Layla sighed heavily, switching her laptop off. She had just remembered she had to visit the hospital today to see her father.

The doctor had called the previous day to inform her that they had finally found a donor for his kidney transplant.

Her father, Markos, her joy and pride, was one of the reasons she was still holding on. She had to live for him. He was the only reason she was still in this house. She would have moved out the moment she finished college, but her father had pleaded with her to stay.

Layla quickly changed into comfortable clothes and dashed out of her room.

“Layla, where are you off to?” her stepsister, Scarlet, asked as she alighted from the stairs.

“The hospital. The doctor called last night. He said they found a donor,” Layla responded, joy flickering in her heart as they both squealed excitedly.

“And what’s the cause of all that noise?” Rosalie, her stepmother, asked in annoyance, stepping out from the kitchen, a dish towel still in her hand.

“Mother,” Layla muttered softly, tucking her hair behind her ear, already feeling intimidated by Rosalie’s presence. Rosalie was far from nice, and her presence only spelled one thing, trouble.

“Mom, you won’t believe this. The doctor found a donor for Dad! Dad can be saved, Mom!” Scarlet announced happily as she went to hug her mother.

“And how did you find out?” Rosalie questioned, throwing sharp glares at Layla, who had begun picking nervously at her fingers.

“Layla told me so. The doctor called her,” Scarlet replied with innocent enthusiasm.

“So the doctor called you, without reaching out to his wife first, and you, bastard, didn’t even tell us before rushing to the hospital? Like a good daughter, oh wow,” Rosalie snapped with heavy sarcasm.

“I… I didn’t mean to, I was just,” Layla began, but was cut off.

“Oh, shut your trap. ‘I didn’t mean to, I was just’,you were just stupid,” Rosalie mimicked cruelly, her voice laced with venom.

“I’m sorry,” Layla whispered, trying to apologize in hopes that Rosalie would stop with her taunting. Today was supposed to be a good day, and she didn’t want it ruined.

“You’re always sorry. That’s why you’ll never be successful in your miserable life. I’ve told your father countless times to destroy that laptop of yours. You’re always writing, but nothing to show for it,” Rosalie spat, her glare intensifying.

“You’re so useless, Layla. Look at you,you just finished college and have nothing to show for it. Not even a job. All you do is sit your ass down, lazing around and getting old in that room of yours.”

“Mother…” Layla called out in tears. Every day Rosalie had something new to throw at her. But how was she getting old? She was just twenty-one. Scarlet was twenty-two, and neither of them was working, so why was Rosalie always picking on her?

“I’m not your mother! How many times do I have to say that? I’m not your mother. Your useless mother is lying in a grave somewhere,” Rosalie snapped, her words cutting through Layla like shards of glass.

“Stop! Please stop all this! I told you never to bring my mom into this,” Layla yelled, tears rolling down her cheeks.

She had lost her mother when she was just a baby and had lived with her Aunt Stella for six years before Markos came into her life, claiming to be her father and wanting to make up for lost time.

But Rosalie had never been kind to her from the day she stepped into this house. She always claimed Layla was the daughter of a mistress,a mistake. And if that were true, then Layla herself was a mistake that never should have been born.

“You’re so rude, you know. Now get inside before you lose your teeth,” Rosalie threatened.

Layla shook her head, unwilling to retreat. She needed to see her father,at least he was someone she could talk to.

“Mother…” Layla called softly again.

“I’m not your mother!” Rosalie screamed, charging forward and grabbing a fistful of Layla’s hair.

“Mom, please, let me go!” Layla sobbed, trying to pull free as Rosalie dragged her upstairs by the hair. Scarlet simply stood there, watching the drama unfold.

“I said I’m not your mother!!” Rosalie shrieked again, shoving Layla into her room and slamming the door shut behind her.

“That was too harsh, Mom,” Scarlet said with a yawn, her voice thick with sarcasm as Rosalie descended the stairs.

“But you enjoyed it.”

“Of course. Certainly,” Scarlet giggled, twirling her hair around her finger.

“I’ll pack some food and take it to your father. You can invite Mike to accompany you.”

“Really?” Scarlet squealed in joy as her mother nodded.

“Thanks, Mom. You’re the best! I’ll freshen up and fix my makeup. Besides, Mike’s coming too!” she blushed, hurrying back upstairs.

Layla sat quietly in her room, watching the clear night sky as tears slid silently down her face.

She had been just a baby when her mother died. For six years, she’d lived with Aunt Stella before her father, Markos, appeared in her life, saying he wanted to fulfil his duties and honor her mother’s memory.

Since then, Rosalie had made her life a battlefield, branding her a mistake, the child of an affair that should never have happened.

The only relief she had came from her father, Markos, who had always stood by her side, defending and loving her. But that love only seemed to fuel Rosalie’s resentment further.

Scarlet had been another source of comfort,Layla’s sister and occasional ally in the house, but her support was often passive and unpredictable, like today.

Then there was Mike, her boyfriend, and Aurora Lawrence, her best friend. They were her constants in a world that often felt like quicksand. But Aurora had moved to New York City a year ago with her brother, leaving a void that even Mike couldn’t quite fill.

Her father’s diagnosis had devastated her. Kidney failure. No matches within the family. It had taken months, but finally, a donor had been found. Her heart ached not just for him,but for the helplessness she’d felt every step of the way.

“I’ll have to be strong and fight this,” Layla whispered to herself, wiping away her tears.

She stood from the window and walked over to her bed, lying down slowly.

Tomorrow, she promised herself she would see her father. If Rosalie didn’t let her out, then she’d do whatever it took to leave that house.

No matter what.
