack does not need a weak Luna,” he continued, louder now. “Especially one who cannot even speak to command.”

The words crushed me.

I felt every stare dig into my skin like claws.

I wasn’t just being rejected, I was being humiliated, and not from anyone, but from my mate?

My hand rose to my chest, gripping the Moonstone pendant that once belonged to my mother. It burned against my skin, mocking me.

I wanted to scream, but all I could do was swallow the scream and stare at the man who had just shattered me.

Beta Kanny stepped forward, speaking to Xander in a low voice. “Alpha… you know what the legends said about rejecting a fated mate? there are consequences to it.”

Xander didn’t look at him.

“The pack comes first,” he said. “She’s not fit.” and just like that, my fate was sealed.

I was nothing.

No voice, no mate, nor a place.

My knees wobbled while my wolf howled inside me,mourning what we had just lost.

But I would not collapse. I wouldn’t give them the satisfaction.

I turned my back to him and I walked away.

The crowd parted silently as I passed, but no one reached for me,no one tried to stop me.

Not even him.

The forest welcomed me like an old friend as I fled the clearing.

The moment I crossed the outer boundary, I ran.

I didn’t know where I was going,I just knew I had to go.

Branches whipped against my skin, my feet bled from sharp rocks, but I didn’t stop.

I didn’t feel pain.

I only felt numbness.

Just that cold sting of betrayal piercing through my chest.

Later that night, I didn’t know how long I had been running.

Time blurred and the forest grew darker, denser.

My legs finally gave out, and I collapsed at the base of an ancient tree.

My body ached but my heart ached more.

I curled up in the dirt, wrapping my arms around myself like it might stop me from falling apart. My pendant dug into my collarbone.

I didn’t care.

Tears filled my eyes and spilled over.

Why?

Why would the Moon Goddess bind me to a mate only to have him reject me?

Why give me something just to rip it away?

I looked up at the moon, full and bright. It didn’t comfort me. It judged me. Silent, just like me.

I closed my eyes.

I didn’t hear the footsteps.

But I felt them.

A shift in the wind.

A pulse in the earth and the whisper of danger crawled up my spine.

I was tense.

A new scent filled the air, wild, sharp, and powerful.

I opened my eyes and there he was.

He stood at the edge of the trees, tall and shadowed in moonlight. His presence was undeniable, powerful and dark.

The Alpha?

But…..not my Alpha.

His voice sliced through the silence like a blade dipped in honey.

“Well, well,” he said, stepping closer. “What do we have here?”

I scrambled backward, heart thundering in my chest.

His eyes glinted, not silver like Xander’s,but black and bottomless.

“You must be her,” he said smoothly.

“The rejected one.”

I stiffened.

He crouched to my level, and though I hated it,I didn’t move. Something in his presence rooted me to the ground.

“I’m Alpha Darius Rucker,” he said, offering a slow, twisted smile. “And you, little wolf… are just what I’ve been looking for.”

I stared at him, every instinct screaming that this wasn’t safe.

This was something else.

Something worse.
