The moment Raegan heard that voice, the hatred she felt before her death in her previous life surged up, overwhelming her heart.
Emily wasn't Raegan's biological sister. She was the daughter of Raegan's uncle.
Years ago, Raegan's uncle had a severe gambling problem. When their grandfather couldn’t persuade him to stop, he decided to divide the family assets. It didn’t take long before Raegan’s uncle squandered everything and racked up a huge debt due to his gambling. While on the run from debt collectors, he got into a car accident, leaving behind his wife, Sophia, and their eighteen-year-old daughter, Emily.
Out of pity, Raegan’s father took them in, paid off their debts, and they have been living with their family ever since.
In her previous life, Raegan was utterly deceived by these two women. Not only did she support Sophia in becoming her stepmother, but she also treated Emily as her real sister, doing whatever they asked.
After her mother passed away, they sweet-talked Raegan into signing over her shares of the company. The two women took everything her mother had left her, and eventually...
Just thinking about it made Raegan’s eyes flash with cold determination, though she quickly hid it.
This time around, she wouldn’t allow them to harm her again.
She walked into the room, calmly said:
"Why no one call me for the family photo?"
In the living room, Raegan immediately spotted her father. Though fifty years old, he was successful and took great care of his health, evident in his fit physique. The years of business experience and the challenges he faced had given him a gentle and refined aura.
Sitting beside her father, ready to take a photo, was Sophia.
In her forties, Sophia was well-maintained, her full figure making it hard to believe she was a widow.
Emily too was decked up in high-end brands, which demonstrated how handsomely her father had spent on them.
Raegan’s appearance caused a momentary awkward silence in the previously cheerful living room. Emily glanced over, her eyes narrowing slightly.
Today, Raegan was wearing a red chiffon dress. The spaghetti straps revealed her delicate collarbone and long swan-like neck. With her refined face lightly made up, she looked far more elegant than the others.
However, Emily’s discomfort was fleeting. She quickly put on a broad smile and walked over to Raegan:
"Raegan, I thought you weren’t coming home today."
Raegan, seeing Emily’s attempt to act friendly, sidestepped her, coldly replying:
"You thought I wouldn’t come home? Did I ever say that?"
Emily was taken aback by Raegan’s response. Not only was Raegan dressed beautifully today, but her tone also seemed somewhat confrontational. She didn’t call her "sister" as she usually did. Instead, she addressed her by her name, Emily.
"Raegan, don’t misunderstand me. It’s just that in the past, I often asked you to come home to see uncle, but you always said you didn’t want to, so I assumed…"
"I was just busy before. I’ll be visiting my father more often from now on."
Raegan brushed past Emily and approached the sofa where her father and Sophia sat. Standing in front of Sophia, she calmly said:
"Auntie, could you please make some room? I'd like to sit with my father."
Sophia, accustomed to Raegan calling her "Mom", felt uneasy hearing her suddenly call her "Auntie". She awkwardly stood up:
"Raegan, it’s good you’re back. Samuel may not say it, but he’s been hoping you’d visit more often."
Raegan sat down beside her father, wrapping her arm around his. Ignoring Sophia, she affectionately said to her father:
"Dad, happy birthday! I wish you health, happiness, and joy every day."
After saying a long string of blessings, Raegan even leaned in to kiss her father on the cheek.
In her previous life, her father had been so angry with her for divorcing Mitchel Johnson that it triggered a heart attack in him.
Now, seeing her father sitting beside her, Raegan silently vowed to protect the two men she loved most in this life.
Raegan noticed her father's hand trembling as he reached for his suit pocket—a familiar gesture that alarmed her. Quickly, she took out his special medication from his pocket, poured out a pill, and fed it to him:
"Dad, are you okay? How do you feel?"
After Samuel Taylor swallowed the pill, he looked at his daughter's concerned face, his eyes welling with tears. He gently patted Raegan's hand:
"Don't worry, honey. I'm fine."
Hearing her father calling her "honey" after so long nearly brought tears to Raegan’s eyes.
Before she got married, her father had always called her "honey". But after he forced her to marry a man she initially didn’t want and continually tried to defy him, the endearing nickname became just "Raegan".
Eventually, when she divorced Mitchel Johnson, the father who had once doted on her angrily called her an ungrateful child…
It was clear how much she had worried and angered her father in her previous life.
Sophia handed over a glass of water, saying, "Samuel, have some water. You shouldn’t get so worked up just because Raegan came home. Remember your heart condition."
Emily chimed in, "Raegan, uncle has a heart condition. He can’t handle too much excitement."
Raegan took the glass from Sophia and helped her father drink, casting a glance at Emily:
"I was just wishing my dad a happy birthday. How is that too much excitement?"
Samuel Taylor chuckled as he held Raegan’s hand tightly, "I’m fine. I’m just too happy."
Emily couldn’t respond.
Soon, friends began arriving at the house. Raegan stayed by her father’s side, looking pure and beautiful. She was a far cry from the person she had been over the past year, and everyone couldn’t help but compliment her:
"It’s been a while since we last saw you, Raegan, and you’ve become even more beautiful!"
"Samuel, you’re so lucky to have such a beautiful and dutiful daughter."
"Samuel, you’d better keep an eye on her. You wouldn’t want some poor guy to steal her away and leave you with no one to cry to."
On the other side, Emily struggled to find an opportunity to join the conversation. Whenever she tried to approach, Raegan would ask her to fetch something—be it tissues or water—or have her escort guests inside, treating her like a mere servant.
Hearing the guests’ remarks, Emily finally saw an opening and interjected:
"Uncle, Raegan has already got married."
"Oh, really? Samuel, how could you bear to marry off such a beautiful daughter? Where’s your son-in-law? I don’t see him around."
Samuel Taylor’s face briefly showed an awkward expression. His precious daughter had been married for a year, yet she had never once come home with Mitchel.
