Chapter 1 Heartbreak

"He can't be gone just like that! I'm not going to believe it! Not one fucking bit!” Julia screamed, her voice breaking with each word she spoke.

Five years ago, her first mate, Alpha Dimitri, died under unforeseen circumstances. And with each passing day, her heart broke slowly.

“No! How could my life turn out this cruel?” She hollered, grabbing the bedsheet and twisting it in her hand.

Her hands started to sweat profusely the more she did.

"Why did he have to leave me with this type of heartbreak?" Julia screamed as she started pulling out her hair.

Finally, having had enough, she stared at the ceiling, and a guttural scream fell from her lips.

"Come on, I can't... I shouldn't act like this." Julia whispered, trying to calm her rampaging emotions down.

Despite her taking deep breaths, the thoughts passed through her mind relentlessly, causing her mind to race.

Every day that I've been alive without him has been nothing but a hassle for me! Julia screamed internally, then placed her hand on her chest as it rose and fell.

A smile appeared on her face as a memory pulled her from her thoughts. Then, she looked at the empty side of her bed.

“This sadness and anger will no longer consume me! I’m a strong f*cking Luna, and my pack is going to see that!” Julia whispered resolutely.

Then, she closed her eyes and lay back down as her heart beat rapidly inside her chest.

If I don’t get a handle on things, I know I would do the unthinkable. Julia thought as she blinked back the onset of tears which started forming in her eyes.

Suddenly, a whisper in the wind broke her out of her thoughts, and stare up at the sky.

“Don't do that to yourself Julia! Being strong for the Kingdom is the most important thing you must do!” The strange voice spoke, urging Julia to rethink what she was about to do.

As their words lingered in the air, Julia sighed, and a silent recognition flowed through her eyes.

She's right. This isn't how a Luna should act. My Kingdom's success is of the most importance. Julia thought as her teardrops subsided.

However, pain surged though her body with a vengeance.

Although she tried to dispel it, her efforts to rule as a true Luna weren't strong enough.

I can't take it anymore! We should be lying next to each other. How could have this happened? The happiness we once shared is nothing but a distant memory. But I'll never forget how much we loved each other. Julia pondered with sweaty hands.

Being the Luna of the Golden Moon Pack meant that she should be strong for them, yet her heart wasn't in it.

"I feel as though my brain is telling me one thing and my body another. I'm not ready to face reality just yet." Julia spoke through unshed tears, her voice breaking with each word.

How the fuck did we go from making plans about our life together to throwing it in the garbage? Julia groaned, letting her hands roam the bedsheet in search of Dimitri's warmth.

However, he wasn't there; only a cold, hard bed.

The veil that was kept over her eyes slowly lifted, and a realization settled into her brain. Despite the new reality, she wasn't ready to accept it just yet.

This is not f*cking happening! Why would the Moon Goddess do this to me? She knows everyone in the werewolf world needs a mate, yet she took mine from me! Julia thought while clutching the bedsheet and twisting it in her hand.

“We planned for a future. One where we would be parents. And now the promise we made together is all gone!” She declared angrily, letting the words hang in the air.

When suddenly, the sound of a door opening slowly, rang in the air.

Creak...

The surrounding air started closing in on Julia, making it harder for her to breath.

I feel like someone's watching me. I wonder who it could be. Julia thought as she sat up slowly while masking her fear.

“Who’s there?” She questioned as her heart began beating rapidly inside her chest.

The sound of high heels reverberated off the hardwood floor, causing her to face the door.

Her eyes widened as they looked at the doorway, and a sense of relief filled her.

What is Alexa doing here? Is there something wrong with the pack? Or is she here only to comfort me? Julia wondered as Alexa walked closer to her.

Since they have been friends since elementary school, they made a promise never to let their friendship dwindle.

So, whenever a problem arises Alexa is always ready and willing to console her and make things right.

As she inched closer, Alexa squinted her eyes while scanning her best friend's emotions.

I hate how my friend is feeling right now. Moon Goddess, please tell me there is a way I can help her feel better, she pleaded silently in hopes of figuring something out.

Then, an idea struck her; something that would either help Julia or harm her.

What if I take her outside for a while? The fresh air might help her combat her rampaging emotions. Alexa wondered as she quietly sat on the bed and grabbed Julia by the hand.

What? Why is she holding my hand? Julia thought while she gingerly removed her hand from Alexa’s.

A sigh escaped her lips as she peered closely at Alexa. I don’t understand her sudden closeness at all. Even though she’s my best friend, Alexa should know that when my door is closed and locked, it doesn’t mean she should enter my room like that.

As the last thought crossed her mind, she opened her mouth to speak. But Alexa placed her hand over her mouth, stopping her mid-thought.

I hope she doesn’t judge me for what I’m about to tell her. Yet, deep down in my heart, this is the right thing I must do for her. Alexa wondered as she took a deep breath.

“Listen first before you tell me.” She said, her voice filling with concern.

Julia nodded her head slightly and pursed her lips into a thin line. Her eyes started filling with tears, unable to get away from the grief that stuck deep into her heart.

I guess there’s no use in complaining. Who knows, maybe she has something important to tell me. But I won’t know unless I stay quiet and listen to her. Julia pondered while she sighed.

Then she crossed her arms over her chest, while annoyance and anger festered deeper into her heart.

She is taking a long time to tell me what she needs to say. When will she talk? Julia thought as she began tapping her feet on the ground.

“Tell me what you want to say. However, I promise I might not like it.” She replied nonchalantly.

Alexa’s mind raced as she mulled over what she was about to tell her. But the thought of Julia’s happiness was stronger than her fear of regret. And she was ready to do whatever it took for her not to be upset or angry anymore.

She grabbed Julia's hand and then started rubbing small circular motions over it.

“Jules, I was thinking of taking you for a walk in the forest,” she whispered under her breath, concern with every word.

Julia’s eyes widened as her words made their way toward her ears. A sense of recognition and understanding passed through her eyes.

Hm… A walk through the forest does sound nice. I mean, I’ve been cooped up in this room since the day he died. So, it couldn’t hurt to get out for a little while.

Alexa knew it was important not to push her too much, but to be a person who would support her.

“So, what do you say? Will you agree?” She asked, her voice low with conviction.

Julia sighed once again, letting her emotions take hold of her.

What to do. Moon Goddess, please guide me in the right way to go about this. On the one hand, I would love to return to my true nature. On the other hand, I can’t do it without my second half, my mate.

Julia looked at the ceiling and then towards Alexa. Taking a deep breath, she steadied herself for what she would say.

“Alright. I agree to go outside with you,” Julia replied, even though deep down she wasn’t truly ready yet.
