Chapter 18 The Instep

When they arrived at the shoe shop, Mu Jingpei asked the boss to help Aixi pick out shoes mainly for comfort.

Ever since she found out that he was unhappy, Aixi had been very obedient and quiet.

After the boss brought the shoes, she sat on a stool and took off her own shoes.

Mu Jingpei suddenly asked, "What's wrong with your foot?"

A few of her toes were red and blistered, especially her toes, which were broken.

Being stared at like this, Aixi retracted her feet in embarrassment and said, "My shoes are a little small."

Mu Jingpei said, "Wait for me." Then he left the shoe shop.

Aixi was a little confused. She didn't know what he was going to do. Subconsciously, she wanted to follow him, but she was still barefoot and he walked very fast.

She felt a little uneasy.

Was he going to abandon her again?

A few minutes later, Mu Jingpei came back.

Seeing that Aixi was obviously relieved, Mu Jingpei asked, "What are you nervous about?"

Aixi blinked and said, "I'm afraid you'll leave me behind."

Mu Jingpei felt as if he had seen a small animal that was afraid of being abandoned by its master.

How insecure she was.

His heart softened, and the displeasure in his heart dissipated. He even blamed himself.

She didn't feel safe because he had tried to abandon her again and again before.

"I've said that I would take you with me. I won't go back on my word." Mu Jingpei told her seriously again, "If you're still worried next time, you can follow me closely."

Aixi bent her eyes and smiled. "Ok!"

Her feet were worn out, but she was still smiling. Mu Jingpei wondered if she didn't know the pain.

He squatted down in front of her.

Before Aixi could react, he grabbed her ankle. His hands were very warm and itchy. The part he had touched was itchy, which made her want to take back her feet.

Mu Jingpei reminded her, "Don't move."

He frowned slightly from the beginning.

Aixi endured the itch and stopped moving. Then, he held her full foot.

Aixi had small feet, and the skin on the instep was white and transparent. Blue blood vessels could be seen, but there were also many scars.

The man's well-defined fingers covered the girl's soft instep, and his fingertips were pressed against her delicate skin.

Mu Jingpei lowered his head, and Aixi could not see his expression. She only felt that his palm was a little hot, getting hotter and hotter, which made her face hot as well. She was very embarrassed.

It was not until her round and lovely toes curled up uneasily that Mu Jingpei came to his senses. Only then did he realize that he had been staring at her feet for a long time.

He looked away and took out a bottle of ophifu and a band-aid from the pharmacy next door. He tore open the packaging and asked, "Why didn't you say that the shoes don't fit?"

"I'm used to it."

Mu Jingpei paused and asked, "How did you get used to it?"

"My uncle and aunt won't buy me new shoes. I can only wear my cousin's shoes that he doesn't wear. But they're too big, and it's easy for me to fall when I walk. In fact, I am lucky. There's a little brother in our village wearing sandals in winter. I'll send him the shoes that I really can't wear."

Aixi's tone was relaxed, and her voice was crisp, as if she was telling a story that had nothing to do with her. But Mu Jingpei felt his heart sink as he listened.

He didn't have a hobby of collecting shoes, but he had a lot of signatures and limited edition shoes, many of which he had never worn before. As for Aixi, she could only wear shoes that others did not wear.

He realized that Aixi lived a life far beyond the imagination of a carefree person like him.

She couldn't get what he casually squandered even she tried her best.

The more he knew about her, the more distressed and pitiful he felt for her.

Mu Jingpei put a band-aid on her toes and said, "It won't happen again."

His slightly serious but not exaggerated tone made him look like a knight squatting in front of a suffering princess, making a promise that he would protect her in the rest of his life.

In the future, she would wear beautiful dresses and shoes that fit her.

She could eat whatever she wanted and get whatever she wanted.

She would never suffer again, never be bullied again.

Aixi had been careful because of the sudden unhappiness of Mu Jingpei. But when she suddenly heard these words, her heart ached and she was moved.

She quickly blinked her eyes to ease the soreness in her eyes so that she would not cry.

For a long time, no one was so nice to her.

Although he had always wanted to leave her behind, in the end, he didn't.

Although he always angered her and spoke frivolously, he would give her all the chicken soup to nourish her body, buy her suitable clothes and shoes.

"Why is Mu Jingpei so nice?"

How could she repay him.

The owner of the shoe shop called for a business. When he turned around, he saw Mu Jingpei getting up.

He came over and asked, "How are the shoes?"

Aixi nodded.

Mu Jingpei said, "this pair is Ok." There was no other choice in such a small town.

After paying the bill, the owner of the shoe shop couldn't help sighing to Aixi. "Little girl, your boyfriend is so nice to you."

Aixi suddenly blushed.

Why did the boss think that she had that kind of relationship with Mu Jingpei?

Before she could speak, she heard Mu Jingpei say, "We're not a couple."

The boss was stunned. "Brother and sister?"

Mu Jingpei replied with a "hmm" and didn't want to explain too much. Just let it be.

He smiled and said, "Let's go, sister."

Aixi felt inexplicably disappointed.

Watching them leave, the owner of the shoe shop tutted and said in an experienced tone, "Young people nowadays are not biological siblings, but they like to make ambiguous relationships like brother and sister. Who are you kidding."

After leaving the shoe shop, Mu Jingpei took Aixi to the supermarket to buy daily necessities and snacks.

There was only such a small supermarket in town, and the goods were placed densely on the shelves.

In addition to the necessities, Aixi only took a pen and a notebook.

"Let's buy some snacks. What do you like to eat?" Mu Jingpei asked.

Aixi refused. "I don't want snacks."

There was a look of longing in her eyes. She never ate snacks during the year she had lived with her uncle and aunt.

Mu Jingpei thought she was too cute and said with amusement, "Baby, you don't have to save money for me. I can afford snacks."

Aixi reminded him in a low voice, "My dad said that money should not be exposed. Be careful not to be targeted!"

If she hadn't been so frugal, he wouldn't have told her over and over again that he was rich.

Seeing that someone did notice them, Mu Jingpei didn't say anything more and simply helped her get snacks. He would help her take whatever she looked at. Sometimes, when he was not sure which one she was looking at, he would put several kinds in the shopping basket together.

Aixi saw that he had a lot of bags in his hands, potato chips and biscuits. She immediately said, "I can't finish them. I won't eat peanuts-flavored ones either."

Mu Jingpei kept sweeping the snacks and said in a helpless tone, "You don't take snacks, I help you."

Aixi was afraid of him, so she chose some of her favorite snacks.
