Chapter 5 The Divorce Papers

Ethan took the document she handed him and flipped through it. When he saw the section on property division, he couldn’t help but let out a cold laugh.

“You’ve got quite an appetite, asking for half of my assets. Are you in your senses?”

“This is what I deserve. Why wouldn’t it be possible?”

Ethan chuckled lightly and said leisurely, "In the years we’ve been married, I’ve been covering your father’s medical bills. If we’re really going to calculate everything, you should be the one paying me. Do you want me to have my lawyer go over the numbers?"

Staring at his cutting demeanor, Evelyn found it hard to believe that she had ever loved this man.

“Ethan, don’t forget—if it weren’t for me giving you that patent, you wouldn’t be sitting securely as the CEO of Montgomery Group. And after we got married, you were the one who told me to stay home. If I had continued my research, I’d be making far more money than you’ve given me in the past few years!”

Back then, Evelyn had willingly given Ethan the patent for the drug she had developed, helping him solidify his career. She had trusted him unconditionally, and he had betrayed her.

Ethan was indifferent, his tone calm. “That patent—do you really think anyone would believe you now if you brought it up?”

“I don’t want to argue about money, but if you insist on divorcing, then we’ll have to settle it. Eve, as long as you stop talking about divorce, you can still use my money as you please.”

“Ethan, you’re absolutely shameless!”

Since he refused to divorce, she would have to hire a lawyer and file for divorce.

She turned to leave, but Ethan blocked her path.

“Go change your clothes. You’re coming with me to the family dinner.”

“I said I’m not going. Just tell them I’m not feeling well.”

Before she could finish her sentence, Ethan grabbed her wrist, his voice low and menacing.

“Eve, I’m running out of patience. Don’t force me to cut off your father’s medical expenses!”

“How dare you!”

Ethan immediately pulled out his phone and called his secretary. “Hello, I wanna talk about my father-in-law’s medical expenses for next month…”

She never expected him to actually do it. Evelyn’s eyes filled with rage as she snatched the phone from him and hung up.

“Ethan, don’t go too far.!”

“Too far?”

Ethan yanked her toward him, towering over her as he spoke. “Evelyn, everything you have now is given by me! Go change your clothes, or I have a hundred ways to make you comply.”

Seeing the coldness in his eyes, Evelyn only felt that she must have been blind to have ever fallen in love with a man like him. Her eyes stung, but she refused to show any vulnerability in front of him.

She forcefully shook off his hand, took a deep breath, and turned to walk upstairs. At that moment, she had only one thought in her mind—she needed to find a job as soon as possible so she could move out and figure out a way to divorce Ethan.

She picked up some clothes and dressed up before coming back downstairs.

Hearing footsteps, Ethan instinctively looked up. Evelyn was dressed in a simple white dress, her waist as slender as a willow branch, her long hair casually pinned up, revealing a delicate, fair neck. She was so beautiful that it was hard to look away.

Her gentle and serene aura was just the same as when they first met. But now, the way she looked at him was icy cold, devoid of the slightest warmth.

“Let’s go.”

On the way to the Montgomery family estate, the two of them remained silent.

When they arrived at the entrance of the Montgomery estate and were about to get out of the car, a black Range Rover roared in and screeched to a halt right in front of Ethan’s car.

Recognizing that it was Adrian’s car, Ethan’s expression darkened. Ethan both feared and disliked his uncle, wanting nothing to do with him. After all, Adrian had always been reckless, and Ethan couldn’t stand it.

Years ago, Charles had intended for Adrian to take over Montgomery Group, but Adrian outright refused and started his own business. Everyone had expected him to fail and return home to inherit Montgomery Group, but to their surprise, he succeeded. In less than five years, his company had expanded significantly, now likely worth five or six times Montgomery Group’s value.

Ethan’s dislike for Adrian was also tinged with jealousy and resentment. Moreover, Adrian held grudges—after hearing that Ethan had spoken ill of him, he had outright refused to collaborate with Montgomery Group, causing the company to lose billions.

Adrian rarely attended family gatherings, so Ethan hadn’t expected to run into him this time. But luck wasn’t on his side, and they encountered him right at the door.

In his foul mood, Ethan didn’t notice that beside him, Evelyn’s expression had gone stiff the moment she saw Adrian get out of the car.

Pushing open the car door, Ethan called out, “Uncle Adrian.”

Evelyn Moore stood frozen for a long time before she finally managed to force out a word, “Uncle…”

The moment she saw Adrian’s strikingly handsome face, a vivid flash of that passionate night surged through her mind!

That trembling sensation coursing through her body — she still couldn’t forget it, even now.
