Chapter 1

TODAY IS MY LAST DAY AS CHARLIE FLEMING.

"Lots 1 to 20, make your way to the center hall. The auction is about to begin."

The announcement echoed through the corridors and we lined up in the hallway. I gently tapped my chest as the head caretaker walked ahead of us.

After five years of preparation and endless training, it was finally happening. We were about to be auctioned like prized cattle. Sold and chosen to any pack in Elysium.

I was Lot 18. Just another trained omega. Just another vessel for the pack to continue their lineage.

We gently walked in a line. No one said a word.

Then after a while, just as we turned the corner into the center hall, someone tapped my shoulders.

"Charlie?"

I turned my head slightly and was startled. No one ever used real names here.

A girl with auburn curls and hazel eyes smiled at me. "I'm Ruby," she uttered and stepped beside me. "Lot 20."

I was surprised. "Lot 20? So... you're the most valuable one?"

She gave me a sweet smile. "So they say."

Every year, surrogates were ranked according to their physiques, height, weight, and overall qualities. I was already lucky to be lot 18.

I just blinked at her while unsure how to respond. She just looked so calm and graceful.

When we reached the center hall, we were led to a line of white chairs arranged at a perfect angle beneath the towering glass dome.

Ruby and I sat side by side.

"You're really beautiful, you know," she uttered suddenly but her voice was slightly above a whisper.

I halted. "What?"

"I mean it," she responded and faintly chuckled. "Your eyes, they are so warm. And your jawline, your skin, it's kind of unfair, honestly."

I didn't know how to react. How would I even supposed to know how I look?

"Well, I haven't seen myself in five years," I admitted. "They don't allow mirrors in the holding facility, remember?"

Ruby nodded. "Well, you're right."

"Guess it was easier not to get attached to ourselves."

Ruby shook her head. "That's cruel."

"You're really beautiful too," I said. "You'll probably be the first to be auctioned because you have the highest points."

But before Ruby could respond, the light above us dimmed slowly until someone entered the stage.

"Welcome to the 12th Annual Elysium Surrogacy Auction."

The crowd beyond the transparent partition came around. Alphas and other representatives from the state's major packs sat in cushioned booths while each and everyone had a bidding device glowing in front of them.

A man stepped up to the auction stage. He was wearing a black uniform with a silver emblem over his heart, which from what I had known, was the symbol of the Midnight Claw Pack.

One of the strongest packs in Elysium.

This is it, Charlie.

I heaved a deep sigh.

"Our surrogates have undergone five years of rigorous training," he began while his eyes were scanning the bidders. "They are of selected lineage of Omegas who were physically conditioned, emotionally primed, and genetically compatible. As per tradition, they will be referred to only by their lot numbers until successful delivery of their contract child."

I inhaled deeply while preparing myself.

Ruby leaned close and smiled at me. "Good luck."

I also smiled faintly and nodded. "Good luck to both of us."

"And now," the announcer continued. "We begin with Lot 18."

I immediately glimpsed toward him. What?

But I wasn't first. Ruby was supposed to be first. Lot 20 was always the showpiece. I looked at her in panic, but just blinked at me and shrugged.

Before I could even react, a guard gently touched my arm and guided me up.

"This can't be right," I whispered.

The announcer then gestured to the crowd. "Now, bidding starts at 100 silvers."

Almost immediately, a lot of offers came in.

"300 silvers!"

"700!"

"2,000 golds!"

The numbers climbed instantly. My legs were already trembling but I kept my composure. Just like the facility taught us.

"5,000 golds!"

"20,000!"

"80,000 platinums!"

Silence fell over the room.

"100,000 platinums!"

I gripped the armrest of the stage podium while unable to believe what I was hearing.

"250,000 platinums." A voice came through the speaker and everyone was shocked.

Gasps exploded across the hall.

Even the announcer fluttered. As far as we studied, for a decade, no surrogate had gone above 100,000 platinums.

An heir was very crucial to every pack so they would spend a lot of Elysium money to bid on the surrogate with the highest points.

But it made no sense to me. I wasn't the surrogate with the highest points this year.

He looked down at his console for a few seconds. "Lot 18 has been claimed for 250,000 platinums by the Alpha of the Blood Moon Pack."

I froze. Blood Moon Pack.

While inside the facility, I heard stories about how their Alpha was feared even by his own kind. He was Brilliant yet cruel. Beautiful they said, but dangerous.

Ruby gripped my hand tightly. "I don't know if you're lucky or unlucky," she whispered. "They say he's bloody handsome. But also, just bloody."

I just gave her an unsteady smile. "Don't worry about me. The Council Order protects surrogates. There are laws, so they cannot hurt any of us."

We both knew how fragile those laws could be, but I needed to believe it. I had no choice.

After a few moments, the guards approached me again. But this time, they brought a black blindfold and tied it around my head.

It was tradition. We weren't allowed to see the path from the facility until we got outside. It was meant to preserve anonymity and control.

I was led down a hallway for a few minutes until we stopped and my blindfold came off.

I saw myself sitting inside a golden carriage, overlaid with gold in vines and ancient sigils of the old packs.

As I turned and saw the great walls that encircled Serenia, I heaved a deep sigh. For the first time in my life, I was leaving this city.

And for the first time, I would belong to a pack.

I gently pressed my palm to the velvet seat beside me. "After all this... maybe I'll finally be free."

The carriage door opened immediately which made me halt. A tall figure stepped in and his face was concealed by a black mask. He didn't speak to me and didn't even look at me.

He just sat across from me. "Beta, let's return.

My Luna is waiting."

So, this is the Alpha of the Black Moon Pack. He doesn't seem so dangerous and cruel. Or so I thought.

I kept my head bowed. "Thank you, Alpha."

He didn't respond and the carriage began to move. I slowly turned my head for one last glance at the facility behind us.

"I am finally part of the Blood Moon Pack. I have a home now..." I whispered.
