Chapter 4 Misunderstanding

When Xu Weiyan arrived at the hospital where her mother was, a nurse asked her, "Are you a family member of Ms. Liang Jie?"

Xu Weiyan nodded and followed the nurse to the ward where Liang Jie was located, Room 1142.

The area was cordoned off, as it was a section designated for psychiatric patients.

Xu Weiyan took a deep breath, ensuring she was mentally prepared, before pushing the door and walking in.

As she entered, Liang Jie's eyes met hers with a scrutinizing gaze, examining her from head to toe as if she were an adversary.

Xu Weiyan instinctively took a step back. It had been a long time since she had seen Liang Jie, and her mother seemed even more fierce than before, which made her feel fearful without realizing it.

Liang Jie was pale, and her wrist was wrapped in two thin layers of gauze. As soon as she opened her mouth, she exposed her purpose of feigning suicide. "If I hadn't committed suicide, would you have come to see me at all?"

"Do you still see me as your mother? What have I done wrong to you since you were a child? How dare you lock me up here?"

Her face contorted with rage as she spoke, and she got up from the bed. Barefoot, she took a few steps toward Xu Weiyan and, just like in the past, grabbed her by the hair.

Liang Jie's actions were swift, and Xu Weiyan was powerless to resist. Childhood memories flooded back, and she couldn't breathe. She screamed and covered her head.

"Xu Weiyan, you've been corrupted by your father. You've become just like him. It's all your fault. You didn't listen to me. Why? Why..." Liang Jie ranted as she continued to grip Xu Weiyan's hair.

Liang Jie was surprisingly strong, and her eyes almost popped out of their sockets, which shocked the nurse who heard the noise and rushed in.

One of the nurses hurried to stop Liang Jie, and the other protected Xu Weiyan.

It took quite some time before the two were finally pulled apart.

In the next moment, Xu Weiyan ran out of the ward in a disheveled state.

"Don't go, Xu Weiyan. Take me home. I don't want to be here."

The nurse shouted, "Calm down, calm down."

"Miss, I'm not sick. It's true." She pointed in the direction where Xu Weiyan had left. "It's all her fault. My daughter was unfilial. She framed me for being sick and wanted to lock me up here. She's very bad."

*

With a heart full of fear, Xu Weiyan held her chest as she rushed out. Her hair had been disheveled, and her hair tie had slipped inside.

"Miss Xu." The nurse stopped her.

"I don't know the history between you and your mother, but to avoid upsetting her, I suggest someone else comes to visit her next time."

Xu Weiyan didn't say anything. She and Liang Jie were the only ones in her home.

Xu Weiyan had a free time in the theater these days, and some people even took on external tasks. Her hand was still injured, so she had nothing to do except stay in the theater.

She went to the hospital on time for an injection and did not see Gu Yu'an again. It was Mr. Wu or other nurses who helped her.

As Gu Yu'an had mentioned, the other times for injections didn't take long, usually around two hours to finish. Her hand had already reduced in swelling, but it was still a bit red.

The IV room was full that day, so she had to sit on a bench in the corridor, receiving her IV. Directly across from her was the front desk on this floor.

It was now noon, and most of the patients were resting. There were only two nurses at the reception desk.

She overheard one of the nurses say, "Our hospital's eligible bachelor, Dr. Gu, seems to be getting out of the single life soon."

"Is it true? Who could be worthy of our handsome and dashing Dr. Gu?" Nurse A said with a dreamy look, resting her chin on her hands.

"It's true. it's that Dr. Jiang who transferred from the external hospital a few days ago. She's very pretty."

Nurse B became increasingly enthusiastic as she spoke. "She's the daughter of the hospital director, highly educated, and if she didn't like Dr. Gu, I can't figure out why she would come to our department. The department she was in before had a handsome doctor, Dr. Pei, and he even had a better temper than Dr. Gu."

"Does Dr. Gu like her?" Nurse A asked in response.

"What else could it be? I even saw them having lunch together downstairs in the restaurant, just the two of them. When did Dr. Gu become so close to a girl?"

The two nurses were chatting excitedly, and Xu Weiyan was forced to listen to everything.

After finishing her infusion, Xu Weiyan rushed to the Night Bar. Her inflammation had improved, and the nurses had told her that she could start taking medication and didn't need any more injections.

She planned to find some extra work to do. Working at the Night Bar could help her make some extra money to cover her expenses. The job there didn't require high-level skills, and the pay was on a weekly basis. This way, she could practice at the theater during the day and work at the bar in the evenings.

Xu Weiyan had come into contact with electronic instruments, so it was no problem for her to play it with simple rock music.

As the elevator doors were about to close, Xu Weiyan quickly pressed the button, and the elevator doors opened slowly.

Xu Weiyan was stunned when she saw the person inside.

Gu Yu'an was with a female doctor. When he saw her, he didn't react much, and his expression seemed as if she were a stranger.

The female doctor was cheerful and, upon seeing her, called out with a smile, "Miss, come on in."

Xu Weiyan recovered and walked in quickly. She turned to the female doctor and said, "Thank you."

The elevator door closed and they went down.

Xu Weiyan leaned against the wall, her back to them, feeling surprisingly slow in the elevator.

"Yu'an, let me tell you, the patient today was so difficult to deal with. He insisted on removing his stitches early, claiming that he had fully recovered, but he was still limping. It's both frustrating and amusing," she said.

Gu Yu'an didn't respond, he just gave a slight smirk, going along with her conversation.

As soon as the elevator door opened, Xu Weiyan rushed out. She walked quickly and soon disappeared from the hall.

"Yu'an, is she a former patient of yours? I noticed you were staring at her the whole time in the elevator," Jiang Manyi asked, looking somewhat puzzled. She had observed that he had been focused on the young woman in the elevator earlier.

"Yes," Gu Yu'an said, retracting his gaze.

Jiang Manyi teased, "Well, that's quite heartless of her, not even a greeting to you."

"Indeed, quite heartless," he replied.

The Night Bar, the bar manager, was giving a talking-to to the lead singer, Jiang Ziyu. It seemed to be about his lack of commitment and irregular attendance at rehearsals, being lazy.

Jiang Ziyu had short, tousled, brown curls, and his overall appearance looked lazy, as if he had just woken up. It wasn't clear if he was really paying attention to what the manager was saying; he occasionally nodded along.

"Are you even listening to what I'm saying? Did your mom send you here to sleep all day?" The manager had a frustrated expression. Jiang Ziyu had originally joined as a trainee, but after a few days of hard work, he had returned from the company. His family had left him at his uncle's bar, telling him to find something to do.

Jiang Ziyu had a beautiful voice and good looks, which had made him somewhat popular at the bar. Videos of his singing were often shared online, gaining him a small fan following.

When Xu Weiyan arrived, she saw a young man being scolded like a child by a middle-aged man.

She hesitated whether to go up and interrupt them. The interview time mentioned in the notification was only a couple of minutes away.

It was daytime, and there were not many people in the bar. Her thin figure was particularly eye-catching. When Jiang Ziyu saw her, his eyes lit up. He interrupted his uncle and said, "Uncle, look if the girl is here for you. Go and ask her." He pointed at Xu Weiyan and then ran away while his uncle, Wang Fu, was looking at her.

Wang Fu realized and shot a stern glance at Jiang Ziyu's retreating figure. Then, he looked kindly at Xu Weiyan and asked, "Are you the girl who scheduled an interview with us online?"

"Yes." Xu Weiyan nodded.

Wang Fu looked her up and down, and then nodded with satisfaction. "You look good."

Since she was going to show up on the stage, she had to make the guests happy with her appearance, which was more important than performance skills. Wang Fu didn't even let her go up to perform, and it was settled soon. Xu Weiyan was a little surprised.

"Let's give it a try for a week. The home team and the guitarist are rehearsing in the lounge. You can go and join them in practicing. The first show is tonight at 8 o'clock."

Night Bar was usually divided into three rounds. The first round was also a warm-up, held at eight o'clock, every two hours. The first two rounds were mixed with all kinds of songs, and Xu Weiyan was needed. The last round was purely rock music. This means that Xuwai Yan only needs to work until 10 o'clock.

As she entered the rest area of Night Bar for the first time, she felt a bit uncomfortable. The room was relatively small, without windows, and the air was stagnant. Upon entering, she was greeted by a mixture of cold air conditioning and the smell of smoke, making her scrunch up her nose in discomfort.

A blond young man noticed the girl's arrival and was the first to stub out his cigarette. Then he cleared his throat a few times, hinting to the others.

The previously chatty group fell silent instantly, with all their eyes fixed on Xu Weiyan, making her feel quite uncomfortable.

"Hello, I'm the new keyboardist," she said in a gentle, somewhat reserved voice.

"Shall we play some music together?"

"Oops... Oh, oh, come on, what are you waiting for? The beautiful lady has spoken, why are we just standing around?" The blond guy raised his voice a few notches upon seeing the pretty girl, and the others followed suit, preparing for the rehearsal.

Only the young man lying on the bench sleeping with a hat in his hand did not make a move.

The blond guy rushed over and patted him on the back. "Jiang Ziyu, a beautiful girl has arrived, our bar's first female musician."

The straightforward words made Xu Weiyan a little uncomfortable, and she averted her gaze.

"Why all the noise? So annoying," the young man said impatiently. He sat up, picked up his hat from the floor, and put it on. He gave Xu Weiyan an impatient look, then got up and walked out of the room.

Xu Weiyan recognized him at a glance. He was the man who had been scolded just now. She couldn't help looking out of the door.

The bar's marquee lit up, and the colorful lights illuminated the lively night. Xu Weiyan applied light makeup and sat quietly in her place, unlike the other musicians who were more boisterous. Additionally, the spotlight was mainly on the lead singer, so she remained inconspicuous, making it a peaceful night for her.

"Hey, Weiyan, we haven't had a proper outing since you came back. How about going on a road trip tomorrow?" Su Nian lounged on the couch, speaking to Xu Weiyan, who was diligently practicing with her sheet music.

Xu Weiyan stopped what she was doing and looked at her. "Road trip? I think you might be more interested in taking me for a spin around the big roads."

Su Nian grinned. It wasn't awkward to be exposed. She had just gotten her new car and got her driver's license, so she wanted to find a place to practice.

"Then are you going to accompany me?"

Xu Weiyan, holding her sheet music with a headache, told her, "I'm going to participate in a very important performance soon, and if I can't pass it smoothly, I might lose my job."

The one-month deadline was coming soon. She spent most of the night in the Internet cafe and didn't have much time to practice.

"Really? With your abilities, it should be a piece of cake, shouldn't it?" Su Nian was somewhat surprised, as Xu Weiyan was quite famous during her university days, regarded as an excellent student by her professors.

She doesn't understand music, so she thinks Xu Weiyan must be great, right?

Xu Weiyan smiled bitterly and said, "Don't paint me a cake. Find someone else."

Su Nian was getting anxious, "No!"

"This is very meaningful. It's my first time driving." For Su Nian, this was something worth remembering. She didn't want to be with someone she wasn't familiar with.

Xu Weiyan looked at her helplessly.

"Please accompany me, Weiyan. We'll go there tonight, okay? I won't take up your time."

“...”

Seeing her pleading expression, Xu Weiyan finally softened her heart and agreed.
