Chapter 4 The Boss Met His Old Subordinates

During the routine Meisi Group meeting on Monday, Cheng Ji formally introduced Xu Yan to the executive team. "Allow me to introduce Xu Yan, our new colleague who will be joining the president's office as a sales consultant."

As soon as he finished speaking, there was an uproar in the conference room. The company had a Marketing Department, overseen by Vice President Cheng Xu. If she was a sale, she should be sent to the Marketing Department.

Only individuals holding the position of assistant secretary or a comparable role should be allowed to join the president's office. Why would a sales consultant be a part of the president's office? What precisely was her role?

Cheng Xu asked, "What is the role of a sales consultant in the president's office?"

Cheng Ji responded, "She will assume responsibility for the sales operations and report directly to me, without the need for liaising with other departments."

The marketing director asked, "Is it parallel to the function of our Marketing Department?"

Cheng Ji glanced at Cheng Xu and said, "She will assess the Marketing Department's sales plan in her capacity as a sales consultant. If it proves satisfactory, it will be implemented; otherwise, improvements will be made."

Cheng Xu looked grim. The sales consultant in the president's office reviewed the proposal from the Marketing Department, just like the vice president did. Wasn't this a direct challenge to his authority?

It was an undeniable fact that the performance of Meisi Group had declined, but he cannot be solely held accountable for it. Cheng Ji took over Meisi Group after his father Cheng Zhiyuan's sudden death. As a result, the company faced inherent challenges.

As the vice president, he had been trying his best to give advice to the company. Due to the stress, he needed to rely on sleeping pills to fall asleep.

At this time, the others also cast peculiar glances towards him. Was Cheng Ji trying to usurp the role of the Vice President? After all, it seemed that the sales consultant played a similar role to that of a vice president.

They wondered if there would be any significant internal conflict in the upcoming days.

Xu Yan noticed the strange atmosphere in the conference room. She stood up, bowed to the crowd, and said generously, "I'm Xu Yan, and I anticipate your guidance moving forward."

Cheng Xu took the lead in making things difficult for Xu Yan. "Miss Xu, given your remarkable achievements at such a young age, may I inquire about your previous work experience?"

Xu Yan pursed her lips and smiled at him. "I've been working as an assistant medical examiner for three years."

"Assistant medical examiner?" The mere mention of this occupation often prompted awe and a sense of unfortunate circumstances in certain people.

Cheng Xu looked at his cousin, Cheng Ji, and said, "Do you not find our current talent selection criteria rather lenient?"

As an assistant medical examiner, she joined Meisi Group as a sales consultant. Though her position may not sound prestigious, she wielded the same authority as the vice president. It was so unusual that it made him wonder if she had made a money deal with Cheng Ji.

Cheng Ji could discern their thoughts based on the subtle expressions of each person present, therefore he spoke up, "Miss Xu has relevant industry experience before she worked as a former medical examiner. It was her contribution that allowed us to achieve a sales breakthrough at the E-commerce Festival this time."

Xu Yan humbly replied, "You're too kind, Mr. Cheng. This accomplishment is solely attributed to the Meisi Group. I wouldn't dare to claim any credit for it."

The crowd exclaimed. Cheng Xu's expression turned even more grim.

Cheng Ji said, "Now that we have introduced the new team member, it's time to convene a meeting."

Today's meeting will primarily focus on strategies to sustain market share and sales following the remarkable surge in purchases during the E-commerce Festival.

Cheng Ji approached both the marketing director and Cheng Xu, seeking their opinions. One of them admitted to not having formulated a plan yet, while the other, emotionally said that he wanted to hear Miss Xu's thoughts on the matter.

Xu Yan provided a concise response, stating, "To begin with, we must enhance our service quality. Our primary clientele consists of women who are meticulous and highly value after-sales service quality."

Cheng Xu didn't quite agree with her.

Xu Yan reiterated, "I must emphasize one crucial point since the majority of our targeted clients consists of women. Under no circumstances will I tolerate any private comments about gender antagonism from our employees online or in public."

Cheng Xu sneered. "Are you blowing this out of proportion? Why should we concern ourselves with the personal lives of our employees outside of work hours?"

Xu Yan changed her humble attitude and said coldly, "We should do so, even if it seems challenging. As the adage goes, words have the potential to bring disaster."

Cheng Ji agreed and turned to instruct the deputy general in charge of administrative logistics, "After the meeting, draft a notice and send it to each department."

Cheng Xu curled his mouth with a contemptuous expression.

After the meeting, Cheng Xu followed Cheng Ji into the president's office, closed the door, and said discontentedly, "Arranging Miss Xu's work in this manner poses a tremendous challenge for me."

Cheng Ji feigned ignorance regarding his statement. "What do you mean by 'difficult'? Everyone is dedicatedly striving for the advancement of the company's performance."

Cheng Xu exclaimed with concern, "What are you trying to say? Does she have the authority to reject the proposal from the Marketing Department? If I have agreed to the proposal, does that mean she can also reject me? Furthermore, am I allowed to decline her proposal?"

Cheng Ji smiled and said, "If there will be any disagreement between you two, we can discuss it in a meeting."

Cheng Xu said, "When can we implement the plan by having another meeting for discussion? This will obviously cause internal friction. If you want to do it this way, you might as well just remove me."

Cheng Ji was annoyed by his interruption and said, "I am the CEO of Meisi Group. Do I not have the right to arrange a position? If it weren't for her help in planning proposals during this E-commerce Festival, we would all be fired. Do you still have the mood to talk to me like this?"

His words made Cheng Xu feel ashamed. He said resentfully, "I offended you. I'm sorry, Mr. Cheng."

Cheng Ji didn't reply. Just then, Xu Yan came to the door, knocked, and asked, "Mr. Cheng, do you have a moment? I would like to discuss another matter with you."

"Come in." He nodded.

Cheng Xu turned and left. When he met Xu Yan, he smiled mockingly.

Xu Yan sat down opposite Cheng Ji and said, "I didn't finish all the follow-up plans in the meeting just now. After the E-commerce Festival, our online sales will definitely decline. Next, I want to go to the distributors and arrange for offline physical store sales."

Cheng Ji nodded and said, "Okay, just follow your plan. You don't have to report to me specifically."

Xu Yan said, "I'm going to visit Qian Kun today."

Qian Kun was the leading individual distributor of skincare and cosmetics in Canghai City. He served as the representative for various international brands and possessed a sales network that extended to second-tier and third-tier cities.

Cheng Ji asked her, "I remember that Qian Kun has a good relationship with Xinlan Group. Will he collaborate with you?"

Xu Yan said confidently, "With Meisi Group's rapid ascendancy, he is astute enough to accept my offer."

-

Xinlan Group held its regular meeting on Monday, which predominantly centered around the burgeoning sales growth of Meisi Group. Everyone believed that, currently, Meisi Group's live broadcast was becoming popular. If they still focus on online sales, Xinlan Group will not have an advantage.

The Group's next priority was to expand its offline sales.

Jiang Han immediately thought of Qian Kun, the largest local investor. The two groups had always maintained a strong partnership with Qian Kun. With the Meisi Group thriving in its business, he should align with Qian Kun and thwart any attempts by Cheng Ji to exploit the situation.

After the meeting, he immediately asked the driver to drive him to Qian Kun's company.

Upon his arrival, as he sat down for a brief tea break with Qian Kun, the latter's secretary promptly buzzed him on the internal line. "Mr. Qian, the receptionist said that a sales consultant from Meisi Group is requesting a meeting with you. Would you like to see her?"

Qian Kun replied coldly, "A literary sales consultant wants to see me? Decline!"

The secretary said, "She said her surname was Xu and claimed to be acquainted with you."

Qian Kun said angrily, "Who isn't familiar with my name? What importance does Meisi Group even possess? It just made some progress in its sales, and now it has the audacity to deploy an average Joe to handle me? Just decline the person."

After hanging up the phone, Jiang Han asked, "Why are you so angry?"

"Who does Cheng Ji think he is, looking down on me? He's in dire need of my assistance, yet he only sends a sales consultant?" Qian Kun said discontentedly.

"What is the role of a sales consultant?" Jiang Han asked, amused.

Qian Kun said, "I don't care it. Xinlan Group has dominated the industry all these years, and you, Mr. Jiang, have condescended to come to me. Cooperation requires sincerity."

Jiang Han was calculating in his mind who Meisi Group had dispatched. As a prominent distributor like Qian Kun, even if Cheng Ji didn't show up, it was highly likely that Cheng Xu and the other vice presidents would be absent. Otherwise, given Qian Kun's volatile nature, no one would stand a chance to enter the office.

Now that Cheng Ji and Cheng Xu did not come, an unknown sales consultant took their place. It must be Xu Yan, because no one else dared to come. Besides, Cheng Ji would not let others come, driven by his cautious nature.

Thinking of her attitude toward him a few days ago, Jiang Han smiled. After discussing the details of the recent cooperation with Qian Kun, Jiang Han chatted with Qian Kun for a while.

They chatted until nearly noon and were still eager to continue.

Qian Kun drank a lot of tea and went to the toilet several times. He himself was fat, and the tea helped reduce the grease in his body. As he continued to drink the tea, he went hypoglycemic, causing his hands to tremble slightly while holding the teacup.

What on earth was happening today? Jiang Han didn't want to leave after chatting for so long. Qian Kun felt too embarrassed to ask him to leave.

-

Xu Yan was informed by the receptionist that Mr. Qian was talking to an important guest, so she sat on the sofa in the hall and waited. After waiting for an hour, she asked the receptionist to call again. The secretary said that the guest had not left yet.

She asked the receptionist, "From which company does today's guest come from?"

The receptionist shook her head and said, "I don't know. Mr. Qian went downstairs to welcome him."

Xu Yan curled her lips. Except for the major foreign brands' representatives, only people like Jiang Han can make Qian Kun welcome him in person.

She hoped it was not Jiang Han who came today.

In the past, Meisi Group experienced a decline in its sales and was not highly regarded by the distributor. However, Xu Yan didn't want to address herself as the assistant of Jiang Han, so she had to wait in the hall.

But it was almost lunchtime and no one had come out yet. She had a bad foreboding that it could very well be Jiang Han on the upper floor, aware of her presence downstairs and deliberately prolonging the wait.

Xu Yan went to tell the receptionist, "Please call Mr. Qian again and tell him that Xu Yan is here to visit him."

Noticing that she had been waiting all morning, the receptionist, a woman as well, felt sorry for her and contacted the secretary to provide an update.

The secretary knocked on the door and said to Qian Kun, "Mr. Qian, the receptionist said that Meisi Group's sales consultant who comes to visit you is Xu Yan."

"Xu Yan?" Qian Kun repeated the name and asked Jiang Han with a strange expression, "Mr. Jiang, did you have an assistant named Xu Yan before?"

Jiang Han nodded. "Yes, Mr. Qian has a good memory."

Qian Kun opened his mouth slightly and said in a daze, "She's the sales consultant of Meisi Group? Why would she work there?"

Jiang Han pursed his lips and said, "It's been three years since she left Xinlan Group. I don't have much information about her."

Qian Kun stood up and said, "I haven't seen her for a long time. You are her old boss. This is a rare opportunity for us to meet. It's my treat at noon. Let's have lunch together."

Jiang Han looked embarrassed. "There's no need for a meal. I feel rather awkward with the plot of a former boss meeting his former subordinates."

Qian Kun didn't care at all. "What's embarrassing? We are all in the same industry now. We can just have a small talk and who knows, we might even collaborate in the future."

Jiang Han still wanted to refuse, but Qian Kun reached out his fat palm and pressed it on his shoulder. "Hey, why so shy? Be a man. Let's go."

When Xu Yan saw Jiang Han and Qian Kun coming out of the elevator one after another, she almost sprained her ankle.

What terrible luck she had encountered.
