Chapter 1

ISABELLA'S POINT OF VIEW

“I told you from the beginning, she’s nothing but a useless wife. You should’ve divorced her already, son!”

Those painful words from my mother-in-law, Mrs. Hart, woke me up in this hospital bed, and at that moment, my tears threatened to fall. But despite the pain from hearing her words, I remained calm when I saw my husband, Ezekiel, approaching.

“You’re awake,” he said, coldly.

“Yeah... why am I here?” I asked.

“You passed out earlier so I brought you to the nearest hospital,” he said.

“Thank you,” I replied with a faint smile.

“I’m so very disappointed, Isabella” he snapped, voice rising.

I was shocked when the tone of his voice started to rise but I forced myself to calm down. I just looked at his eyes while he’s saying those words and at the same time kept my tears from falling. How could he say that I disappointed him when I already did everything just to serve him as my husband?

I cleaned, cooked, served. I endured his family’s insults and never complained. And now, I disappointed him?

“Why would you say that? What did I do to disappoint you, Ezekiel?” I asked, my voice trembling.

“You’re not blind,” he hissed. “Stop acting like a fool.”

He stepped closer, frustration burning in his eyes.

“I thought you were finally pregnant. But no. Two years of marriage, and still no child. This marriage is empty. That was the only thing you could’ve done to make me happy.”

“So you're saying you were never happy with me? Just because I can’t give you a child?” I asked, holding back tears.

He didn’t answer.

“I gave you everything. I became your servant just to fulfill my role as your wife. I endured your family's cruelty. And still, it wasn’t enough?”

“Of course you should serve me,” he snapped. “I’m your husband. You’re my wife. That’s your place, serve me, obey me, make my life easier. And you can’t even do that right.”

“Fine. If that’s what you think, then leave me. Do whatever makes you happy,” I said bravely.

But deep inside, I was dying. It felt like I couldn’t breathe, like something was crushing my chest with every second that passed. I didn’t say those words because I wanted him to leave, I said them because I needed him to realize that he couldn’t leave me, that he couldn’t bear to lose me. He was mad, that’s all, and I thought he would take his words back.

But then he said the words that broke my heart into pieces.

“Yes. I’m filing for divorce,” he said coldly. “When you get home, the papers will be ready.”

He turned to leave.

“Get yourself out of this damn hospital.”

And just like that, he walked out, never looking back.

I couldn’t believe he could do that to me. My hands were sweating and shaking from the pain, my entire body trembling as the weight of his words sank in. I couldn’t stop the sobs that tore out of me, each one a reminder of how quickly my heart was broken by the man I love the most. And at that moment, all I could do was cry while clutching the sheets of my bed.

Suddenly, my mother-in-law, with Ezekiel’s sister walking behind her, stepped in. I immediately wiped my tears because I didn’t want them to see me cry. I didn’t want them to see me weak again. I’d had enough of them. I did my part as a devoted wife to Ezekiel, but this is all I got. Damn, I regret choosing him over the life I was supposed to have.

“Oh, how are you feeling now?” Mrs. Hart asked, her voice thick with sarcasm.

“I should be asking you, Mrs. Hart. How do you feel now that your plan worked? Are you happy?”

She sneered. “Sarcastic, huh? But yes, I’m happy. Finally, a useless woman gone from our family!”

“Well, I’m happy too. I’ve had enough of all of you.”

“You think highly of yourself, woman. You are nothing compared to my brother’s new girlfriend and soon-to-be wife!” Diana, Ezekiel’s sister, mocked, folding her arms across her chest with a smirk.

I was shocked at what I heard from her. All I knew was Ezekiel filed for divorce because I couldn’t make him happy after all. I couldn’t bear his child, but now I hear these words? Damn. It kills me slowly, deeply. But I told myself his sister just wanted to tease me, to break me down.

“He can never replace me. He can never find a wife as devoted as I am.”

“Are you joking, Isa? My brother already found the woman of his dreams. The one who can make him happy, and that’s Celeste Scott, the CEO's daughter of Scott Textile Corporation. The one who promoted him to General Manager. The one who took him to the top while you were pulling him down!”

“Pulling him down?” I said, laughing bitterly.

“Oh, please. I was the one holding him up while you all drained him. Asking him for money? I’m his wife. I had every right. I paid for it by serving him and swallowing every insult you threw at me. And you? What did you ever do to deserve his money? Nothing. You just stand there, spewing filth, living off his name, acting superior. When in truth, without him, you’re nothing but a desperate, pathetic freeloader.”

“How dare you!” she shouted, raising her hand.

But I caught it before she could slap me.

“I will not let any of you hurt me anymore!” I said emphatically.

Mrs. Hart frowned, stepping forward as if she wanted to attack me to defend Diana, but Diana quickly held her arm, stopping her.

“Stop it, Mom. Don’t waste your time on that woman. She’s useless and disgusting!”

“You can leave now.”I said in controlled.

“Let’s go, Mom. We have more important things to do than giving time to her.”

They finally stepped out of the hospital room, and I took a deep breath to calm myself after what happened between me and Diana.

They walked out, and I exhaled shakily. The room was quiet again, but the silence screamed.

Then a notification tone sounded from my phone.

Breaking news: Mr. Ezekiel Hart, General Manager of Scott Textile Corporation, is now reportedly dating Celeste Scott, the CEO's daughter."
