Chapter 3 An Encounter

Two years later.

Early morning.

The first thing Wen Ran did when she woke up was to turn on her laptop and check her email.

The multinational email had been replied.

The content of the reply was very polite, but it turned out to be "I can't help you."

Wen Ran turned on the video saved on the desktop.

This was an interview program that she had accidentally browsed last week.

The protagonist of the interview was Yan Wangshu of Carlyle Company.

Wen Ran had an impression of this person's black diamond and his name, so she took a few more glances at the show.

Yan Wangshu was interviewed in his private residence to show off his precious collections. Among them was a traditional incense box of filigree called Fugui Mantang (Wealth and fortune deeds filled in the house).

Fugui Mantang was the work of Wen Ran's grandpa.

Wen Ran's grandpa was the inheritor of the traditional filigree. When she was a child, he used this delicate incense box to hold colorful stones for her to play with.

It was a pity that Wen Ran's father didn't have such talent in this aspect. He cherished Wen Ran very much when he had seen her talent in this aspect since Wen Ran's childhood.

He always held her in his arms and sat on the wooden rocking chair, saying that he would teach her how to make flower filigrees and that Ranran should grow up quickly.

However, he was too sick when Wen Ran was still a child.

Back then, Wen Ran had rushed to M Country and did not know how her grandfather's belongings had been dealt with. She did not expect this incense box to be in Yan Wangshu's hands.

Wen Ran wanted to repurchase the incense box.

She called the customer service department of Carlyle as a client and said she wanted to buy the incense box. The reply on the other side was, "The incense box is not in the sales rules. I need to ask it for you."

Wen Ran waited for two days. The other party replied that it was not for sale and did not tell her why.

She didn't give up and tried to write an email to the headquarters of Carlyle. As a result, she received a reply just now, "I can't help you."

Wen Ran was unhappy. She sat in the studio the whole morning, not in the mood to do anything.

In the afternoon, she went to find Bai Weiliang.

Bai Weiliang Studio was enormous, with seven desks alone.

Wen Ran helped to clean up the work desks. "Mr. Bai, I heard Xinyi is back, so I want to play with her. I may not be back tonight."

When Bai Weiliang heard this, he put down his tools and pretended to be serious. "You should walk out more. It's not appropriate for you to stay in the studio all the time?"

Bai Weiliang seemed to think of something and waved his hand. "Come here. I have something to tell you."

Wen Ran walked over and sat down.

Bai Weiliang said, " Ranran, the company intends to settle in the country. You should know that, right?"

"I know."

"We are working on it. It may be at these two years. This is my dream." Bai Weiliang took a deep breath and said, "Ranran, you've grown up. You have to be ready to work in the company."

"Alright."

"I am growing older, and each day my health deteriorates. If I cannot witness it that day, do not disappoint me; you should continue the career with Chengjing."

Bai Weiliang had never gotten married and had no children. He loved Wen Ran as his granddaughter.

Compared to Zhai Chengjing, he was more tolerant of Wen Ran.

For example, if Wen Ran was not used to the school life in M Country, Bai Weiliang would directly hire a family teacher; Wen Ran mentioned that she wanted to learn jade carving, so Bai Weiliang invited a professional master to teach her...

He thought he had paved the way for her career but was still worried.

Wen Ran looked at Bai Weiliang's mottled face and hugged him. "Mr. Bai, don't say that. You will live to a ripe old age."

Bai Weiliang lovingly patted Wen Ran on the back and said, "Didn't you say you were going to find Xinyi? Don't dawdle here."

After that, Bai Weiliang turned around and bent his back to polish the model in his hand.

Zhai Xinyi would join the company next week, so she took Wen Ran to buy new clothes and a new manicure.

Under the repeated urging of Wen Ran, they returned to the Zhai family's house after dinner.

As soon as she entered the door, Wen Ran asked, "Has Chengjing come back?"

"I don't know," Zhai Xinyi answered casually. Suddenly, she stopped changing her shoes and looked at Wen Ran with wide eyes. "You don't like my brother, do you, Wen Ran?"

How could this be possible?

Wen Ran blushed instantly and roared, "Don't talk nonsense!"

"Look, you're blushing." Zhai Xinyi poked Wen Ran on the arm and said excitedly, "No wonder you want to play with me. No wonder you keep urging me to go home. Ranran, don't hide it from me. Do you like my brother? Do you like him?"

This time, even her neck turned red. Wen Ran covered her mouth and growled, "Don't talk nonsense! I didn't like him!"

While they were chasing each other, the hall door was pushed open.

Zhai Chengjing looked at them. "What are you doing?"

Zhai Xinyi nudged Wen Ran, whose face was still red. "Chengjing, Ranran has been waiting for you for a long time."

Wen Ran staggered along the way. She didn't know if her senior brother had heard the nonsense of Xinyi, but now she felt embarrassed and directly explained the purpose of her visit. "Chengjing, I have something to talk to you about."

Zhai Chengjing nodded. "Let's talk in the study."

When they arrived at the study, Wen Ran told him from beginning to end that she wanted to buy the Flower Filigree Incense Box.

After listening to her, Zhai Chengjing said, "I will ask it for you."

"Thank you."

Zhai Chengjing reminded her, "But the hopes were not high. You know that Carlyle has been expanding the market of North America in the past two years, and our company is going to enter the domestic market. Our two companies are competitors. I can't tell if Yan Wangshu will sell it unless you ask Mr. Bai to try it?"

Wen Ran shook her head.

A high status as her teacher hadn't done others a special favor for decades.

She was not that ignorant.

Zhai Chengjing looked at Wen Ran and said, "By the way, Mr. Bai will arrange for you to work in the company in the second half of the year. Did he tell you?"

"Yes, he did."

"Do you have any ideas?"

Wen Ran shook her head. She didn't have any thoughts. She trusted and accepted all the arrangements of her teacher.

"Just focus on designing. Don't worry about anything else. Don't think too much, this is our own company." Seeing that she was a little worried, Zhai Chengjing continued, "I'll help you ask Yan Wangshu the box, no matter how much the money. Don't worry."

Wen Ran nodded absent-mindedly.

Two days later, Zhai Chengjing told Wen Ran that Yan Wangshu had refused to sell the Flower Filigree Incense Box because "Carlyle" had already awarded the box as the next "Apollo Jewelry Competition" champion.

Wen Ran checked it on the Internet. "Apollo Jewelry Competition" was an internal jewelry designer competition by Carlyle Company.

The public auction of the award-winning works could be regarded as a publicity means for Carlyle. It was also a gimmick to promote the new season's design.

When Zhai Xinyi heard this, she clapped her hands and devised an idea. "Why don't you go to the competition?"

Zhai Xinyi was making things up, but Wen Ran took her words to heart.

A month later.

Wen Ran went to look for Zhai Xinyi and told her that she had submitted the design work to Carlyle and obtained the offer.

Zhai Xinyi choked on her coffee and coughed a few times before she could catch her breath.

"Are you really going to the competition? It is our competition company." Zhai Xinyi was a little worried, but then she smiled again. "But it sounds exciting, Ranran, you're a spy now."

"Spy? Don't talk nonsense. I'll follow the rules and return as soon as I get the incense box."

"I'm just kidding." Zhai Xinyi calmed down and continued, "But if you want to go, you can't tell Mr. Bai and my brother. They won't agree."

"I know, that's why I came to you to discuss it."

Zhai Xinyi briefly paused before she took a sip of coffee. "Discuss it with me? You've decided, and you're coming to me for help."

Wen Ran didn't deny it.

She had been docile since childhood and had never done anything rebellious.

Now she felt a little guilty and scared.

Zhai Xinyi looked at Wen Ran and chuckled. "I support you, Ranran."

“...”

"I like to see you misbehaving." Zhai Xinyi found her adorable.

Wen Ran said, "...You have to help me."

Zhai Xinyi replied generously, "Okay! Leave the things in M Country to me."

The night before she returned home, Wen Ran made Bai Weiliang's favorite beef osmanthus rolls.

Bai Weiliang was eating the osmanthus rolls with black tea and did not know the purpose of Wen Ran, so he said a lot.

"It's good that you want to look around, Ranran. To be objective, you are indeed talented in design but haven't made any breakthroughs in the past few years."

"You are introverted and always stay in the studio. Your inspiration is limited."

"Go out and take a look. You might be able to gain some insights."

"I know a lot of senior craftsmen and artists in the country. Tell me beforehand if you want to visit them, and I'll arrange it for you."

In the end, Bai Weiliang was still reluctant to part with her. "Ranran, you can go home early if you don't feel well. According to your current design level, you can still have a place in the industry even if you don't break through. Don't be stressed."

Wen Ran hurriedly nodded.

She hoped to get the Flower Filigree Incense Box on this trip, and she hoped to have more inspiration in designing so that she could contribute to the company in the future.

The next day, Zhai Chengjing personally drove Wen Ran to the airport.

The airport road was very wide. At this time, there were not many cars, and they didn't feel fast even at 100 km/h speed of the car was not too fast.

Wen Ran rolled down the window and propped her head up with her hand. She looked at the blue sky outside the window. There were traces of planes slowly spreading.

Wen Ran was reluctant and uneasy. She turned to look at Zhai Xinyi.

Zhai Xinyi could tell what Wen Ran was thinking at a glance, so she took her hand and patted the back of her hand to comfort her.

When they arrived at the airport, Zhai Chengjing went to help Wen Ran deal with her luggage and documents.

Holding Wen Ran in her arms, Zhai Xinyi sadly said, "Come back if you're unhappy. We can think of another way to get that incense box."

Wen Ran held Zhai Xinyi in her arms and replied, "Okay."

"I'm really afraid you'll be bullied. It's so far away. Even if I can take a flight, but when I'm here, you'll probably be dead."

Wen Ran was amused by Xinyi and said reproachfully, "Xinyi, can't you say something nice?"

After a brief pause, Zhai Xinyi said, "Then, I wish you a romantic encounter."

Wen Ran couldn't help grabbing her waist. "You're talking nonsense again!"

Zhai Xinyi hurriedly covered her waist and ran away. "Are you angry? Do you really like..."

When Wen Ran saw Zhai Chengjing approaching, she quickly rushed over and covered Zhai Xinyi's mouth. "Stop talking! Chengjing is coming!"

Zhai Xinyi was teasing Wen Ran, not trying to stir up trouble, so she immediately stopped talking.

Zhai Chengjing came over and handed the certificate to Wen Ran. "Call us if you need anything, understand?"

Wen Ran nodded obediently. "Yes."

As they walked to the boarding gate, Zhai Xinyi held Wen Ran by the hand and said, "Don't be fooled by bad men, Ranran."

"You're talking nonsense again."

"I'm not talking nonsense. You look easy to fool. Men like the kind of women like you." Zhai Xinyi turned to look at Zhai Chengjing. "Chengjing, don't you think so?"

Zhai Chengjing knocked Zhai Xinyi on the head. "Don't talk nonsense."

He then said to Wen Ran, "Ranran, unlike at home, you should be on guard against people outside."

"I know."

When they waved goodbye, Zhai Xinyi hugged Wen Ran and whispered in a voice that only the two of them could hear, "I still hope you have a romantic encounter, haha."

She got what she wanted as Wen Ran massaged her waist.

Before Wen Ran entered, she turned around and waved goodbye.

Waving her hand, Zhai Xinyi hollered, "Don't be fooled by bad man!"

At the M Country airport, no one could understand it, but her loud voice still attracted many people's attention.

Then, Wen Ran saw Zhai Chengjing knocking Zhai Xinyi on the head.

Twelve hours later, the plane began to slide and land.

Shanghai was one of the most developed cities in the country.

It was the first time for Wen Ran to come to the city.

After getting off the plane, Wen Ran saw the gloomy and rainy weather outside.

She dragged her small suitcase and stood by the side of the road, waiting for the car. At the same time, she sent a message to her family saying that she was safe.

After a long time, there was still no driver. Wen Ran called the driver.

The phone rang for a long time before it was answered.

The driver sounded anxious. "Miss Wen, I'm sorry. There was a chain car accident on the road ahead. It's under traffic control now."

Wen Ran had a good temper and didn't blame him. "How long will it take to arrive?"

"I'll go ahead and ask."

The sound of conversation and rain came from the phone. After a long while, the driver replied, "Miss Wen, I didn't ask about the specific time, so I can't tell you it."

Wen Ran looked at the rain outside and took a deep breath.

"Then I'll try to take a taxi myself." Wen Ran comforted her considerately before hanging up the phone. "The road is slippery on a rainy day. Be careful."

Wen Ran put away her phone, looked around, and found a place to take a taxi with her suitcase.

According to the man, Wen Ran held an umbrella in one hand and pulled her suitcase with the other as she walked along the side of the road.

After walking for about seven or eight minutes, Wen Ran stopped and stood the suitcase at her feet.

She leaned the umbrella handle on her shoulder and took a tissue from her bag to wipe the water droplets on her forehead.

In late June, amidst heavy rain and persistent winds in Shanghai, there was a scorching heatwave.

Wen Ran didn't know if it was rain or sweat on her forehead.

She looked at the rain and felt that she seemed to have gone the wrong way or that the man had led her in the wrong direction.

Suddenly, a white sedan pulled over by the roadside, and the window glided down. A young fellow leaned in and offered, "Allow me to offer you a lift."

Wen Ran glanced at it and shook her head.

"I won't charge you. Let's become friends," the man said.

Wen Ran didn't say anything this time. She grabbed her suitcase and walked away quickly with vigilance.
