Chapter 1 Out from Prison

Alaina’s POV

New York, Prison

“Don’t look back after you get out. Live a good life.”

The prison gates closed behind me with a sound that echoed in my bones. The cold wind bit at my skin as I bowed slightly to the guard, clutching my thin coat tighter around me.

It had been five years. Five years behind bars.

I was only twenty-one when they threw me in. Now, I was twenty-six and I felt twice that age.

A sleek black car pulled up on the roadside. Its scent hit me before the door opened. The scent was strong and dominant. Alpha blood.

“Get in the car.”

The voice was familiar. Too familiar.

It was Aaron. My brother—or the man I once called that.

He stepped out. He looked tall and imposing as always. It had been years since I saw him, but to me, he looked the same. The dark aura of his wolf flared around him. My wolf whimpered in the back of my mind, tucking her tail low. She used to adore him. We both did.

“Brother…” My voice cracked. My voice was hoarse from years of silence.

“I’m not your brother.” He snapped. His eyes glowed black, like his wolf was about to take over. “Don’t disgust me.”

I lowered my eyes, staring at the ground. I could feel his anger vibrating through the air like static. He was Alpha-born, and even his restraint carried power.

“You stole twenty-one years of my sister’s life,” he growled. “She suffered because of you. How dare you call me brother?”

I swallowed hard. The instinct to bow my head and keep it that way was overwhelming. Submission was all I’d learned to survive in prison.

“I’m sorry…” I whispered.

My voice came out soft, fragile. The wind carried it away before it even reached him.

I used to be the pampered daughter of the Moonfall Pack. I used to be loved, spoiled, and admired. My wolf used to dance under the moon without fear. Then one day, the real daughter, Danielle, returned. The secret came out. I wasn’t one of them. I was the nanny’s daughter—a fraud.

My whole world burned that day.

Aaron looked at me with disgust. His wolf scent was thick with anger.

“Sorry? You think an apology and five years in prison fix everything?” He checked his watch. “Get in the car.”

He didn’t even open the door for me. He obviously didn’t want to touch me.

Once, he’d carried me on his shoulders during pack runs, laughing. Now, he looked at me like I was filth.

I looked at him. “I’m… dirty.”

“Get in.” His tone was hard with Alpha command.

My wolf whimpered again, ears flat.

I hesitated, staring at the black car like it was a coffin. “Why are you here?”

His jaw clenched. “Danielle’s in trouble. She had a car accident. She needs a blood transplant.”

My stomach twisted. What?

He stepped closer. “You owe her that much.”

“No…” I whispered, stepping back. My wolf stirred with panic.

“Run,” she whispered.

I turned and bolted.

“Alaina!” he growled.

The roar behind me shook the air. But before I could shift, a hand grabbed my wrist and yanked me backward.

I hit the pavement hard. My forehead slammed against the curb. Blood poured down my face. The scent of it filled my nose.

Then came another scent. One that made my stomach turn.

Justin.

My former fiancé. The man who had once sworn to protect me… and then betrayed me. His wolf radiated dominance.

“You owe Danielle this,” he said coldly. “Don’t think five years in prison wiped your debt.”

I trembled. My wolf curled deep inside. She felt too broken to fight back.

Aaron’s voice came from behind him. “Get her in the car. Danielle’s waiting.”

“What if she refuses?” the driver muttered.

Justin smirked cruelly. “Refuse? Her life was never hers to begin with.” He grabbed my chin roughly, forcing my eyes to meet his. His golden irises sparkled—the mark of a powerful wolf. “Your mother is still rotting in prison. If you want her to live, you’ll do as we say. Give your blood. Be useful for once.”

My hands shook. My wolf whimpered weakly in my chest.

Five years in prison hadn’t been enough to kill me, but this might. The moment I stepped out of one hell, I had fallen into another.

But this time… I wouldn’t stay down. Somewhere deep inside, under the fear, my wolf stirred.

If I wanted to survive these demons, I had to rise above them.

And in all of New York, there was only one man strong enough to challenge them all—Kane.

He was Justin’s older brother. Alpha of the Silvermoon Pack.

And the only one who might save me.
