Chapter 5 Heartbeat

Mu Jingpei said, "You are wrong."

"Impossible!" Wen Qiu was very sure on the phone. "Hey, Jingpei, where did this woman come from? Did you kidnap the village belle? Or did you meet a woman on the road? Why are you so popular with women? If I had known earlier, I would have left with you later-"

"I'm hanging up." Mu Jingpei was annoyed with him.

"Hey! Don't!"

Mu Jingpei hung up the phone directly, and his world was quiet finally.

He glanced at Aixi in the rearview mirror and found that she was looking at him worriedly.

"What if the rain gets heavier? The soil here is loose, and it's easy to get landslide. It's very dangerous on the road."

Her eyes were clear, her face was clean, and her facial features were exquisite.

He couldn't remember what the village flowers in Hongfeng Village looked like, but if the little girl was nutritious, she would definitely be much more beautiful than the village flowers when she grew up.

He said indifferently, "It may not be too serious."

Not long after, Mu Jingpei was slapped in the face.

The rain became heavier and heavier, hitting the car and making people panic. The water on the windshield gurgled down, and the wiper could hardly wash it.

"It's raining heavily, Mu Jingpei," Aixi said, her voice laced with unease.

"I know." Mu Jingpei felt a sharp pain in his face.

"It's not safe to drive in such heavy rain." Ever since it rained, Aixi had been worried.

Mu Jingpei noticed that Aixi looked a little pale.

How could she be so scared in the heavy rain.

Of course, he knew that it was very dangerous to drive in a strange mountainous area on a rainy day, but there were no villages or shops here, and mountains were around them. It was also very dangerous to stop.

Mu Jingpei had no choice but to continue driving to his destination. He remembered what the girls in Hongfeng Village had said before he left. It was really raining.

It was really weird.

Why was he so unlucky.

"Why don't we turn back?" Aixi suggested.

Mu Jingpei raised his eyebrows and teased her. "I can send you back by the way?"

Aixi didn't answer him and reminded him, "Then drive slowly."

Just as Mu Jingpei was about to say "I know", he suddenly thought of something. He curled his lips and threatened her, "Baby, I'm not good at driving. It's very dangerous to take my car. Why don't you consider going back?"

Aixi heard him call her "Baby" for the first time, and she felt that it was not proper. However, his deep voice was pleasant to the ear.

Her heart trembled along with the last syllable, shaking off the lingering fear. She blushed and was a little embarrassed to look at him. After a few seconds, she whispered, "I'm not going back!"

**

There were fallen leaves along the way, which showed how heavy the rain was. Water vapor filled the air. They couldn't see clearly. The black off-road vehicle was driving on an invisible road.

Finally, Mu Jingpei saw another car.

A bus was in front of him, which was usually used to travel back and forth between the towns.

The road here was very narrow. Mu Jingpei drove the car to the side, and the wheels were pressed into the mud. There was a slope next to it, and there was a field below.

The two cars could barely pass. When they met, Mu Jingpei looked around and found that there were many people sitting in the opposite bus.

"Can this car go to Hongfeng Village?" he asked.

Hongfeng Village was located in a remote area, so this kind of bus could not get there.

Aixi replied, "It will take more than an hour to walk after getting out of the bus." Before she could finish her words, she realized that Mu Jingpei wanted her to go back again, so she puffed up her cheeks and stopped talking.

All of a sudden, there was a loud noise behind the car.

She was shocked and turned round, only to see that the bus that had just passed by had stopped.

Mu Jingpei saw the whole process through the rearview mirror outside the car. There was a landslide behind, and a big stone rolled down and hit the front of the bus.

Someone was screaming.

Mu Jingpei and Aixi both realized that something had gone wrong.

He couldn't ignore. Mu Jingpei parked the car by the side of the road, took an umbrella, and got out.

Aixi followed him. She didn't have an umbrella, and her clothes were instantly soaked.

Out of the corner of his eye, Mu Jingpei pull her under the umbrella. "You like to get wet in the rain?"

Aixi shook her head.

The space under the umbrella was limited, and there was still some distance between them. Aixi was still half-naked outside the umbrella. Mu Jingpei simply took her arm to get closer and took her towards the bus.

Aixi was almost completely held in his arms, and her arms could feel the heat coming from his body. The pleasant smell of his body temporarily dispelled her uneasiness.

The front of the bus was flattened, and there was collapsed mud, stones, and trees in front of it, which blocked the road.

Through the window, they could see that the bus was in chaos, full of children's cries and adults' screams. The window on the side of the driver's seat was broken, and the driver fell on the steering wheel, with blood on his face. There should be a stone rolling in and hitting the driver's head.

The passengers were all the middle age and old women, and some of them were even holding children. Everyone's face was full of panic. The person leaning against the window kept saying something in dialect. Although Mu Jingpei couldn't understand it, he could feel that she was calling for help.

Mu Jingpei said to Aixi, "Ask them to open the door."

It took a long time for the person inside to open the bus' door. Someone immediately got out of the car and ran back into the rain.

Mu Jingpei got in the car and took a look. The driver had been dragged out of the driver's seat to stop the bleeding, but he was still unconscious and needed to be sent to the hospital immediately.

"Does anyone of you can drive?" Mu Jingpei asked.

The people in the car shook heads and replied to him in dialect. Most people could only speak dialect.

Aixi translated, "Nobody. What should we do?"

It was very dangerous to park the bus here. The mountains next to it might continue to collapse. It was raining heavily outside. There was no signal on the phone, so they couldn't call for help. There were more than a dozen women and children in the bus, and the injured driver needed treatment. They couldn't leave these people alone.

Mu Jingpei didn't hesitate for a moment. "Ask them how far the nearest village is and where it is."

Aixi translated, "It's about three or four kilometers. Go back along this road, cross the bridge, and walk for a while."

Mu Jingpei replied with a "hmm". Now he could only drive the bus to send these people to a safe place, send the driver to the treatment, and then come back to drive his own car.

There was a place not far behind whhere he could reverse.

He said, "Calm them down and tell them not to get out of the car and run around. I'll move my car away."

From the beginning to the end, Mu Jingpei had been calm, giving Aixi a very reassuring and reliable feeling.

She knew that he had been looking for an opportunity to leave her behind. At noon in the restaurant, he almost left. Fortunately, he came back again. Now was the best opportunity to leave her behind, but she knew that he would not leave a group of people behind.

"Okay." For some reason, her heart beat very fast.

After getting off the bus, Mu Jingpei rushed straight into the rain without holding an umbrella.

After moving the car away, he came back with his backpack and handed it to Aixi. "Take it."

His T-shirt had been wet, and his short black hair was also wet. He brushed the hair covering his forehead, and a drop of water splashed on the face of Aixi, which was a little cold but indescribably hot.

Then, regardless of the glass on the ground, he sat in the driver's seat, which was wet because of the rain.
