Chapter 13 What Was Your Stand?

Jiang Han nearly tallied the number of words uttered by Cheng Ji in order to gauge the duration required for him to make a call.

After ending the call with Cheng Ji, Xu Yan immediately received a call from Jiang Han, leaving her no time to dwell on the issue.

"Hello." Hearing her trembling voice, Jiang Han said quickly and decisively, "First, tell me your current address. Second, call the police. I'll find someone from Hengshan City to take care of you."

There was no response from Xu Yan, so he was very anxious. "Did you hear me, Xu Yan? Answer me."

"I heard you." Xu Yan sniffed and replied, "I'm staying in Room 1208 of the Witton Hotel."

Jiang Han said, "Understood. Call the police immediately. If the room is still safe, don't go out."

Having received his instructions, it was as if she had taken a reassurance medication. After ending the call, Xu Yan calmed down. She called the police first, then wet the bath towel in the room and blocked the crack between the door.

As soon as the crack was blocked, the person outside the door lit a lighter. With the crack blocked, the smoke was temporarily halted from infiltrating. Xu Yan called the guests on the same floor, reminding them that the floor was on fire and that they should come out of the room as soon as possible.

After a while, there was a noise outside the corridor. A guest wielded a fire extinguisher and put out the fire at the door.

The hotel staff remembered that there were still people in the room, so they found some tools to open Xu Yan's door. When they saw Xu Yan in the room, they shouted in a panic, "Miss Xu, are you all right?"

Xu Yan turned on the flashlight of her phone and said with a sneer, "I'm not dead yet, but you will be in trouble."

The hotel staff smiled and apologized to her. "I'm sorry to disturb you, Miss Xu. Our hotel will handle this matter properly and give you an explanation."

Xu Yan stood at the door and looked at the people outside. There were two people who did not look like good people. She said sternly, "I've already called the police. Call your boss here. This is a premeditated case of arson and murder, and your hotel cannot handle it solely on its own."

The guest on the same floor frowned and said, "Arson and murder? How come? How can the security guards at your hotel be so inadequate?"

"Fortunately, this lady called us in advance and asked us to come out. Otherwise, had the fire erupted, we would all die in the fire. You should inform the police and let them investigate this matter thoroughly!"

A few people did not return to the room, with their hands crossed in front of their chests, looking determined to insist on calling the police to the end.

That was what Xu Yan wanted. With the onlookers in the corridor, no one dared to do anything to her.

The police arrived quickly, conducted on-site investigation, made records, and reviewed surveillance footage.

Jiang Han came out of his room and made a phone call while walking to the elevator. He reached out to a close associate of Jiang Qinghua, who held a prominent role in Canghai City and had extensive networking capabilities.

When the other party heard that one of Jiang Han's friends had encountered a tricky problem in Hengshan City, he didn't ask too much. He directly gave Jiang Han a phone number and asked him to contact that person.

After expressing his gratitude, Jiang Han promptly made a phone call to that person and elucidated the situation. The person assured Jiang Han of an immediate investigation and vowed to ensure Xu Yan's safety.

Only then did Jiang Han feel relieved. He focused on driving and headed towards the direction of Hengshan City. When he was driving on the highway, he called Xu Yan.

"How's it going? Has the police arrived?" He asked hurriedly as soon as the call was connected.

Xu Yan said calmly, "I'm fine. The police have arrived. They are making a statement for me now."

"I have already contacted a person in Hengshan City who will take care of the situation. You don't have to worry." Jiang Han said.

Xu Yan pursed her lips and managed to utter two words. "Thank you!"

She didn't know what else to say to him. Now that she had to cooperate with the police to make a statement, it was not appropriate to say too much.

"I'll be there as soon as possible. Don't be afraid." Jiang Han comforted her.

Xu Yan said, "You don't have to come over. I can handle it."

"I'm already on my way." Jiang Han hung up the phone.

He knew that she would be safe and there would be no more accidents, but he did not slow down the car speed. The navigation repeatedly warned that he was over speed. After driving for a while, he was so angry that he called Cheng Ji again.

"What's wrong with you? Why did you let her go on a business trip alone? Can't you arrange for two more people accompany her? Can't you afford the trip expenses?"

Cheng Ji defended himself. "I said I would arrange a man colleague for her. She expressed her preference for independence and declined any colleague."

Jiang Han scolded, "Are you the boss or is she the boss? Are you unable to make arrangements if she refuses?"

"This was an accident. We didn't expect it. If I had known that she would be in danger, I wouldn't have let her go alone. She is safe now. You don't have to be so angry," Cheng Ji said.

Jiang Han continued to admonish, "You should be grateful that she's okay, otherwise..."

"Otherwise?" Cheng Ji interrupted him. "Xu Yan is an employee of Meisi Group. Why do you care about her?"

"Are you being unreasonable? She called me when she was in danger!" Jiang Han felt rather amused. A stranger could fight for justice, while his own concern for Xu Yan required a stand?

Cheng Ji sneered. "Don't get mad at me, Jiang Han. I don't know why she called you, but you know very well why she went to Xia'an City, a small place below the 3rd tier, to work as an assistant medical examiner."

Jiang Han's face instantly turned cold. He hung up the phone and stepped on the accelerator. The car was racing on the highway in the early morning.

Usually, it would take one an hour and a half to travel from Linjiang City to Hengshan City on the highway. However, Jiang Han managed to reach his destination in just one hour, including his highway driving.

When he arrived at the Witton Hotel, he parked his car directly in front of the entrance. The security guard approached him and asked him to park the car properly. He angrily replied, "I will relocate the car after I finish negotiating with the police."

When he walked to the lobby of the hotel, he saw Xu Yan sitting on the sofa, lowering her head to make a statement with the police. The person whom he had contacted earlier came up to him and asked, "Are you Jiang Han, Mr. Jiang?"

He nodded. "Yes. I'll talk to you later."

As he approached the sofa, he said in a low voice, "Xu Yan."

Xu Yan looked up and was a little surprised to see him. "Oh, you're here already?"

He walked up to her, leaned over, and asked, "How's everything going? Is everything clear?"

The policeman in charge of the case replied, "We have collected relevant evidence. Next, we will do our best to investigate the suspect."

Jiang Han said, "I talked to Mr. Gao, your vice director, on the way here."

The police officer nodded, gazing at Jiang Han who had just exchanged pleasantries. He stated, "The suspects have issued a confession. The severity of this incident is grave. We possess pertinent evidence that establishes their collusion with the two people responsible for the assault in the night market earlier tonight. Xu Yan is not only an upstanding individual but also an exemplary member of society."

Jiang Han didn't like to hear these empty words. He said gloomily, "But you didn't protect her well. Those people dared to bring gasoline to the hotel and set it on fire. It appears that the civic environment in your city necessitates rectification."

The policeman was too embarrassed to answer. Xu Yan said in a low voice, "Enough. I'm feeling a bit fatigued and would like to retire early."

"Shall we move to another hotel?" Jiang Han asked her in a gentle tone.

"You can live in our internal guest house. It's the safest place. We will treat this case with utmost seriousness, as it is under the personal supervision of Mr. Gao." One of the police officers said.

Jiang Han asked Xu Yan's opinion, "Would you like to live there?"

Xu Yan shook her head, tonight's events were really terrible, making her feel anxious whenever she thought about still being in Hengshan City. She said, "I want to go to Mingchuan City."

The police officer frowned and said, "It will take four hours to drive to Mingchuan City. It would not be wise to drive without proper rest, as it could lead to potential accidents."

Xu Yan pursed her lips and said nothing. Jiang Han waved at the man who had been waiting for him. When he approached, Jiang Han asked, "Do you work night shifts? Drive us to Mingchuan City and I'll pay you for it."

The man nodded. "I have a former special forces colleague who possesses both endurance for late nights and exceptional skills. I'll ask him to send you home."

"I will need to trouble you to call him over to help." Jiang Han said.

When the man went to make a phone call. Jiang Han asked Xu Yan, "Do you still want to gather your belongings?"

"I have already packed my luggage. It is upstairs." Xu Yan stood up and was about to go upstairs to get it.

Seeing that she was exhausted, Jiang Han placed a hand on her shoulder and said, "Sit down. I'll get it for you."

Xu Yan said in a stiff tone, "Thank you."

When Jiang Han got the luggage from upstairs, the driver arrived. After a simple greeting, Jiang Han handed the key to him and asked Xu Yan to get in the car first.

He ushered the man who had been waiting for him towards the emergency exit, producing a wad of cash from his satchel. He spoke, "Fellow, thank you for your diligent efforts this evening. Accept this modest expression of my gratitude and buy yourself some night snack. Should you go to Canghai City at some point, do not hesitate to seek me out."

The man declined. "You're being too kind, Mr. Jiang. It is my responsibility to handle this situation."

Jiang Han pressed the money into his hand with force. "I apologize for disturbing your sleep with such a personal matter during the late hours. Please accept it. There are still a few more journeys you need to make for the follow-up matter."

The man said, "The nature of this situation is very severe. Mr. Gao has ordered a strict investigation. This group of gangsters has been committing crimes in Hengshan City for a while. It is imperative that we apprehend them in their entirety this time."

"Thank you for your dedication. Allow me to leave first. I am concerned that my friend may become frightened and emotionally vulnerable. Should you go to Canghai City, be sure to seek me out."

"Sure, you can leave first. I'll let you know if there's any progress."

Xu Yan leaned against the backseat. Only then did she feel relieved. Jiang Han bought a new car, not the one he used to drive. The air freshener emitted a pleasant bergamot scent, which he particularly liked.

She suddenly felt a little sad. Jiang Han was a little stubborn. Jiang Han was somewhat obstinate; he had grown accustomed to a certain way of doing things and was resistant to change. She had also developed the same habit as him when she was with him. She would instinctively seek him out when she faced any challenges.

Why did she make such a mistake?

She looked out of the window and saw Jiang Han walking out of the lobby in a hurry. He soon came to the car, opened the door, and got in, bringing with him the chilly gust of wind.

Xu Yan stepped aside. Jiang Han tilted his head to look at her and ordered the driver, "Fellow, let's drive to Mingchuan City."

"Sure." The driver answered, started the car, and turned right.

Jiang Han leaned closer to her. Xu Yan felt their clothes tightly pressed against each other, and her mind was instantly flooded with some romantic scenes.

Her cheeks flushed, but luckily the car was dimly lit, preventing her from being exposed.

As the car drove stably, Jiang Han sat up straight again. It was extremely quiet in the car, with no one uttering a word.

After a long while, Xu Yan thanked Jiang Han. "Thank you for your help tonight."

Jiang Han cast a cunning glance at her. "I'm delighted that you could still remember my phone number."
