Moonlight Hearts
Lila runs into the forest, her sneakers slipping on wet leaves as she runs from Ethan. Her backpack thumps against her back, packed with clothes, a photo of her mom, and an old pendant he gave her. His shouts echo behind her, yelling her name, closer than she wants. Her heart pounds so hard she thinks it’ll burst, and she dodges branches, desperate to escape her ex. She grips a pocketknife in her jacket pocket, knowing it’s not much use against him.
A deep growl stops her, and three huge wolves step out from the trees. Their yellow eyes lock on her, and she yanks out her knife, hands shaking. She backs up, but her foot catches a root, and she crashes to the ground, dirt smearing her jeans. The wolves circle closer, their teeth bared, ready to attack. Lila holds up the knife, her breath coming in quick gasps.
“Stop!” a voice shouts, and a tall guy steps into the moonlight, his black hair messy. He wears a leather jacket and jeans, staring straight at Lila. Two others appear—one with brown hair and a grin, the other with a scarred jaw and sharp eyes. Lila feels a weird tug in her chest, like something pulling her toward them. She doesn’t know why, but she can’t look away from their faces.
“Who are you, and why are you here?” the guy with black hair asks, stepping closer. Lila stammers, “I’m running from someone—my ex!” The brown-haired guy tilts his head, watching her like he’s curious. The scarred guy smirks, his eyes staying on her. “You don’t just walk into Blackwood Pack lands,” the leader says, his voice hard.
The scarred guy nods at Lila’s shoulder, where her jacket is torn. “She has a mark,” he says, pointing to a crescent-moon scar she’s had forever. Lila pulls her sleeve down, her face hot as they all stare at her. The brown-haired guy steps closer, saying, “That’s not a normal mark.” Lila shakes her head and mutters, “I don’t know what you mean.”
Lila stands up, still holding her knife, trying to make sense of everything. These guys talk about wolves and marks like it’s no big deal. “I’m just a human!” she snaps, taking a step back. The leader, Asher, narrows his eyes, and the brown-haired guy, Zane, gives her a small nod. The scarred guy, Rowan, watches her, his face impossible to read.
Asher moves closer, and Lila’s chest tightens, that tug feeling stronger now. “You’re staying until we figure you out,” he says, his voice leaving no room for argument. Zane touches her arm, and a jolt shoots through her, like a spark hitting her skin. Rowan stays back, but his eyes make her nervous, like he sees something she doesn’t. Lila wants to run, but her legs feel heavy, stuck in place.
They start walking through the forest, Asher leading with long strides. Zane stays next to her, his shoulder brushing hers, making her heart skip a beat. Rowan follows behind, silent but always watching, his boots crunching on leaves. Lila grips her knife tighter, not sure if she trusts these guys. The wolves trail them, their eyes glowing in the dark, keeping pace.
They reach a clearing with wooden cabins, their windows glowing with light. An older woman, Mira, steps out of one and stares at Lila’s shoulder. “She’s not human,” Mira says, her voice low, making Lila’s stomach twist. Asher glances at Zane and Rowan, his face tense, like he’s worried. Lila feels like she’s walked into something she can’t escape.
Lila follows Asher to a big cabin, her legs shaky from all the running. Zane opens the door, his hand brushing her back as she steps inside. Rowan leans against a tree outside, his eyes never leaving her. Lila clutches her backpack, thinking about Ethan and how close he might be. She doesn’t understand why these guys make her feel both safe and scared.
Inside the cabin, Asher sits across from her, his eyes sharp and focused. “Who’s chasing you?” he asks, leaning forward on the table. Lila takes a breath and says, “My ex, Ethan—he’s bad news.” Zane sits nearby, listening quietly, while Rowan stands by the door, arms crossed. That tug in her chest grows stronger, pulling her toward all three of them.
Zane smiles at her, trying to make her feel better. “You’re safe with us,” he says, his voice soft and calm. Lila nods, but her hands shake as she thinks of Ethan out there. Rowan shifts his weight, his boots loud on the wooden floor. Lila wonders why he’s so quiet, like he’s keeping secrets.
Asher checks the cabin’s windows, like he’s expecting trouble any second. “We don’t let strangers stay here,” he says, looking at Lila. She wants to argue, but her throat feels tight, and she just nods. Zane pats her shoulder, and that jolt hits her again, making her pull away. Lila feels confused, not understanding why she reacts to them like this.
Mira comes into the cabin, holding a book with strange symbols on it. “That mark means something,” she says, pointing at Lila’s shoulder. Lila asks, “What is it?” but Mira shakes her head and says, “Not now.” Asher tells Lila she’s staying in his cabin for safety. Lila agrees, too tired to fight, and sits on a cot in the corner.
Lila opens her backpack, looking for her mom’s photo to calm her nerves. The pendant Ethan gave her years ago falls out, glowing faintly in the dim light. She gasps, hiding it quickly as Zane glances over. Her heart races, not knowing why the pendant’s doing that. She feels like it’s connected to something big, something dangerous.
A loud gunshot cracks through the night, and the wolves outside start howling. Lila jumps up, her knife in hand, her pulse hammering. Asher grabs her arm, pulling her toward the door, his grip strong. Zane runs outside, shouting for the others, and Rowan’s already gone, vanished into the dark. Lila hears Ethan’s voice, yelling her name from the trees.
“Lila! You can’t hide!” Ethan shouts, his voice way too close. Asher growls, “Hunters,” and his eyes flash with anger. Zane pulls Lila behind him, his body tense, ready to fight. Rowan reappears, holding a knife, his eyes sharp and focused. Lila’s stomach drops, realizing Ethan’s not alone out there.
Lila looks at Zane, noticing something in his pocket. It’s a pendant, exactly like the one Ethan gave her, glinting in the moonlight. She freezes, her mind racing with questions about how he got it. Asher pulls her toward the trees, his hand tight on her arm. Zane stays close, checking behind them, his face serious now.
The wolves howl louder, their cries echoing through the clearing. Rowan moves ahead, his steps silent, like he knows the forest better than anyone. Lila’s heart pounds, and her mark starts to itch, like it’s trying to tell her something. She grips her knife, feeling like she’s in over her head. A shadow moves in the trees, and she squints to see it clearly.
A wolf leaps into the clearing, bigger than the others, wearing a red band around its neck. It’s not one of the Blackwood wolves, and its eyes lock on Lila. Asher pushes her behind him, shouting, “Ironclaw!” The wolf charges, its teeth bared, aiming straight for her. Lila raises her knife, her hands shaking, as the pack prepares for a fight.
