Standing at the edge of the plaza, Lin Wan still couldn’t make up her mind. She knew time didn’t wait but she couldn’t put her mind at ease to let Li Mu take the risks alone.
Her husband’s advantage was clear, but no one knew what would lay in front of him. Uncertainty was her utmost concern.
Seeing her hesitation, the two sisters joined to persuade their big sister, too. Compared to Mrs. Hong, both sisters had a kind of blind worship for Li Mu and were more willing to believe in his capability to crack the realms of the Seven Emotions.
Several of them tried in turns to persuade Lin Wan, and finally got her cracked.
Lin Kun said to her, “Miss Lin, if you couldn’t put your mind at ease, I’d like to go with brother. I will not let anything happen to him even if I have to die and be smashed into pieces.”
He made these words sincerely as he had accepted Li Mu from the bottom of his heart and would like to do anything for him.
But Li Mu declined his favor without mercy, “Stop there. And please don’t go with me at all! That is another world where we don’t know who we will be and I have to look around for you if you get lost. Don’t get things complicated and let me do this alone!”
“Li Mu is right!” Mrs. Hong agreed. “If we go with him into the realm, we will not be able to help him. Instead, we will distract his attention and make a mess. It is better to let him go alone!”
It changed Lin Wan’s mind at last. She murmured, “Well then, you must be careful. Our child and I would never leave if you don’t come back!”
Li Mu didn’t say anything but delivered a message through eyesight to Mrs. Hong, who received it and nodded slightly.
Li Mu had his battle meal before departure, which was nothing more than a piece of chocolate and a mouthful of water.
He took the shovel from Shen Zixing, took a deep breath, and strode into the plaza.
...
“Stupid fool. How dare you think of our lady? Get out!”
Li Mu was pushed out of the gate without knowing what happened. Before he could set his foot firm, he was kicked on the ass and couldn’t help staggering forward for a few steps and almost fell down.
And then, a bag hit him on the head and a contemptuous laugh followed.
Li Mu turned back and stared at those people curiously.
A man who looked like a housekeeper pointed at Li Mu’s nose and cursed, “A junk fool who knows nothing about the world. Who do you think you are and how dare you to think of our lady? Get out and get lost now!”
Then as he waved his hand, several servants rushed up and rose their sticks to smash at Li Mu.
Li Mu didn’t know what had happened. However, a clever man never suffered as long as he had an alternative. Now that the situation didn’t seem good, Li Mu hurried and ran away.
The servants were stunned. “He ran. He ran off! The boy who prefers to die for our lady. Why did he run off as fast as a rabbit?”
The housekeeper was stunned as well. He didn’t get his mind back until he lost sight of Li Mu’s back, and then he yelled to the servants, “What are you doing fools? Run and catch him now!”
A servant murmured, “Mr. Qian, it is better he ran away, isn’t it? Why should we run after him?”
The housekeeper cursed him, “Fool, how can I make you smarter? Our young lady will not give up on him if the boy is alive. The master wants him to die!”
Those servants understood all of a sudden. They carried their sticks and ran after Li Mu’s track until the outside of the city. But couldn’t find him.
The servants were all exhausted. They stopped and leaned at their sticks, breathing like an ox. A servant complained, “This bastard looks so weak as if the wind could blow him off. How came he ran so fast?”
“Who knows? We’ve lost him. What shall we do then?”
“What shall we do? We should be honest. He ran but we’ve tried our best!”
“Our master didn’t make it clear that he wanted him dead. If we knew earlier that it was a dead body our lord wanted, we would not kick him out of the door. Our lord wants him dead but didn’t say it until he ran off. We should not be blamed for this.”
“Stop what you said. How could our lord say that when the young lady was threatening her own life? Mr. Qian is the one who should be blamed. He should give us a hint when our lord couldn’t make it clear. But instead, he just cursed us after the man ran off!”
The group complained one after another. The sky was getting dark and they had to go back to the city with their sticks at hand.
Li Mu poked his head out of the thick forest outside the city. He touched the big braid on his head and murmured, “So this is the age of emperors. That’s something interesting.”
He thought for a while and had something in mind. It seemed that he did something to the young lady of this family and was kicked out.
So the heart realm this time could be the thinking or the sadness. Both heart realms were the most possible ones.
While the other three realms, happiness, fear and surprise were not likely. What would it be indeed? He could not say it for sure until he learned the details.
“I have to go back to the city if I want to find out what happened. Staying in the wild is absolutely not the right way out.”
He made the point clear to himself and walked back along the road, wondering how to gather the information needed.
At that time, he was in absolute darkness without knowing even the name of the city. When he was running out of the city, he ran too fast and didn’t notice the way. What should he do if he couldn’t even find the way back to the mansion?
Worried about facing the vicious servants again, Li Mu didn’t walk fast. He didn’t expect it but when he arrived at the city gate, it was closed.
“Damn it! I had something planned for the night. What to do now? I can’t even get into the city!” He thought.
Li Mu felt upset. He thought for a while and then realized that all city gates were closed at night in the old days. This was a tradition until modern society.
That was the situation. He could not get into the city or had anywhere to go. With no alternative, Li Mu wandered under the city wall and was noticed by the patrolling soldiers. “Hey, boy. What are you doing here?” They shouted at him.
Li Mu looked up and saw a few soldiers looking at him from the wall above. He quickly made up a story and shouted back, “My lord, I visited my relatives outside the city and was delayed on my way back. Could you please be so kind to let me in?”
“No,” a soldier shouted to him, “it is not possible to open the gate for personal reasons. Stay there even you have to suffer and get into the city tomorrow morning.”
“Boy, stay alert at night or you might be carried away by the wolves!” Another soldier joked at him.
There was a burst of laughter at the wall tower and then the soldiers stopped paying any attention to Li Mu.
Li Mu sneered and turned away from the city gate.
He didn’t walk far but found an empty ground near the city gate and sat down. He was not afraid of wolves or anything. The beasts were more sensitive than humans. Therefore, they could feel his fatal energy and avoided to be near him.
Nothing happened in the night. The next morning when the gate opened, Li Mu was the first one to get inside. He stood on the street looking around feeling lost and didn’t know which way to go.
Instead, he wandered in the city without purpose. Half of the day passed but he couldn’t remember which was the mansion that he was kicked out from.
He continued walking for a while then felt hungry. He was considering taking some money by force when he heard someone call him at the back.
“Are you brother Mu?”
Li Mu looked back. It was a little girl who was pretty and smart, dressed in a servant suit and looked at him in joyful surprise.
As soon her guess was confirmed, the little girl held his hands and complained with a low voice, “Have you lost your mind? How dare you wander in the streets? Hurry up and go with me!”
Li Mu didn’t resist. Instead, he followed as she dragged him. He was so eager to gather the information that would like so much if anyone talking to him. A little girl was good. Even if it was a demon, he would go with him anyway. He’d rather not think about if there was any danger followed.
The little girl took him through the streets and alleys which were quiet and did not have too many people. At last, she stopped at a nunnery and gently buckled the door ring.
A while later, the nunnery gate opened a slit and a little nun stood inside. She was surprised and asked, “Jing’er, why are you here?”
“Sister, please let me in and I will tell you.”
The little nun hesitated for a moment and dodged to let them in. Then she leaned out her head and looked around before she closed the gate tightly.
She turned back and complained, “Jing’er, this is nonsense. You can’t take a man here or I will be blamed if my master knows this.”
“I don’t have a choice, sister. Your master has a virtue of saving lives and I know you too. If you don’t take him in, I’m afraid he might lose his life.”
The little nun looked at Li Mu, and then said with reluctance, “Follow me.”
As they walked through the double courtyard, it was a meditation room in the backyard. The little nun opened the door, took the lead and walked in, with Li Mu and the girl following behind.
As they entered the room and took seats, the little nun asked, “Jing’er, what is it? Who wants his life?”
Jing’er replied, “This is Li Mu and he is the chosen husband of my lady. But our master doesn’t allow them and forced him out of the family. My lord is searching for him everywhere and planned to take his life. I have no choice but to ask for your help here.”
The little nun nodded and looked at Li Mu up and down. Li Mu felt a bit embarrassed and put up a polite smile at her.
“Your family name is Li?”
“That is so and you may call me Li.”
Jing’er couldn’t help laughing, “It is only one day I didn’t see you. Brother Mu, what makes you so courteous?” She asked.
“Er...” Li Mu couldn’t find a proper answer.
The little nun stared at him and asked to his surprise, “Where are you from, Mr. Li?”
Li Mu got cautious at once. “There is something more in what the little nun said. Does she find something out?” He thought.
“Sister, what is it?”
Jing’er also felt something was behind the words and couldn’t help asking.
The little nun raised her hand to stop her from talking, and she kept staring at Li Mu.
Li Mu smiled like there was nothing, and said calmly, “I come from the place I come.”
“When will you go back?”
“I’d like to go back anytime. I just can’t when the time is not right.”
The little nun nodded her head without saying anything further. She raised up and said to Jing’er, “It requires the one who ties the bells to untie them. The things between you are in your own hands to solve.”
Then she walked away without looking back and closed the door when left the room.
Jing’er didn’t understand what happened or what they were talking about. She waited until the little nun left and asked Li Mu, “What were you talking about?”
“Nothing, we discussed some buddha truth.”
“Oh.” Jing’er was puzzled. She could not figure out the meaning of their talk.
“Jing’er, is your lady well?”
“Not really. She worries about your safety so she sent me out to look for you in the early morning. Thank God, I found you before anyone else, or it will be dangerous for you.”
