Chapter 1

Mia

"Hurry!" Her voice screeches on the phone as it sounds like a panic. I tried sauntering through the crowd gathered in the hallway.

"I'm close by" I responded between my teeth while heading to the bouncers at the main gate to show my invitation card.

The aura here spoke of wealth and I don't even belong to such a caste. Each path I took had eyes settled on me, the people here recognized their own.

Their haunting eyes were just a hint that they knew I was from the trash.

I was here for my bestie, Stephanie, the daughter of the conglomerate who is hosting a party in her glass castle.

She'd be introducing her fiance to the people and I'd be singing a love song for them.

With the money I'd make from the music, it would be enough to save my daughter's health, my father's debt and then my long anticipated wedding with Durex.

While hurrying to reach her, I accidentally bumped into someone and my phone almost slipped. Fortunately, I got it with my other hand.

I tilted my head to take a glimpse at who it was and the sight of him made me freeze.

It was him, her stepbrother, the infamous miles. He had moved from being attractive to cute and gorgeous.

The line of his jaw, strong and covered with warm tawny skin and when he folds his arm across his torso, the muscles in his chest and arms ripple which makes me swallow.

And his eyes, they were dark brown, he was startling, his features itself were astonishingly perfect.

He didn't say a word to me, even though we know each other, we don't get along. His cold gaze made me melt.

He moved away from me to attend to his peers, probably because I didn't exist. We've never spoken to each other.

"Mia!" Stephanie's voice called as she pulled me by the hand but my eyes didn't leave him until the crowd swallowed him up.

I shifted my gaze to her, jerking back to reality.

"Stephanie" my lips spewed in a teary tone as I lowered my eyes at her chest.

How long has it been? 5 years now after she left for her heart surgery and her gift to me was to help me pay my debts.

I refused but after much pressure, she agreed to sing a song for her, one which was composed by Durex and I.

"Stop making me emotional" she whispered with tears in her eyes too.

I fluttered my eyes fighting back my tears. The aura here was tense yet enlivening.

"I'm sorry" I responded with a voice which was barely above a whisper.

We embraced and screamed like we do in high school before she led me towards a curved stairway.

Her mouth didn't cease from talking as anyone we walked passed, I got to know everything about them.

It's just her, a free spirit, loved and cherished by all. Stephanie was just that one person who doesn't segregate.

At the foot of the stairway, I could see a man with a glass of champagne, only his back view though.

He was having a discussion with two men who were quite flustered by his speech. I wasn't comfortable though as I felt intimidated by everyone.

"That's him," her voice whispered as she bumped my shoulder. When I rolled my eyes to her, she was blushing.

I felt shy on her behalf as she drew closer to him. Her fingers tapped him gently on the back, to look at us and when he did, I lost my breath.

His forehead etched with surprise, as we were both startled to see each other.

He gulped hard and it took me a while to regain consciousness.

"Meet my fiance, terry" Stephanie introduced and kissed him mildly on the lips.

"Durex?" I muttered and a strand of tear dropped from my eyes, but then staring at Stephanie's chest, I realized I couldn't even say a word.

A little shock would land her to her grave. She was smiling broadly while locking fingers with him.

He straightened his face while stretching his hand for a handshake.

It was as though we were strangers and I had mixed emotions exploding inside me.

"And what's your name, beautiful?" He questioned faking a smile and I drew in a long breath.

"I-i'm...Mia" I replied, fighting my tears and shivering where I stood. He told me he has been working on a trip for years but we always communicate.

Even last night, we had a video call with our daughter in the hospital and here he was, suddenly getting married to my friend in two days.

I didn't want to shake him or I'd burst into tears and so he dropped his hand and just tossed it to me with his glass.

It's so hard to breath watching him with another, how he looked at her like she's the only thing that matters.

"Stephanie has said a lot about you but not the name and finally I get to see you" he pressed on to lighten the mood while placing his arm around her waist.

He pushed her in for an ardent kiss in my presence.

"Y-yes...likewise" I managed to squeeze out as my throat burned.

I closed my eyes briefly, I wasn't conscious again. Every sound in this hall faded.

"Uhmm...if you don't mind, I'd like to excuse myself, I'd be back before my time to perform" I stated, barely recognizing my voice.

"Don't be late please Mia" she pleaded and I nodded, took a long glance at Durex who didn't even seem nervous but was busy chatting with her before leaving for the restroom.

At the restroom which of course belongs to Stephanie, I was just staring at my image in the mirror and sobbing uncontrollably.

How could he when we have a daughter that needs us the most?

After everything I did to hold us together, he went on to betray me.

I wish to scream but it would only draw attention and when I felt I'd be fine, I turned around to leave only to find Durex by the door of the restroom.

"What the fuck Mia!" He barked attempting to grab my hand and I landed him a slap, I never meant that but he deserves it.

"How dare you!" I snarl as tears stream down.

I was charged and didn't even want to give him a chance to speak.

However, he grappled my neck and smashed my head on the mirror.

For a moment time stopped, my hands struggled to push him away as I couldn't breath.

A loud bing sounded in my ears. I felt dizzy and his face had become blurry.

"How dare you show your face here huh? To ruin my plans?"

My mind was void of thoughts as I stared at him in the eyes while blood drool from my head.

Silence.

"Everything I do is for us, so you had better stay put and not let anyone know about us" he retorts, his voice low and menace.

Durex shoved me aside.

I fell to the ground, while coughing and shivering. I tried to crawl up but he grabbed me by the collar and pinned me to the wall.

My body was weak and I felt like throwing up but then he didn't mind making me bleed as long as that would keep me shut.

However, I don't want to hurt my friend and so it's best we end it today.

"Give me an answer Mia!"

"Let's break up" I cried beneath my breath and he suddenly snickered at me while leaning his face to me.

"No Mia, we are getting married, Stephanie is a jackpot and I don't want her but you... it's simple, just don't screw it and quietly leave..."

The more he speak, the more his words becomes blur out and his eyes darken at me.

I couldn't believe he was saying this, wanting to use us both for his advantage but not my friend, i'd save her.

We exchanged breath and he pressed his body against mine attempting to kiss me, I shoved my face away.

"Let me go, I don't want this anymore" i petitioned with anger, trying to break out of his grip but he was firm.

"We are destined together Mia, it's a few days until I get hold of her inheritance..."

The retreating sound of footsteps drew Durex attention to the door. Someone was eavesdropping and my heart thuds loudly.

I gasped softly as he released me quickly and dashed out of the restroom to trail after whosoever it was outside.

My hands massage my neck craving for fresh air while I dragging my weak body after him.

Coming out of the restroom, I met durex chasing after Stephanie who was suddenly screaming for help as she ran out of her room.

Unfortunately, it was a secluded area and guest were prohibited from entering here except family members.

He'd hurt her, I had the feeling. I lost track of them not until I heard Stephanie's voice from a corner, which was a distance away from where I stood.
