Richard's controlling behavior enraged me so much that I laughed. In a chilly tone, I asked, "Do you not remember what you said last night?"

"What did I say?"

He gazed at me calmly and composedly, displaying no signs of guilt. "I drank too much; I don't remember anything."

"You seemed pretty clear-headed last night," I remarked, giving him a dubious look.

"No idea. I blacked out."
