Twenty-three-year-old Luna Sage thought she had found her forever when Alpha Marcus Grey chose her as his mate, despite not being fated. For three years, she served the Silverpine Pack with unwavering devotion, believing their bond transcended destiny. But when Marcus returns from a diplomatic mission with Celeste Nightfall—his true fated mate—Luna's world crumbles in the cruelest betrayal imaginable. Cast out and framed for treason, Luna becomes a rogue wolf with nothing left to lose. When rival Alpha Kieran Blackthorn—Marcus's sworn enemy—finds her broken and betrayed, their initial hatred ignites into something far more dangerous. What begins as a marriage of mutual revenge slowly transforms into a love neither expected, even as Luna's heart still bleeds for the man who destroyed her. But Marcus realizes too late what he's lost. Haunted by his betrayal and desperate for redemption, he'll fight everyone—including Kieran—to win back the woman he should never have let go. As rogue wolves threaten the supernatural world and ancient enemies emerge from the shadows, Luna must choose between the man who broke her heart but seeks redemption, and the enemy who became her salvation. Chapter 0001: The Return

The howls echoing through the Silverpine territory should have filled Luna with joy. After six months away on pack business, Marcus was finally coming home. Instead, dread pooled in her stomach as she stood on the packhouse balcony, watching the convoy of black SUVs wind up the mountain road.

"Luna, they're here!" Mia, her closest friend and the pack's head healer, called from behind her. "Aren't you excited? Marcus has been gone for so long."

Luna forced a smile, turning away from the view. "Of course. I should go welcome him properly."

The last video call with Marcus was three weeks ago. He'd seemed distant, distracted, always cutting their conversations short with excuses about meetings and negotiations with the Northern packs. Something had changed, but Luna couldn't put her finger on it.

She'd been Alpha Marcus Grey's chosen mate for three years now. When he'd selected her at nineteen—a packless wolf who'd sought refuge with Silverpine—the pack had been surprised but accepting. Marcus had been adamant that their connection transcended the mystical pull of fated mates.

"You understand me, Luna," he'd said during their mating ceremony. "You see the leader I want to be, not just the Alpha I was born to be. That's worth more than any moon goddess blessing."

Those words had carried her through the challenges of being a chosen mate rather than a fated one. While some pack members whispered that she could never compare to a true mate bond, Marcus had always defended their relationship fiercely.

Until now.

Luna smoothed her emerald dress—Marcus's favorite color—and made her way to the main entrance. The pack had gathered in the great hall, excitement buzzing through the air. Beta Jackson stood near the doors with several warriors, while the elders occupied their usual spots near the fireplace.

The massive oak doors swung open, and Marcus strode in with his usual commanding presence. At six-foot-four with dark hair and piercing amber eyes, he still took Luna's breath away. But her smile faltered when she noticed the figure walking beside him.

A woman with silvery-white hair and ethereal beauty moved with the fluid grace of someone born to leadership. Her ice-blue eyes surveyed the room with cool assessment, and when they landed on Luna, something flickered there—recognition, perhaps, or calculation.

"My pack," Marcus announced, his voice carrying easily through the hall. "I'm pleased to be home. This diplomatic mission has resulted in a crucial alliance with the Northern packs." He paused, his gaze finding Luna's across the room. For a moment, warmth flickered in his eyes, but it was quickly replaced by something else. "I'd like you all to meet Celeste Nightfall, daughter of Alpha Nightfall of the Frost Moon pack. She'll be staying with us as a liaison to strengthen our new partnership."

Polite applause filled the room, but Luna barely heard it over the thundering of her heartbeat. The way Marcus had looked at Celeste, the protective stance he'd unconsciously taken beside her—Luna had seen these signs before, when other pack members found their fated mates.

"Luna," Marcus approached her, and she noticed he didn't use his usual endearment of calling her 'my heart.' "You look beautiful."

"Welcome home," she managed, accepting his brief embrace. His scent was different—still the familiar pine and leather, but now mixed with something floral and foreign. Celeste's scent.

Over Marcus's shoulder, Luna caught Celeste watching them with an unreadable expression.

The evening feast passed in a blur of forced smiles and polite conversation. Luna played her role as the perfect Luna, ensuring everyone was fed and comfortable, but she couldn't shake the feeling that everything was wrong.

It wasn't until later, when she and Marcus were finally alone in their quarters, that her worst fears were confirmed.

"We need to talk," Marcus said, his back to her as he stared out the window.

Luna's hands trembled as she set down her jewelry. "About what?"

"About Celeste." He turned to face her, and the pain in his eyes nearly brought her to her knees. "Luna, she's... she's my fated mate."

The words hit her like a physical blow. Luna gripped the dresser for support, her reflection in the mirror showing a face drained of color.

"Your fated mate," she repeated numbly.

"Yes." Marcus ran his hands through his hair—a gesture she knew meant he was struggling. "I felt it the moment I met her. The bond, the pull... everything they say about fated mates is true."

Silence stretched between them, heavy with three years of shared memories and promises.

"So what does this mean for us?" Luna finally asked, surprised by how steady her voice sounded.

Marcus closed the distance between them, reaching for her hands. "Nothing has to change, Luna. You're still my chosen mate, still the Luna of this pack. Celeste understands—"

"Understands what, exactly?" Luna pulled her hands free. "That she'll be sharing her fated mate with another woman? That I'll be expected to smile and pretend my heart isn't breaking while you follow the moon goddess's will?"

"It's not like that—"

"Then what is it like, Marcus?" The dam holding back her emotions finally cracked. "Because from where I'm standing, it looks like I'm about to become the other woman in my relationship."

Marcus's jaw tightened. "You're being dramatic. Our bond is strong, Luna. What Celeste and I have... It's biological. What you and I have is real."

The irony wasn't lost on her. For three years, she'd defended their chosen bond against those who claimed fated mates were superior. Now, Marcus was essentially telling her that what they had was somehow lesser than his connection with Celeste.

"If our bond is so real and strong," Luna said quietly, "then reject her. Choose me, like you did three years ago."

The silence that followed told her everything she needed to know.

"I can't," Marcus whispered. "Luna, you don't understand. The political implications alone—"

"Get out."

"What?"

"Get out of our room. I need time to think." Luna turned away from him, facing the mirror that now showed a woman she barely recognized—hollow-eyed and defeated.

"Luna, please—"

"Just go, Marcus. Please."

She heard him hesitate, heard him take a step toward her, then stop. The soft click of the door closing behind him echoed like a gunshot in the sudden quiet.

Luna stared at her reflection until her vision blurred with unshed tears. Three years of building a life, a partnership, a future—all of it crumbling because of one woman and a bond blessed by the moon goddess.

Tomorrow, she would have to face the pack, face Celeste, and pretend that her world hadn't just imploded. But tonight, for the first time since becoming Luna of the Silverpine Pack, she allowed herself to break.

Outside, a wolf howled in the distance—a lonely, mournful sound that echoed the ache in her chest.
