Wesley hid his injury. When he was talking to others as if nothing had happened on the top of the mountain, Brian and Joanne were at their house in Prime Villas.
Gavin and Wendy had a successful wedding. It was the first day of the New Year. Joanne was in a particularly good mood and her steps were much lighter than usual.
When the sun began to set, Joanne handed her two kids to Martha and prepared dinner with Iris.
Iris was in charge of cooking the soup. When she was pouring the ingredients, she asked, "What is Brian doing?"
Joanne was putting seasoning in the pot as she answered casually, "He went to the study as soon as he came back. I don't know what he's doing."
"He's in the study again?" Iris, as a mother, could not help but complain. "Today is the first day of the new year. He should have no work. Why is he still in the study? If I had known that he liked the study so much, I would have asked him to marry to the study two years ago."
"Haha!"
Joanne could not help but laugh out loud.
However, what the old lady said made sense.
Brian obviously had no work today, so why did he still stay in the study?
Joanne put the last dish into the porcelain plate, wiped her hands, and said, "I'll go to the study to have a look!"
She ran to the second floor and pushed open the door of the study without knocking.
Brian was making a phone call. He seemed to have heard the sound of her opening the door. He subconsciously hid inside the study and turned his face to her.
This was a typical dodge, and he did it naturally.
Joanne swallowed the question she was about to ask while she froze.
She wondered if Brian was hiding something from her.
Joanne slowly closed the door and walked towards Brian. There was a hint of confusion in her voice. "Brian, who are you calling?"
Brian put down his phone and said, "Someone you don't know."
"I..."
Joanne still wanted to ask, but Iris's voice came from the first floor.
"Joanne, the soup is ready. It's time to eat."
Brian walked over and held Joanne's hand. "Let's go down for dinner."
Joanne thought for a moment. She decided to suppress the doubts in her heart first and followed Brian downstairs.
Iris specially prepared a lot of dishes for Brian and Joanne to eat. She did not forget to ask, "How is it?"
The old lady was skilled at cooking, and the dishes she made were comparable to those of a high-star hotel. Joanne felt strange when she suddenly asked this question.
While eating, Joanne pretended to ask casually, "Mom, do you have something to say to us?"
"You saw through it so quickly?" Iris put down her chopsticks and admitted frankly, "Yes, I do have something to tell you."
Joanne thought about it and had already guessed what Iris was going to say to them, but she patiently waited for Iris to continue.
Iris cleared her throat. "I said some time ago that I would move back to Orchid Gardens after the New Year. Do you still remember?"
"Yes, we do." Joanne nodded and then changed the topic. "But, mom, the New Year is not over yet."
Iris looked at the time and said, "According to my definition of the New Year, there are less than six hours left before it's over."
Joanne didn't say anything.
She felt helpless.
When she made a deal with the old lady, they should have made a pact on how long the New Year would be.
As expected, the old lady had beaten her.
Brian could see Joanne's helplessness. He covered her hand and motioned for her not to speak. He then looked at Iris and said, "Mom, during this period..."
Iris raised her hand and interrupted Brian. "I know that this period is very special, but you did promise me last year! You can't break your promise to me just because I am old."
Joanne was speechless.
However, judging from the old lady's attitude, she would not stay any longer.
Joanne could only give up and say, "Okay, mom."
After dinner, Brian went back to his study while Joanne and Iris went to accompany the two kids.
Since their birth, the kids had grown up a lot. The clothes they wore when they were born could no longer fit them. Their facial features looked more delicate and lovely.
Iris picked up Aiden. When she tapped the little fellow's chubby cheeks with her fingers, she couldn't help smiling.
Joanne held Romy in her arms.
Romy had always been more naughty than her brother. When she spoke in her mother's arms, her voice was vague and soft, which sounded like the sound of nature.
Before Joanne got married, she couldn't quite understand her mother's love for children.
Until she became the mother of these two little kids, she finally understood that there was really a kind of selfless love in the world, by which one could give anything for their child.
This must be maternal love.
Thinking of this, a gentle smile appeared on Joanne's lips, and she looked more and more gentle.
Not long after, Aiden fell asleep in Iris's arms.
Iris put the little fellow on the child's bed, waited for Romy to fall asleep, and then left the children's room with Joanne.
On the first day of the New Year, the atmosphere was the most lively, and fireworks were still blooming in the sky.
Iris looked at the wonderful night and sighed. "I don't know how Yuna is doing."
Ever since she came back, the old lady had been worried about Yuna.
She thought that if it weren't for Yuna, she might never get to come back.
At the mention of Yuna, Joanne's mood couldn't help but become heavy.
Unfortunately, she couldn't do anything about what Iris was worrying over.
Joanne could only comfort the old lady. "Brian and Wesley are working on it. Yuna will definitely come back."
Iris nodded. "I hope so."
After a pause, the old lady suddenly felt that something was wrong. "Why is Brian gone again? Usually at this time, shouldn't he be with Aiden and Romy?"
Joanne suddenly recalled that just now, when she pushed open the door of the study, Brian dodged instinctively.
Brian must be hiding something from her.
Joanne felt that she should get to the bottom of it.
However, she thought that it was not necessary to have the old lady know about this kind of thing for the time being.
"Well..." Joanne covered for Brian calmly. "Brian seems to have something to do at the last minute. He should be working on it in the study." After a pause, she added, "I'll make him a cup of coffee."
Iris helplessly waved her hand. "Okay then."
Joanne quickly made a cup of black coffee, brought it to the second floor, and knocked on the door of the study.
Brian's voice rang out immediately. "Come in."
Joanne pushed the door open and walked in, asking as naturally as possible, "What are you busy with?"
Brian vaguely guessed that Joanne had been suspicious.
No matter what excuse he made up, it was impossible for him to hide the truth from her.
In that case, it was better to tell her the truth.
Brian closed the laptop and looked at Joanne. "Come to me."
Joanne put the coffee on the table and went to Brian's side, waiting for him to speak.
Brian took Joanne's hand and said slowly after a while, "Something happened to Wesley."
Joanne was stunned and quickly reacted. She almost blurted out subconsciously, "What happened to Wesley?"
Brian told Joanne about Rowdy's every move that day. He tried to make it as easy as possible so as not to describe the matter so thrillingly.
Even so, Joanne was still stunned.
After lunch, she already found it strange that Wesley left the hotel in a hurry. Later, Brian told her that Wesley just had something to deal with at the last minute.
She had never expected that the thing that Brian had mentioned was actually a matter of life and death.
Joanne felt as if she had been severely shocked by something. Her mind went blank for a while before she came to her senses. She hurriedly asked, "How is Wesley doing now?"
"He's dealing with Rowdy's men." Brian paused for a moment before continuing, "I don't know the result yet."
Joanne held Brian's hands even tighter, and there was a hint of pleading in her voice. "Brian, help him!"
Brian said, "Joanne, I've done what I can do."
Joanne hadn't reacted yet. "So?"
Brian knew that it would scare Joanne, but in this case, he could only tell her the truth. "So, what happens next is all up to Wesley. No one can help him."
Joanne did not know what to say.
Rowdy had sent his men to besiege Wesley. Brian had done everything he could. Whether Wesley could get out of danger depended on himself.
There seemed to be nothing wrong with the logic.
That was why Joanne was even more worried about Wesley.
Brian held Joanne in his arms and comforted her softly, "I believe in Wesley."
Joanne nodded. Her soft voice seemed to have been hit by something and became a little erratic. "I also believe in Wesley..."
Brian let go of Joanne, led her to sit down, and said, "Wait for the news with me."
Joanne seemed to have lost her soul. She felt empty inside. She sat down and didn't even know where to place her hands.
Wesley had long known that Rowdy would focus on dealing with him today.
However, for the sake of Yuna's safety, he didn't strengthen his defense, which meant that he was caught off guard.
What if Wesley couldn't deal with Rowdy's men? What would Yuna do if something bad happened?
Yuna was in a dangerous situation. If something happened to Wesley, who could save her?
Brian saw that Joanne was nervous. He grabbed her hand and held it tightly in his palm. Because he was using too much strength, his knuckles turned slightly white.
Joanne looked at the cold look on Brian's face and suddenly realized that the most worried one right then must be him.
Brian and Wesley had known each other for so many years. When they encountered a dilemma, they would face it together.
But this time, Brian couldn't help Wesley even if he wanted to. He could only sit here and wait for the news.
He must be worried about Wesley's safety more than anyone else.
Thinking of this, Joanne held Brian's hand tightly and said, "Wesley is so powerful. Since he doesn't want you to help him, I believe he has a way to solve the crisis."
