Mr. Wu thought he might have forgotten, so she reminded Gu Yu'an, "She's the quiet young lady in the blue dress, the one with tendonitis."
"Alright, I got it. You can go back to work," Gu Yu'an said as he handed the information to the nurse at the front desk, then went straight to his office.
Xu Weiyan rushed to the theater in a taxi, and she was a bit out of breath from the rush.
"Weiyan!" There was a girl in a black suit standing at the entrance of the theater. She had a clean face, and when she spotted Xu Weiyan, she excitedly waved her hand and pulled Xu Weiyan towards the inside of the theater.
"Hurry, we're running out of time!"
"Which part are we performing in this show, Song Bai?"
"Cat."
Xu Weiyan nodded. She knew how to play this part.
Smaller theaters like this usually performed musicals that had been done before, without much innovation. Xu Weiyan had encountered most of them.
Xu Weiyan had her own black professional outfit that she often wore for performances, so standing among the other theater staff didn't make her stand out.
"Director, this is the one I mentioned to you before, Xu Weiyan, a talented music graduate at Yuncheng A University. Her professional skills are absolutely top-notch." Song Bai introduced Xu Weiyan to the director while holding her hand.
The director looked Xu Weiyan up and down, nodded at her, and then shouted into the distance, "Liu."
The person called Liu quickly walked over and asked, "Director, what's going on?"
The director pointed to Xu Weiyan and said, "Give her a script, tell her which part she'll be playing, and, by the way, she's substituting for the cello position."
The director seemed to have other things to do, so he left after giving his instructions.
Liu pushed the script toward her and explained, "Here's how it works. For the cello position, you only need to play at the climax, like in these parts." He pointed to the sheet.
Xu Weiyan listened attentively, nodding occasionally.
…
The musical went smoothly, with a scattered audience below, but it didn't affect the performance on stage. Everyone was very dedicated, and Xu Weiyan forced a smile, focusing on finishing the performance with all her might.
Her right wrist was in pain, and with each pull of the strings, the stabbing pain grew worse. After the performance, she felt her wrist had gone numb.
Song Bai rushed over to ask, "How did it go?"
Xu Weiyan nodded and said, "Thank you." If it weren't for Song Bai's kind invitation, she wouldn't have had the opportunity to perform.
"Let's go meet the director again and see what he has to say," Song Bai, a very enthusiastic girl, believed that Xu Weiyan was really talented and shouldn't be hidden away.
The director had just finished negotiating with the person in charge, and as they approached, the person in charge left, knowing they had something to discuss.
"Director, my introduction was accurate, wasn't it? Just now, everything was perfect, and she did it without any prior rehearsal. She's really amazing," Song Bai said.
The director chuckled and waved his hand, saying, "Alright, I know you're talkative. Do you think the young lady from a prestigious university would be willing to come to this small place?"
Both of them looked at Xu Weiyan, and she quickly nodded, feeling a bit embarrassed. "Even though I graduated from A University, I'm not that talented," she said.
"Well, we'll have a large-scale performance a month later. If you perform well, I'll make you a regular worker."
"So, is she an intern now?" Song Bai leaned in to ask.
The director smiled, "Of course, but our pay here isn't very high, so don't be put off by it, young lady."
Xu Weiyan shook her head. "No..."
The director's gaze shifted to her hand and he asked, "I noticed that when you were playing the cello earlier, your hand didn't seem comfortable. Now that I look closely, it appears to be swollen. Are you okay?"
Surprised by his keen observation, Xu Weiyan shook her head, her eyes filled with gratitude.
When Xu Weiyan returned to her accommodation from the theater, she remembered the doctor who had called her yesterday. She heated a basin of hot water, soaked a towel in it, wrung it out, and applied it to her hand. It did indeed provide some relief.
She took a few more pills that she prescribed yesterday according to the instructions.
Appointments at large hospitals are often difficult to secure, and she had already canceled her appointment for today. She wasn't sure if she should go to the hospital. The medical fees were high, and she felt that her condition was just a minor ailment that didn't require treatment at a large hospital.
Moreover, there was someone there she felt guilty towards – it was likely that Gu Yu'an didn't want to see her again either.
Gu Yu'an got married, with that silver ring.
She was the only one who had not moved forward in her memory.
At noon, Xu Weiyan changed into a simple casual outfit and went to meet Song Bai. She felt that she owed Song Bai a favor, so she agreed to meet and planned to treat her to this meal.
The place where they arranged to have lunch was an old restaurant that had been around for many years. It offered a wide variety of dishes, and it was quite crowded. Interestingly, this restaurant was conveniently close to Chenyang Hospital.
Song Bai took her hand and sat down by the window. Most of the time, Song Bai ordered dishes and asked her a few questions from time to time.
Perhaps because there were too many people, there were only some cold dishes on their table after about 20 minutes.
The doorbell in the store rang. They were close to the door and could hear it clearly.
Song Bai was busy looking at her phone, and Xu Weiyan didn't raise her head either. She held her tea cup in both hands, silently gazing out the window.
At the entrance.
"Hey, Yu'an, aren't we going to the private room upstairs?"
Pei Wenxuan looked at Gu Yu'an with a puzzled expression. And then he saw Gu Yu'an sitting down casually on an empty seat.
"Just sit here. I have an operation in the afternoon," he said lightly.
A familiar voice drew Xu Weiyan's attention back, and she couldn't help but turn her head, meeting the gaze of Gu Yu'an, who happened to be looking her way.
Gu Yu'an had switched to a black shirt, not varying much from his style yesterday.
With just one glance, Xu Weiyan nervously lowered her head and shifted inside, avoiding any further eye contact with him.
The seat he was in was separated from hers by just one aisle.
"Okay, okay." Pei Wenxuan was accustomed to Gu Yu'an being a workaholic, so she sat down opposite him.
Soon, two more people joined their table, and Pei Wenxuan called out to the waitress, "Hello, we'd like to order."
Meanwhile, on Xu Weiyan's table, most of the dishes had already been served. Song Bai set his phone aside and enthusiastically said to her, "You probably haven't tried the food here, have you? Let me tell you, people who grew up in Yuncheng City love this place."
Xu Weiyan had also grown up in Yuncheng City, so when she heard this, she smiled and picked up her chopsticks to try the dish.
"By the way, Weiyan, you've been away for so many years. Are you used to it?" Song Bai had known her for several years and knew something about her.
Xu Weiyan replied, "I'm fine."
"Oh... then why did you decide to go so far away for a girl? Aren't your parents worried?"
"I... I guess I liked the climate there, and my parents... they're doing fine."
Xu Weiyan glanced at Gu Yu'an out of the corner of her eye. He seemed engrossed in listening to the complaints from the people across from them and probably hadn't noticed her looking.
For some reason, she didn't want Gu Yu'an to know about her past.
This included the reasons for her leaving Yuncheng City, as well as her original family, the memories she had been avoiding – she hoped they could remain buried deep within her forever.
Song Bai nodded, sensing that she didn't want to discuss these matters, so she quickly changed the topic.
"I have surgery in the afternoon, so I need to go back for a bit. You guys enjoy your meal," he said.
Halfway through the meal, Gu Yu'an got up and left. They were all doctors, so they understood each other and did not say anything.
It wasn't until his figure disappeared outside the door that Song Bai quietly leaned in and said to Xu Weiyan, "The guy who just left, he's really handsome, with a kind of restrained charm."
"He was here just now. I was too embarrassed to say it."
Hearing this, Xu Weiyan twitched the corner of her mouth. "Really?"
"Yeah, and he's a doctor at a big hospital, gets a good salary, and he's handsome. Sigh, we can't compete with that," Song Bai sighed.
Soon, Xu Weiyan's phone received a text message. She set down her chopsticks and picked it up to check.
The message was from an unknown number: "After you finish your meal, come to the same clinic room you visited last time."
Obviously, this was a message from Gu Yu'an. Xu Weiyan put down her phone and thought for a moment.
After finishing the meal, Xu Weiyan informed Song Bai that she had some other matters to attend to and wouldn't be joining her.
Song Bai wasn't suspicious and said her goodbyes before leaving.
At this time, most of the doctors were either having their meals or very busy, so there weren't many people around.
Xu Weiyan, relying on her memory, arrived at the clinic room she had visited last time and hesitated before knocking on the door.
A voice came from inside. "Come in."
Gu Yu'an looked up and saw that it was her. He asked her to sit down.
He set down the large stack of documents in his hand and looked at her. "Do you know that your injury has worsened?"
Xu Weiyan replied in a low voice, "I know."
It seemed that Gu Yu'an had noticed her right hand at the restaurant earlier. After the performance this morning, the swollen area had become even redder and larger.
Even if Xu Weiyan didn't say anything, Gu Yu'an knew why she had exacerbated her pain. His expression was somewhat cold as he asked, "So why didn't you come this morning?"
Xu Weiyan replied, "I had other matters this morning, I'm sorry."
She carefully observed Gu Yu'an's expression, unsure if she was worried that he might misunderstand or if she genuinely felt guilty.
"Ms. Xu, I have to remind you that if your illness worsens, it will accompany you for the rest of your life. If you don't want to give up your cello at such a young age, I advise you to cooperate with the treatment."
Xu Weiyan opened her mouth, wanting to respond, but the sound of a knock interrupted her.
A young woman dressed as a nurse came in with a medical instrument in her hand. "Dr. Gu, I've brought the equipment," she said.
Mr. Wu took a moment to size up the woman who had appeared during their break, and suddenly realized that she was the same girl in the blue dress from yesterday.
Why was she here during non-treatment hours?
"Physical therapy, equipment fixation," Gu Yu'an pointed to the instrument. Mr. Wu placed the equipment on the table and left on her own accord.
Xu Weiyan was surprised and asked, "Is this really necessary? Can't it be done with some other method?"
"Of course, there are other methods," Gu Yu'an added. "But for patients who aren't conscious about it, this is the most suitable." He hinted at something.
Xu Weiyan fell silent, but the thought of her one-month trial period, during which she couldn't avoid playing the cello, weighed on her. She had worked hard to secure this opportunity, so giving up easily would be a letdown.
"I... I choose another treatment method. I promise, apart from playing the cello, I won't overuse my right hand." She spoke earnestly, hiding her right hand behind her back, as if afraid Gu Yu'an would actually fix the equipment to her hand.
Gu Yu'an chuckled when he noticed her defensive gesture. Why had he come to treat her during his break, anyway?
