Chapter One
Scarlett’s POV
The smile on my face freezes. My eyes dilate at the image before me.
I freeze on the spot. My heart hammers in my chest. My fingers tremble.
Liam, my mate, is pounding into Serena, my best friend, their bodies moving in sync.
“Oh, Liam! You feel so fucking good!”
Their gasps and moans fill the air, causing a lump of ash to settle deep in my belly. I grip the doorknob for support as my knees go limp.
“Liam,” my voice is barely above a whisper, and the glass gift box in my other hand drops to the floor, shattering into pieces. Liam stops moving in Serena and they whip their heads in the direction of the sound. Liam’s eyes lock with mine, widening for a second or two and I get the same reaction from Serena, who gasps.
“Scarlett?” She rolls away from Liam, covering her naked breasts with the sheets.
She looks from me to Liam, shrugging, and twisting her lips, and I watch as Liam’s face hardens.
“Liam? Serena? What…?” My words are trapped in my throat and I feel my vision clouding with unshed tears.
“I guess you should tell her since it’s right in her face,” Serena says lazily, twirling her hair and I look from her to Liam, confusion clouding my senses.
“You shouldn’t have come here,” Liam says, buttoning his pants.
“I came here to see you…and I…I find you in bed with my best friend the night before our mating ceremony? How could you do this to me, Liam?”
“Serena, how could you betray me like—” I don’t get all my words out because Liam rushes to my side like a bolt of lightning, and the next second a sharp pain explodes in my skull, dulling my senses. Then, darkness envelops me.
My head throbs as I rouse back to consciousness. My body feels weak, and my eyelids quiver under a blinding light. The air smells of Liam, and something distinct. I hold my head, wincing but a gruff voice beside me causes my eyelids to snap open. I turn to the side to find a stranger grinning at me. My eyes dilate. My pulse races and I feel blood rushing to my ears.
He’s naked with the sheets barely covering his lower body.
I jerk. “What the fuck?”
Before I can react any further, the door snaps open and Liam strides in with his Bata, Ethan flanking him.
His eyes widen as they rest on me, and there is a look of disgust in his face.
My blood runs cold when my parents follow, with Serena, and dread coils within me.
Before I can ask what is happening, my father bellows, his eyes sharp like the edges of a blade. “What’s the meaning of this, Scarlett?”
“I told you but you wouldn’t believe anything I say. Your daughter is such a fucking slut,” Serena says to my parents.
“She doesn’t deserve you, Alpha Liam,” she adds, staring down at me, her tone dripping with disdain.
“How could you be in bed with another man on your mating ceremony?” My mother yells, her voice dripping with disgust.
“What? Mom? No, I…”
“Shut up, Scarlett, you don’t even have the decency to cover up! What kind of woman are you?”
It’s then I realize that I’m naked, and mortification instantly washes over me. I immediately gather the sheets to myself with trembling fingers, covering my body.
Then, I spring to my feet and find my clothes scattered in the room. The stranger is also getting dressed, fidgeting as if he just peed in his panties.
Serena uses her toe to kick one of them at me, and I pick them up with an urgency I have no idea I had.
“You’re such a fucking whore, Scarlett! How could you do this to me? Today is our mating ceremony and you’re in the arms of another man! Naked in bed! With him! My own mate!” Liam barks, finally speaking.
Tears sting my eyes, and my vision immediately blurs.
“That’s a fucking lie, Liam! You have no right to spin this against me and make me look like the bad guy when you—”
“Shut your fucking mouth, Scarlett! How much did he pay you to have sex with him, huh?”
“Don’t you dare talk to me like that, Serena! You are the liar and cheat! You don’t get to play the victim here!” I turn to my parents, and the tears I’ve been fighting stream down my cheeks.
“Mom. Dad. You have to believe me. I don’t know this man here. I woke up, and found him lying next to me—”
“You don’t have to lie, Scar. We’ve been caught red-handed,” the stranger says, and the need to immediately hurl something at him bites at me at the sound of my name on his lips.
“Don’t you dare call me that, mister!” I scream, grabbing a pillow and throwing it at him with all the fury inside me, but I miss.
“Enough, Scarlett!” Liam bellows, interrupting me from hurling another thing at the man, and my body trembles at the sound of his voice. “I, Alpha Liam of the Blackwood pack, reject you, Scarlett Wolfe as my mate!”
A sharp searing pain rips from my chest. I put a hand over my chest, clutching it as my wolf howls in agony. I feel the bond between us snapping like a thread pulled too tight, and I gurgle as if I have blood in my mouth.
“Y-You c-cannot do this to me, Alpha Liam,” I stutter. “Please. I…I forgive you. I’ll overlook everything that happened and…”
“Drag her out, Beta! Now!” Alpha Liam orders Ethan who has been quiet since and he eagerly obeys, grabbing me roughly.
“Dad? Mom?” I call out to my parents in desperation, but neither of them can even bear to look me in the face, as I’m being pulled out of the room like a slave by Ethan.
I still have the sheets wrapping my body, and as I’m pulled to the crowd, gasps fill the air, overshadowing the sound of the soft music playing in the party as everyone’s attention turns to me.
The music stops playing and murmurs instantly follow. I can make out disgust and horror on the faces of everyone gathered.
“Isn’t that Alpha Liam’s mate? The woman he’s getting married to today?” A woman whispers from the crowd.
“No fucking way! He caught her on the bed with a man. Look,” someone else whispers.
“Silence!” Liam orders and everywhere immediately quietens like a graveyard.
“I want y’all to witness the punishment of Scarlett Wolfe.”
Shame sweeps over me, and I bury my face to the ground.
“Scarlett Wolfe, you’re at once stripped of your omega rank. Beta, drag this disgusting and filthy thing out of my sight, and throw her to the underground, where she’ll serve her punishment!” Liam declares without batting an eyelid, and more gasps fill the air.
My heart stops dead.
No, no, no. Not the underground. Not Howling Moon, the underground nightclub where the packs’ whores and sluts work as sex slaves for ruthless and powerful alphas.
“No, Alpha Liam, please. You said you loved me. You wouldn’t send me to the underground nightclub.” My voice is even more desperate but he doesn’t even look at me.
“You’re a disgrace to the pack, Scarlett! I hope Alpha Liam’s rejection kills you!” Serena spits, and more tears trickle down my hot cheeks.
“Get her out of my face!” He yells again, and Ethan grabs my arm, pulling me like garbage out of the party.
