Seed of Betrayal

The hospital lights were too white…a kind of sterile brightness that made Rayna's stomach churn. She lay on the cold metallic table, her knees propped up in the stirrups, a thin paper gown wrapped tightly around her shaking body. Machines beeped quietly in the background. The sterile air stank of antiseptic and magic. But she kept her breathing even. Steady. Controlled.

"Are you sure about this?" the nurse asked gently, her gloved hand resting briefly on Rayna's shoulder.

Rayna nodded. "I'm sure."

Her voice didn’t waver, though her insides twisted like knots in a rope. The nurse gave her a long, searching look, then turned and motioned to the doctor.

Moments later, the door opened and a tall man entered…silver-haired, unsmiling, his eyes veiled behind enchanted lenses. He looked more like a necromancer than a fertility doctor. But Rayna knew why. She knew exactly who was behind this operation. Wolves didn’t trust easily. Especially not when royalty was involved.

"We will begin now," the doctor said. His voice was cold, distant. Detached. He held up a sealed vial…no markings, no identifiers…and loaded it into the long silver syringe.

Rayna's breath hitched. This was it. Once they did this, there was no undoing it.

She closed her eyes and whispered a silent prayer to the Moon Goddess, though she wasn’t even sure the Goddess listened to hybrids.

The cold tip of the syringe pressed against her, and she inhaled sharply as the magical energy surged through her body the moment the insemination spell was cast. It was unlike anything she’d ever felt. A ripple of heat, a tingle in her core, then stillness. Finality.

"The implantation is complete," the doctor said, disposing of the instrument.

Rayna lay still, staring at the ceiling as though it could offer answers. She felt... different. Not physically. Emotionally. A line had been crossed.

"You may rest here for an hour before discharge," the nurse said, covering her with a soft blanket. "The potion will be administered shortly to encourage successful bonding."

Rayna nodded, dazed. She barely heard the rest of the instructions.

She wasn’t doing this for herself. It was for Luca. Always for Luca.

She could still see his face in her mind, his boyish smile, the way his eyes crinkled when he called her ‘little firecracker.’ He didn’t know what she was doing. She couldn’t tell him. The surrogacy contract forbade it, and even if it hadn’t, she didn’t know how to explain it. That she was carrying a stranger’s child. That she was doing it to pay for his schooling.

He wanted to be an Alpha. Not of a pack, but a leader among wolves in Silvermist Academy. Tuition was brutal. She wasn’t from money. And jobs for someone with her secret... well, they didn’t exist.

No one could know she wasn’t just a wolf.

No one could know she was also a vampire.

Even saying it in her head made her skin crawl.

After an hour, the nurse returned and handed her a vial of glowing amber liquid. “Drink this before dawn.”

Rayna tucked the potion into her bag and slid off the table. Her limbs felt stiff, her body sore, but she was eager to get out of the hospital. She dressed in silence, tied her hair into a braid, and walked out the back exit into the night.

The wind was cool, crisp with the scent of autumn pine. She wrapped her coat tighter around herself, her boots crunching on the gravel as she started down the hill toward the train station.

It was a long ride to Ironfang Ridge, where Luca lived. She could have waited until morning, but she didn’t want to. She wanted to see him now. She needed to see his face when she handed him the pouch of coins she’d received upfront. A deposit. Enough to cover two semesters. The rest would come after the birth.

She pressed her hand against the front of her coat where the money pouch was hidden.

This would change their lives. He’d promised to mate her. To claim her before the Moon Goddess. She’d done this for them.

For love.

The train screeched into the station just as she arrived. Rayna hopped on, found a corner seat, and watched the dark forest blur past through the window. Her reflection stared back at her…green eyes glowing faintly, betraying her mixed blood. She closed them.

No one could ever know.

An hour later, she reached Ironfang Ridge and jogged through the sleepy streets until she reached the apartment complex at the edge of town. Luca’s place was on the third floor, in a building that always smelled like burnt coffee and wet dog.

She smiled as she climbed the stairs.

Her heart thudded with anticipation.

She reached his door.

Slightly ajar.

She frowned.

"Luca?" she called, pushing it open.

The lights were off. Only the flickering glow of a single lamp lit the room. She stepped inside slowly, confusion pinching her brows.

Then she heard it.

A moan.

Soft. Feminine. Breathless.

Rayna froze.

No.

Please, Moon Goddess, no.

Another moan. Louder. Then the unmistakable sound of flesh on flesh. A rhythmic slapping that made bile rise in her throat.

She moved forward, her steps slow, hesitant. Her heart slammed against her ribs.

The bedroom door was half-closed.

She pushed it open.

And the world tilted.

There he was.

Luca. Her Luca. Naked. Covered in sweat. His hands gripping another she-wolf’s hips as he pounded into her from behind.

The girl…a brunette with a tribal pack tattoo on her lower back, threw her head back and let out a giggle.

Rayna stood frozen.

They hadn’t seen her yet.

She felt the air leave her lungs.

Then, like instinct, her hand reached for the pouch in her coat. She pulled it out. The gold shimmered in the dim light.

Her voice came out sharp. Choked. “Luca.”

He stopped mid-thrust.

His head whipped around.

His eyes went wide.

The girl gasped and scrambled to cover herself with the sheets.

Rayna stepped into the room, slow, trembling, holding the pouch of coins up like a blade.

“I came to give you this.”

Luca didn’t move. Sweat dripped from his forehead. His chest heaved.

“What the hell are you doing here?” he asked, voice rough.

“I did something,” Rayna whispered. “For us. For you. To pay your tuition. You said if you finished school, you’d mate me. You said you loved me.”

The girl beside him shifted awkwardly. “Maybe I should go…”

“Stay,” Luca barked. His eyes locked onto Rayna’s. “You shouldn’t have come unannounced.”

Rayna stared at him. “Unannounced?”

“It’s not what it looks like,” he said, stepping forward.

She laughed. Cold. Bitter.

“It’s exactly what it looks like. I…I did something today, Luca. Something huge. I thought we were in this together.”

His face twisted. “You’re always so intense, Rayna. Everything’s a sacrifice with you. Always playing martyr.”

She felt the burn behind her eyes. But she refused to let tears fall.

She held out the pouch. “Here. Take it. It’s enough for two semesters. Paid in gold. I thought it would make you happy.”

He didn’t take it.

She dropped it at his feet.

The clink of coins echoed like a death knell.

The other girl slipped off the bed and began gathering her clothes, but Rayna didn’t look at her. Only him.

Only the boy she’d loved.

Only the boy she’d bled for.

The boy she’d just given up her body for.

She turned around.

Her legs felt like stone, but she walked out of the apartment without a word.

The sting of betrayal carved itself deep into her bones.

And inside her womb, the Alpha's seed stirred quietly in her belly, completely unaware that her world had just shattered.
