Chapter 5 An Arrogant Child

The next day, at around 9 o'clock in the evening, Xu Weiyan sat in the somewhat unstable car driven by Su Nian, and the two of them headed towards the countryside.

"Weiyan, let me tell you, there are fewer people and fewer cars in the outskirts of the city. It's the best place for driving practice," she said, raising her eyebrows at Xu Weiyan. Xu Weiyan looked ahead and replied, "It's good, but there are also fewer street lights, and it's hard to see anything in the distance."

Su Nian drove so fast that Xu Weiyan felt like she was on a roller coaster.

Suddenly, Xu Weiyan seemed to hear the sound of a motorcycle speeding on the expressway. She felt nervous and urged Su Nian to focus on driving, not saying another word to her.

Su Nian even turned to look at her. "It's okay. I think I'm quite talented at driving. No..."

"Nikki!" Xu Weiyan pointed ahead and shouted, but it was too late. Su Nian's car collided with the motorcycle that was speeding past. The motorcycle owner reacted quickly and quickly reversed the front of the motorcycle, but it still made a lot of sparks.

The car came to a sudden stop. Su Nian pressed her chest in shock and asked in disbelief, "Did I hit someone?"

Xu Weiyan unfastened her seatbelt and got out of the car to check.

In the Chenyang Hospital, Su Nian leaned against Xu Weiyan uneasily. In the brightly lit emergency room, the man's wails could be heard.

After a while, a nurse carrying a bloodstained device came out. She glanced at them and called them in.

The young man sitting on the hospital bed glanced at them and then said to the doctor, "Doctor, you must provide me with a medical certificate. I need to report this deliberate hit-and-run incident."

"What 'deliberate mischief'?" Su Nian's initial guilt suddenly turned to anger. Where did this little brat come up with such an unjust accusation?

"Then why did you drive around in the suburbs at night? Your driving skills are so poor. It's just blackmail."

Su Nian was at a loss for words, about to say something, when Xu Weiyan reached out and patted her on the back, signaling that they were indeed in the wrong.

"Alright, alright. You guys settle it privately first. I still have a few patients to take care of, so I'll be leaving first." Pei Wenxuan was used to this kind of thing, so he wasn't surprised.

The young man became anxious, "Doctor, are you just going to ignore me? I've got a fracture, you know?"

"I just helped set your fracture, didn't I? Next, you'll need some medicine to promote circulation and a few alcohol swabs to disinfect the broken skin," the doctor replied.

Pei Wenxuan wrote down the names of the medicines on a piece of paper and tore it off, handing it to Xu Weiyan, who appeared to be in the best condition at the moment.

Xu Weiyan examined the prescription closely, but she couldn't make sense of it. She wondered why this person's handwriting was even more difficult to decipher than Gu Yu'an's. Were all doctors like this?

"Jiang...Ziyu, I'm sorry, I'll go get your medication now," Xu Weiyan said.

Speaking of this, Xu Weiyan was a little embarrassed. She didn't expect to meet someone she knew this time. She had only talked to Jiang Ziyu a few times, and it was indeed difficult to explain it to him in private because of such a thing.

Jiang Ziyu glanced at her and ignored her.

Xu Weiyan patted Su Nian on the shoulder to calm her temper, and then left with concern.

The pharmacy was located in a large house on the first floor. Xu Weiyan had to ask several nurses along the way to find it.

When she took out the medicine, a gust of cold wind blew over, and the long branches swayed a little in the wind. Xu Weiyan couldn't help speeding up and going back the way she came.

However, when she reached a crossroads, she suddenly felt confused. Both roads seemed incredibly familiar, as if she had walked down both of them before. For a moment, she hesitated, then Xu Weiyan followed her intuition and chose one of the paths.

Walking to the end of the lush grassy path, Xu Weiyan suddenly realized something was amiss. The fountain and the intricately sculpted plants – this was probably the hospital's garden.

Xu Weiyan was about to find a doctor nearby to ask for directions when she suddenly stopped in her tracks.

Under the dim streetlights, the man's silhouette appeared even lonelier. He was hunched over, sitting on a wooden bench, with a cigarette in his hand, emitting a cloud of white smoke. He looked utterly dispirited.

This was a side of Gu Yu'an that Xu Weiyan hadn't seen before, and for a moment, it left her feeling a bit bewildered.

She didn't move for a long time.

Gu Yu'an crushed the half-smoked cigarette, feeling as if it lacked any satisfaction. He tossed it on the ground, stomped it out, then picked it up and discarded it in a nearby trash can. He stood up and slowly walked towards the other side of the path, not even noticing the presence of another person in the garden.

Xu Weiyan realized that Gu Yu'an must have encountered something very unpleasant to appear so disheartened. However, he was skilled at dealing with bad moods, and usually, he would bounce back after some time on his own.

In simple terms, they both liked to keep their emotions to themselves. Several of the rare arguments they had during their university days were mostly due to this underlying issue.

Xu Weiyan wasn't sure how she had ultimately found her way out, but she followed the path and eventually found her way back.

She didn't rush to the emergency room but instead took the elevator to the twelfth floor, to the orthopedic department.

Though it was the middle of the night, the doctors and nurses appeared quite busy. Xu Weiyan interrupted a nurse who was busy with paperwork and asked, "Hello, is Dr. Gu available?"

The nurse looked up and gave her a once-over, as if recognizing her. "You're the young lady who was receiving an IV in Dr. Gu's office before, right?"

That did leave quite an impression on her.

"Dr. Gu should be in the operating room on the seventh floor right now, but his mood isn't great," the nurse said in a somewhat cryptic manner.

For doctors, both success and failure in surgery are normal occurrences, but when it involves a prestigious doctor like Dr. Gu, it seems abnormal. People naturally expect him not to fail.

Xu Weiyan tightened her grip on the bag and then reached into her coat pocket, pulling out a long piece of candy. She offered it to the nurse, saying, "Could you please give this to him for me?"

The nurse was stunned for a moment, as if she didn't expect that the little girl would take out this thing and give it to the doctor. After a while, she took it and said, "Then I..."

"No need," Xu Weiyan interrupted her with a hand gesture. "Just tell him it's a gift from a patient he treated in the past."

Time passed quickly, and Su Nian had no interest in the young man in front of her, even if he was handsome. She leaned against the window, looking around anxiously as Xu Weiyan hadn't returned for a while, making her somewhat worried.

"Hey, maybe she's already gone back to sleep. Don't look around." Jiang Ziyu lay on the hospital bed with his injured arm crossed, looking very happy.

It was not hard for Su Nian to treat him as a kid. Jiang Ziyu was a few years younger than them, and he looked to be in his early twenties. He was very arrogant and his words were harsh.

Su Nian rolled his eyes at him.

Upon entering the room, Xu Weiyan was met with this scene, indicating that the two of them hadn't reconciled yet.

Su Nian saw her immediately come over to help carry her things and couldn't resist taunting Jiang Ziyu, "Kid, did you see that? This is called friendship."

Jiang Ziyu snorted.

"Jiang Ziyu, do you want me to call your uncle and let him know what happened? It's not good for you to be here alone," Xu Weiyan asked him.

"What's the big deal? I'm already an adult. Why do I need my parents for such a minor thing? You can stay and take care of me, that's enough. I'm telling you, I'll be staying in the hospital for a couple of days."

"Are you... are you suggesting that we're here to look after you in your old age?" Su Nian retorted.

"Is it not okay? Then I'll just call the police," Jiang Ziyu said, reaching for his phone.

Su Nian became anxious. Her newly purchased car – if her parents found out, it would be a disaster.

"Don't. Can't we take care of you? Kids should be sensible," she coaxed Jiang Ziyu, making Xu Weiyan chuckle.

Early the next morning, Xu Weiyan accompanied Su Nian to buy breakfast and then headed to the theater, leaving Su Nian to take care of Jiang Ziyu.

The large-scale performance was co-organized by Yuncheng City's biggest theater and their own theater, serving as a cultural exchange event. The main theater had sent some outstanding musicians to collaborate, guide, and mentor their own team. Xu Weiyan considered this to be a valuable opportunity.

"Here you are, Weiyan." The director shouted when he saw her. He happened to be in the middle of discussing with the visiting pianist from the other theater.

The pianist from the other theater was a young woman of roughly the same age as Xu Weiyan. The director thought they might have a lot to discuss, so he willingly gave them the opportunity to engage in conversation.

"This is Ji Qiu. This is...."

"Director, there's no need for introductions. Weiyan and I already know each other," Ji Qiu smiled, revealing her red lips and white teeth.

"We were in the same school, the same year."

Upon learning this, the director nodded in slight surprise, saying, "No wonder you're both so outstanding."

Xu Weiyan hadn't seen her former classmate for a long time and hadn't recognized her right away. However, Ji Qiu's style hadn't changed much – she had always been quite stunning.

"Weiyan, it's been so many years. Our classmates all thought you had gone to the national grand theater. We didn't expect to run into you here," Ji Qiu chatted with her. She had her hands crossed in front of her, and in comparison, Xu Weiyan, carrying her cello, appeared somewhat disheveled with a slightly curved back.

Xu Weiyan didn't mind and took a seat, looking at Ji Qiu. "Isn't it about the guidance work? Come on."

Ji Qiu paused for a moment and joked, "How can I guide you? We both graduated from the same university, and our skills are similar."

While our skills might be similar, we do work in quite different places.

Xu Weiyan continued to overlook the underlying meaning in her words. She offered a faint smile. Perhaps, for her, these matters were less important than the cello.

After the morning's activities had concluded, Xu Weiyan received a call from Su Nian to deliver food to Jiang Ziyu. Su Nian was working late at the office and couldn't make it.

When Xu Weiyan arrived at the ward carrying the takeout containers of food, Pei Wenxuan was in the midst of advising Jiang Ziyu in a friendly manner, saying, "Young man, there's really no need for you to stay in the hospital. Leave the hospital bed for those who truly need it."

"I'm doing this to teach the person responsible a lesson – don't drive recklessly at night." In reality, Jiang Ziyu was just looking for an excuse not to go to his uncle's place. He didn't want to be supervised.

"If you want compensation, you can just file a claim directly instead of wasting time here," Pei Wenxuan advised.

Xu Weiyan:"..." She thought to herself, "Is this how doctors usually act?"

"Ah, you're here." Pei Wenxuan noticed her and said, "I'll leave. Try to persuade him not to occupy a bed in our hospital. Just get out."

Xu Weiyan put the lunch box on the table. Jiang Ziyu was starving. He got up from the bed and began to eat. It felt good to be served, and the meal could be served easily.

"After you finish eating, can you be discharged?" Xu Weiyan asked him.

"No," Jiang Ziyu said directly, and his mouth was stuffed with food.

"Jiang Ziyu, being willful is one thing, but you should also consider that there are many others waiting for a hospital bed. Some of them are in much worse condition than you, and they don't act like you," she admonished.

Jiang Ziyu stopped and said, "It's none of your business."

He scolded her like an elder. Who did he think he was?

Xu Weiyan was speechless. This man was really childish.

She lowered her head to clean up the garbage and ignored him.

After Jiang Ziyu finished his meal, she packed up and was about to leave with the trash.

"Well..." Jiang Ziyu felt uncomfortable all over.

"I can leave, but you have to take care of me. I haven't fully recovered yet."

Xu Weiyan looked at him.

"Help me up," Jiang Ziyu said. Xu Weiyan understood and immediately used her free hand to help him up. She wasn't sure if Jiang Ziyu was doing it intentionally, but most of his weight seemed to be on her side. Her other hand was still carrying the trash, making it quite challenging.

When Gu Yu'an arrived at this room following the information provided by Pei Wenxuan, he was met with this scene. The young girl was hunched over, her face crumpled, while the blond young man was smiling slyly.

Gu Yu'an knocked on the door, and both of them immediately released their grip when they noticed him.

"Jiang Ziyu?" he asked, holding the clipboard in his hand.

Jiang Ziyu did not answer but asked, "Who are you? Where's that Dr. Pei? He's my doctor in charge."

Gu Yu'an didn't respond. How should he explain the situation? Should he say that Pei Wenxuan had willingly incurred a favor by helping him with dinner plans with his crush, and that's why he was helping with the room check?

"You should be discharged," Gu Yu'an said succinctly.

"I'm in the process of leaving," Jiang Ziyu replied, giving Gu Yu'an a sidelong glance. He then continued to ask Xu Weiyan for help to stand up.

Xu Weiyan didn't budge, as if she had already figured out that Jiang Ziyu was playing a mischievous prank.
