Vanessa regained her composure in a moment. She turned to Brianna with a request. “Brianna, I think I left my purse in the restaurant. Could you go and get it for me?”
Brianna wanted to continue provoking Sarah, but she decided to obediently follow Vanessa's request.
Vanessa looked at Sarah and said, “Thank you for taking care of Eric.”with a sweet smile. In saying this, Vanessa was essentially declaring that Eric belonged to her.
At the same time, Sarah found Vanessa’s words ironic. She thought to herself, She’s not Eric’s wife. I am.
Vanessa continued, “I was too headstrong before, having run off abroad after we had a fight. But Eric is so considerate—he waited for me to come back. So, I’ve decided that now is the perfect time to marry him.”
Vanessa kept talking, but she no longer had Sarah’s attention. The thought of Vanessa marrying Eric was causing Sarah immense pain. Hearing Vanessa’s words, Sarah nearly fainted. We haven’t even divorced yet, she thought, and he’s already planning to remarry!
Vanessa noticed that Sarah wasn’t listening and called out to her, “Sarah?”
Hearing her name, Sarah snapped back to reality.
“What is it, Ms. Greene?”
Thinking Sarah was no longer a threat, Vanessa felt a sense of satisfaction. Then She took out her phone and said, “Sarah, how about I add you on WhatsApp? Eric is so good to me. I thought I might surprise him every now and then, and you could help me with that.”
“I’ll take care of it.”
Sarah didn’t want Vanessa in her contacts, but seeing the eagerness in Vanessa’s expression, she gave in. As the sun was shining brightly outside, beads of sweat began to form on Vanessa’s forehead. Embarrassed, she turned to Sarah and asked, “Could you take me outside?”
Sarah nodded and tried to push the wheelchair, but it wouldn’t budge. She then bent down, holding the armrests, and checked if the wheels were stuck. But just as Sarah bent down, Vanessa forcefully pushed her arm away and sneered, “Did sleeping with my man for the past two years bring you joy?”
Sarah had a bad feeling that something terrible was about to happen, and at that moment, the wheelchair, which had been stuck, suddenly started moving on its own.
“Help!”
“Sarah!” Vanessa screamed Sarah’s name in terror as she lost her balance and fell backward.
Sarah’s pupils contracted as she reached out to catch Vanessa, but it was too late. With a dull thud, Vanessa fell heavily to the ground.
Just then, a familiar voice came from behind. “Vanessa!”
Before Sarah could figure out who it was, she was shoved aside. The force pushed Sarah into a nearby railing, causing pain in her knees and stomach.
“Eric, it hurts.” Vanessa sobbed weakly in Eric’s arms. Her forehead was smeared with blood, and her face was contorted in pain.
Eric frowned as he carefully examined Vanessa’s wounds. He looked extremely anxious. Throughout the entire process, he didn’t spare a single glance at Sarah, whom he had just pushed aside. This made Sarah’s heart ache and made it hard for her to breathe.
“Eric, I saw everything. This crazy woman pushed Vanessa!” Brianna, who had just come out, pointed accusingly at Sarah. In reality, Brianna hadn’t seen anything, but she blamed Sarah anyway because, to her, Sarah was nothing but a nuisance.
Eric turned to look at Sarah, his eyes filled with hostility. Eric’s gaze left Sarah momentarily stunned. Despite this, Sarah still held onto a sliver of hope that Eric might listen to her explanation.
“I didn’t—”
“That’s enough!” Eric cut her off mercilessly, his eyes blazing with anger. “If anything happens to Vanessa, I won’t let you get away with it.” He was convinced that Sarah was the culprit. The small glimmer of hope that had been in Sarah’s eyes vanished in an instant. Her heart felt as if it had been cruelly hooked and torn apart by a barbed wire, leaving her to bleed out. Sarah shivered uncontrollably, her body and soul now consumed by overwhelming pain.
Without looking back, Eric carried Vanessa into the car. Brianna followed, sneering at the sight of Sarah lying on the ground, as if Sarah were nothing more than a pitiful stray dog. “Eric is out of your league. Compared to Vanessa, you’re nothing.” Brianna’s words were harsh, but Sarah didn’t even register them. Instead, she just stared blankly at Eric’s retreating figure while feeling tense and lifeless, like a soulless robot.
The way Eric cared for Vanessa was something Sarah had never witnessed before. It was only now that she realized she had never truly entered Eric’s heart.
Then Eric started his black Bentley and kicked up a cloud of dust as he drove away. At that moment, a strange pain began to radiate from Sarah’s lower abdomen. She snapped back to reality, realizing what was happening. She clutched her stomach and whispered, “Baby…”
Just then, her phone rang. It was Chloe, calling to tell Sarah that she would need a bit more time to leave the parking garage. The constant pain in Sarah’s body made her extremely anxious. And since it was difficult to hail a taxi at the entrance, she didn’t know what to do.
Standing at the entrance of the high-end restaurant, Sarah tried to flag down Eric’s car, hoping he would take her to the hospital. But it drove right past her. She struggled to move, using all her strength to try and stop Eric’s car.
But Eric didn’t stop; instead, he sped onto the main road, leaving Sarah behind. She watched his car until it disappeared from sight. Her stomach ached as she clutched it, tears streaming down her face. “Baby, I’m so sorry.”
In the hospital room, a doctor was carefully examining Vanessa. Eric was outside in the hall on the phone. Sunlight streamed through the window, highlighting his handsome and chiseled features.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Taylor. I couldn’t find Mrs. Taylor. She may have already left,” Rachel admitted over the phone.
“All right.” After hanging up, Eric’s mind kept replaying the image of Sarah’s distressed and helpless face after she fell. He knew he had pushed her, but as far as he could remember, it wasn’t a hard push and shouldn’t have caused her any harm. So why was she acting like that? Eric thought that, since Rachel hadn’t found her yet, Sarah must be fine.
But for some reason, Eric couldn’t shake the feeling of unease. Sarah’s swollen, tear-filled eyes and tear-streaked face kept replaying in his mind.
If Sarah hurt Vanessa, he thought to himself, I shouldn’t have shown her any mercy. But Sarah had never done anything inappropriate. Even though we’re married, she never shirks her responsibilities at work. Maybe this really was just an accident.
But if this was just an accident, then what about Vanessa? His deep eyes gazed toward the hospital room, and although he didn’t realize it, something inside him had already begun to change.
Back in the hospital room, Tears were still streaming down Vanessa’s face. As she noticed Eric approaching, she reached out to hug him. Eric frowned slightly. Clearly, he didn’t want any intimate contact. But because Vanessa was injured, he didn’t push her away. “Are you feeling better?” he asked.
Although Eric’s concern was evident, Vanessa could still hear the coldness in his tone. “It doesn’t hurt as much now,” Vanessa said pitifully, looking up with tear-filled eyes.
“Vanessa, what exactly happened?” Eric’s tone seemed casual, but for some reason, his words sent a chill down her spine.
“Sarah didn’t do anything wrong. She was just trying to help by pushing my wheelchair. I think there must’ve been a problem with the wheelchair, which is why I fell. Eric, please don’t blame her, okay?” Vanessa explained, her voice filled with guilt.
Eric looked at Vanessa, and his eyes softened. He thought, I shouldn’t have doubted Vanessa like that. He then gently held her shoulders and quietly moved out of her grasp. “Get some rest.”
The light poured down, illuminating Eric’s face, making him look both handsome and dazzling. Vanessa was left reassured. But once Eric left, Vanessa’s innocent smile vanished, replaced by malice. She couldn’t believe Eric doubted her because of that wretch!
