Chapter 20: Prick Me with Needles

Qin Haodong’s smile held no warmth. "Do you think we are in the former dynasty, and foreigners are superior to Chinese people? In my eyes, there is only the bet — no joke. Whether Chinese or not, if they lose, they should keep the wager."

“No way,” Nalan Wufeng cried. “Dr. James is an expert of the World Medical Association. How could he formally acknowledge you as his teacher?"

"Expert? In my opinion, his medical skills are worthless!"

Nalan Wufeng opened his mouth to reply, but James suddenly knelt down in front of Qin Haodong.

"Teacher, you're right. Compared to the magic of traditional Chinese medicine, my medical skills are nothing. I want to have you as my teacher and learn the magic of traditional Chinese medicine!"

Then, he put his palms together and began to kowtow.

Qin Haodong was confused by James's sudden change. Shouldn't this bearded foreigner deny his bet to save his face? Even if he kept to the agreement, he shouldn’t be happy about it! Instead, he looked like he’d just been given a gift!

Although he was arrogant, Dr. James did have a real talent for medicine, and he was obsessed with accruing medical knowledge. Based on this demonstration, it was clear he had a lot to learn from Qin Haodong.

"Master, please accept me. I want to learn magical traditional Chinese medicine!" James said in earnest.

Qin Haodong was embarrassed; it shouldn’t go like this. He’d arranged the bet to save the face of the declining traditional Chinese medicine; he’d never expected to teach this foreigner medical skills!

With James genuinely asking him to be his teacher, Qin Haodong wasn’t sure what to do.

When Qin Haodong didn't reply, James said, "Teacher, you can rest assured that I can bear hardships. Come on. Prick me with needles — I'm sure I can bear it!"

Qin Haodong felt a herd of alpacas stampede through his heart. This foreigner's words were so weird… he was implying the use of burning candle wax and other tools.

Others in the room stunned, as well, especially Nalan Wufeng, who wanted to help James find a way to deny the bet. He certainly hadn't expect the doctor to kneel down and acknowledge Qin Haodong as his teacher.

"Stand up!" Qin Haodong thought for a moment and said, "I'll take you a registered student, but if you want to learn Chinese medicine, you must first learn Chinese. When you learn the Chinese language well, then come to me to learn medical skills!"

Qin Haodong was proud of this solution. A respected member of the World Medical Association had acknowledged a Chinese doctor as his teacher, which would inevitably cause a great sensation in the medical community and promote the cause of traditional Chinese medicine. And, because it would take time for him to improve his Chinese, Qin Haodong would not need to teach him immediately.

James stood up from the ground, but retained his eagerness. "Teacher, my wife is Chinese. We speak Chinese at home every day. My Chinese is very good. I can learn now."

"Well..." No wonder the bearded foreigner spoke Chinese; he had married a Chinese woman.

"Do you know about Yin-Yang? What are the Five Elements?”

"What kind of sheep is Yin-Yang? Is it a special species of China?" James asked with a dull face. Obviously, he could only use daily Chinese language and knew nothing about Chinese culture.

"Go back and learn more Chinese from your wife. When you understand Yin-Yang and the Five Elements, you can learn traditional Chinese medical science. Don't forget your promise," said Qin Haodong seriously, "Go back and apologize quickly to traditional Chinese medical science through global media."

"Teacher, when I learn Chinese well and find out what Ying-Yang is, I will come to you to learn traditional Chinese medical science." James's original arrogance had disappeared, and he spoke respectfully. "Teacher, you can rest assured that I will fulfill my promise as soon as I return home. We must let more people realize what traditional Chinese medicine is and let them know the magic of it."

Then, he turned to Nalan Wufeng and said, "Mr. Nalan, send me home quickly. I'm going to find those who slander traditional Chinese medical science to square accounts. It's damn they should call such magic medicine a cheat!"

Nalan Wufeng was depressed, but knew he couldn’t change things. He took out a car key with a Lamborghini logo and said to Nalan Jie, "Grandpa, I sent Dr. James home. It's my sister's birthday in a few days, and I bought a car for her as a gift. It’s yours, now.”

Nalan Wushuang now realized that the Lamborghini was a birthday gift for her cousin Nalan Wuxia, the daughter of their uncle Nalan Hongfei. He must want to curry favor with his uncle by giving such a valuable gift.

Then Nalan Wufeng put the car key on the tea table next to him, then left with James and his assistants.

After they left, Nalan Jie asked the nurses and security guards to leave before turning to Qin Haodong. "Young magic doctor, you saved my life, and from now on you will be considered a great benefactor of the Nalan family!"

"It’s nothing!" Qin Haodong nodded slightly and said, "The blocked meridians in your lungs have been dredged, but don't channel your Qi Art anymore. If you practice further, it will continue to hurt this part of meridians!"

Nalan Jie's face changed. He had practiced his warrior Qi skill for many years with some success and was loathe to give up.

Qin Haodong looked at Nalan Wushuang and said, "There is something wrong with your family's inner Qi skill. You should not practice it anymore, or you will never be a mother."

Nalan Wushuang's look changed. She was infatuated with martial arts since childhood, and had pestered her Grandpa to teach her how to practice this skill. But, as a woman, she also didn't want to lose the right to be a mother.

Nalan Jie said, "Young magic doctor, I know you are very capable — are there any ways to avoid this? If you can solve this problem, the Nalan family shall never forget your great kindness!"

Although Nalan Wushuang didn't speak, she looked eagerly at Qin Haodong.

"Well... " Qin Haodong hesitated for a moment. He felt that Nalan Jie and his granddaughter were really good people. He said, "Let me have a look at your you active Qi."

Nalan Jie sat cross-legged and began to practice the Nalan family's cultivation skill with a happy expression.

About half an hour later, Nalan Jie had done a circle with his Genuine Qi. Qin Haodong could see that the Nalan family Qi had too many weak points.

"Stop!" he said to Nalan Jie. "Your family's Qi is defective!"

Nalan Jie said, "There are indeed defects, which our ancestors have mentioned, but it is very rare to have a set of inner cultivation skill, so we didn’t think too hard about it. Because of this, when my children and grandchildren showed no interest in the martial arts, I did not force them. Only Wushuang and Wuxia, the two girls, liked to play with spears and sticks and asked me to teach them. So I taught the Qi Art to them.

Qin Haodong said, "Well, I just saw a total of 18 defects in your family's skill. I'll help you revise them, and then when you practice them, there will be no problem!"

"What? You want to modify the cultivation skill of our family? Who are you? Are you a master of martial arts?" Nalan Wushuang said, unconvinced.

Although she knew that Qin Haodong's medical skill was amazing, it was not a medical practice to modify Qi. Only masters of the martial arts could hope to modify Qi, and even then, only a few in a generation could manage it.

Moreover, the inner cultivation skill was very important. A little carelessness would lead to irreparable damage to the person practicing it.

Qin Haodong smiled. He was one of the five emperors in the Divine World; his knowledge was far beyond ordinary people's imagination. It was as simple as drinking water to revise such a low-level version of Qi.

However, this kind of thing depended on fate. If the Nalan family trusted him, he would teach them how to fix the defects. If they didn’t believe him, they would still be all right.

Because of this, he did not speak, but looked at Nalan Jie silently.

After hesitating for a moment, Nalan Jie said, "Please help us!"

Despite the hesitation, Qin Haodong was both surprised and pleased at how quickly Nalan Jie had decided to trust him. Perhaps he should not be so surprised, though – a general would have to be decisive and make tough decisions quickly.

“Grandpa,” Nalan Wushuang said anxiously, "How do we do this? What if he makes a mess of it?"

Nalan Jie smiled freely. "There's nothing to be afraid of. I was given this life by this little magic doctor, so I can’t really lose anything if this doesn’t work. Besides, I believe that he can certainly create miracles."

Then, he turned to Qin Haodong and said, "Little magic doctor, would you please help this old man to get through this? The whole Nalan family will have a great reward for you!"

Qin Haodong was less solemn than them two. He said lightly, "Practice your Qi again, and change the route of Qi according to my instructions."

Nalan Jie sat cross-legged again.

A moment later, Qin Haodong said, "Run your Genuine Qi from the Jinmen acupoint to the gall bladder meridian and make a detour on seven cunyangjiao acupoint..."

Running Genuine QI was quite different from that of the Nalan family. However, since he chose to believe in Qin Haodong, Nalanjie did not hesitate to change the route of Genuine Qi and quickly realized that Qin Haodong was right. After changing the route, the old sense of cold and gloom did not rise from his dantian. On the contrary — he felt very comfortable.

Nalan Jie’s confidence in Qin Haodong increased, and he changed his route for the remaining defects precisely according to the young doctor’s instructions.

After running a large circle of vital energy, he ran twice in accordance with the new line again. He felt not only the Qi of cold and gloom disappear, but the Genuine Qi also became more and more thick and pure.

Suddenly, there was a click inside him.

He had broken through!
