Chapter One

I looked down at my shaking hands as tears streamed down my face. This couldn't happen.

“Father… I can't.” I tried to say, but my voice came out barely in a whisper. I was getting married a few days after I graduated from college.

My parents hadn't even been there for my graduation, it was just Sarah and I, and I preferred that. I had never expected this was waiting for me back at home. I would have never come back.

“My decision is final vanica,” Father said, his voice passive.

“We need to save our company, and your husband has offered to help us.” I stood in his office, my body frozen, my world was turning upside down.

Father looked at me one last time before leaving his office, saying he had other things to attend to. With the last drop of courage I could muster, I left his office and entered a cab to take me home.

I was getting married a week from now. I was going to belong to another man soon and there was nothing I could do about it.

I had heard about my future husband a lot of times over the past few years. Levi Addams, a wealthy businessman.

His looks could make any woman's heart flutter, so I heard. But that wasn't what scared me. There were rumors that had been going on since he took over his father's syndicate.

Since I was my father's only child, I was exposed to the little secrets concerning our business from an early age. Father was an associate of the Addams Family. A mighty and feared Mafia gang, they offered him protection from different business rivals in exchange for his help with different tasks. He also helped them deliver packages to high clients.

It was my father's fault. Our company was drowning in debt.

He had become something else these last few years. Maybe it was the Mafia influence. He partied, spent his money on different women and always came back drunk.

Mother couldn't do anything. She was as weak as I was, always obeying my father's every command. My chest suddenly felt tight again. Would that be my fate? I didn't want to live like my parents.

Sarah rushed to hug me as I entered our home.

“Your mom told me the news. "I'm so sorry." She said, her voice cracking from crying.

I hugged her back, burying my face deep in her shoulders as I finally let out all my anger in tears. I didn't want to get married, especially to this man rumored to be the devil. I didn't want to live my life caged up only answering to his every command.

“Dear…”

I looked up at my mum, she stood by the hallway entrance, a scarf wrapped around her frail body. I could tell she was sad too, but I didn't care at all.

Releasing myself from Sarah, I walked past her to my room. I hated my parents and I hated my life.

All week I was in my room, trying to prepare myself for this day.

“You have to look good for your husband. I hear he's stunning.” Sarah would tell me every once in a while.

Even though I didn't want this for myself, I had to do it for my family. I still cared for them and I didn't like that I did.

Leaving all the bad thoughts behind me, I studied myself in the mirror. My housemaids had spent hours preparing me, making me look more beautiful than I was.

I was wearing a long beautiful white dress with golden embroidery. My brown hair was combed back beautifully and held in place with golden hairpins in the shapes of flowers and leaves. The makeup was perfect.

The only problem was the jewelry. Since it was a Mafia wedding, my parents insisted I look extravagant. They were beautiful but heavy, now that I have worn a lot of them.

I was already feeling weak because of nervousness, or was it fear? I didn't know, but I was feeling sick. The knot that had formed in my stomach refused to go away no matter how hard I tried to calm down.

"Don't you like the dress?" Lydia asked.

Lydia and Andy, my housemaids that have been taking care of me since I was a little girl. They and Sarah, my best friend, were the only ones I could talk to. I would miss them once I left.

"No, I love it. "It's beautiful." I tried to smile but failed.

Lydia could see the fear on my face.

"Everything will be alright," she told me. Don't listen to the rumors, they are nothing but just rumors.

Maybe your husband is a nice man,"

She tried to sound positive, but I could hear the doubt in her voice.

Not that I believed the rumors, but they did affect me. I wasn't scared because people said that he was the devil himself.

They definitely weren't speaking literally. They referred to his personality: Maybe he was so ruthless, a murderer, and a manipulator , or that he was just pure evil and that's what scared me.

A knock on the door interrupted my thoughts, and shortly after, my mother came in.

“It's time.” She informed me.

“Yes, yes…it's time to go.” Andy said excitedly as she and Lydia helped me carry the end of my gown so I could walk well.

The ceremony would begin with a vow exchange between the bride and the groom and then our families would celebrate together.

I stood at the entrance of the hall, a guard informing them of my presence. Lydia and Andy gave me a reassuring smile before I left them behind to walk inside. Now I was all on my own.

Taking a deep breath, I strode into the hall carefully, and immediately all heads turned to look at me.

I walked with my head high but kept my gaze low, only looking at the floor until I reached the altar where my father was standing with my mother next to him. I nodded to them as I felt my legs tremble.

Mother smiled at me nervously, but my father just gestured for me to stand in front of the priest. He was looking very unbothered by the fact that he was marrying me off to a Mafia leader rumored to be the devil.

Ignoring my father, I smiled at my mother, then faced the priest. I could feel everyone's eyes on me, some stared at me with curiosity and others with repulsion, as if it was my fault I was getting married to whoever I was getting married to. They should blame my father, not me.

After a while, the same guard informed us of the groom's presence and everyone turned their attention away from me to the door. The room went quiet as the guests waited for the groom to enter.

I, on the other hand, looked down quickly and rubbed my hands together nervously as I felt the knots in my stomach return. I wanted to look up, but I was afraid.

What if I didn't like what I saw? Shaking my head a little to bring myself back to reality, I turned to take a look at him.
