Chapter 161 It Won't Last

It was in the president's office of Lambert Group in Arlington.

The time in the lower right corner of the computer read 23:07. Brian had finally finished today's work.

In order to save time before he married Joanne, he usually chose to stay at the company or go to a nearby apartment for one night.

Now, Joanne was gone and everything had returned to when it was before their marriage, but he wanted to go back to that home.

The room where he personally chose furniture and home textiles still had her breath. But he knew that it would not last long either, just like the fact that Joanne would leave him, these breaths would eventually dissipate one day.

Now, while he could still smell it, he wanted to go back.

Winston was driving quietly and wanted to say something for a few times, but he managed to swallow them back.

Brian did this for the sake of Joanne, and Winston knew that it would be useless for them to try to persuade him.

When it was nearly midnight, the black car stopped in front of the villa door. Brian pushed open the door into the house. The big house was quiet, although there were furniture and valuable decorations, he still felt empty.

The thick sense of tiredness came again. He went upstairs step by step, but he didn't go back to his own room, instead, he lay down on Joanne's bed.

Breathing her remnant breath, closing his eyes, he could lie to himself that Joanne was still here, was still by his side.

"Young Master." Simon opened the door and walked in. He put a pair of pajamas the bedside. "Take a bath and sleep." Do you want to eat something?"

"No need." He could not make out any flavor now if Joanne had not cooked the food. "How is she?"

"Just now, Chief Taylor phoned to say that Young Madam has arrived went at Sanqing Town. There was no progress in the case, but there was nothing unusual."

As long as she was fine.

Brian raised his arms and covered his eyes. "Simon, you can leave now."

"Sleep well." Simon silently exited the room and gently closed the door for Brian.

After a while, Brian lifted up his hand and got up. He picked up a photo frame on the bedside table.

In the photo frame was Joanne's photo. She took it on the day of her graduation. The tall and thin girl in the photo was wearing a black bachelor's suit and holding a bunch of delicate white roses in her arms.

Black and white, but the most beautiful thing was her face.

Brian touched her face with his fingertips and felt that his heart seemed to be caught by an invisible hand. The hand tightened and tightened, causing him to become more and more painful...

He did not know how it had been when the pain slowly disappeared, and then his heart became empty too, turning into a dark bottomless void.

Some people said one's entire world lay in their heart.

Now that Joanne was gone, his heart was empty too.

Later, Brian didn't know how he fell asleep, or if he had slept at all. The morning light passed through the beige curtains. He opened his eyes and got up, only to find his stomach aching.

The tingling sensation of the stomach was more serious when he had breakfast. Brian finally couldn't stand it and had Simon fetch the stomach medicine for him.

"It must have been because you didn't eat last night." Simon handed the stomach medicine together with a glass of warm boiled water to Brian. "You must have breakfast. Gavin said that you have engagement at noon."

Brian did have an engagement at noon and also met Steven the old fox.

Other people at the dinner table didn't know the true purpose of Joanne and Brian's marriage. They just envied Steven having such an excellent son-in-law like Brian. They naturally said nice things to Steven during the meal and said that Brian was such a great man.

Steven just smiled and waited until other people went out. Finally, he smiled and put down the teacup. "Brian, how come I heard that you quarreled with Joanne? Why? You should at least can last two years."

Brian smiled. "We are quarreling, and Joanne has proposed a divorce to me."

Steven never imagined that Brian would be so frank. After all, he was experienced in life. He knew that such confession was absolutely not normal. Looking at him carefully, as expected, Steven found Brian's smile as cold as the winter snow.

"But, Mr. Scott, if you think that when Joanne and I divorce, you can touch her, then you are wrong." Brian warned him word by word. "At any time, as long as you dare to move her, within a week, the Scott Group will disappear from this world."

Scott Group was Scott Family's business. It had been established in Arlington many years ago. Steven was also a sly character when he was young. During all those hardships, Scott Group survived and stood still. Now he was old, and he also admitted that no one could compete with Brian in today's business circle. However-

"Listen to yourself-" Steven raised the fragrance-smelling cup, and his movements and tone were all saying sarcasm. "Dont you think you sound exaggerating?"

Brian just said flatly, "You can try."

"..." Steven paused during his smelling session. Though on the surface, he concealed the shock very well.

He remembered that at the beginning, the Lambert Group was only a small company. At that time, Brian was still a student. He started the company in the United States, and it was a student entrepreneurship. No one at home and abroad noticed this small company.

It was not until the Lambert Group announced the establishment of the group headquarters in Arlington, until the Lambert Group' building was unveiled, until the capable Brian returned with a powerful team, did the older generation said that here came Arlington's new era.

Then it really came. Brian used his strong wrist and decisive style, as well as precise eyesight, to expand Lambert Group' territory in a few years. It took him only ten years to make Lambert Group a young but strong company. The company dominated the economic lifeline of half of Asia, and was welcomed by passionate young people.

Brian did not only had the ability, he was also an outstanding leader because the vigor in Lambert Group was better than any company's, and every employee was willing to contribute to the company.

Some said that if Brian wanted to do something, he would finally succeed at it. Nothing was impossible with him.

If he said that he wanted the Scott Group to disappear within a week, he could really do it.

Steven put down the fragrance-smell cup and smiled. "Brian, I don't mean to be an enemy of you, but you can't stop me from what I want to do."

"That depends on what you want to do." Brian said, "As long as it has anything to do with Joanne, I will not stand by."

At this time, other people came back. Steven put on the kindly smile that an elder should have, and Brian also die down his aura, and did not let others see anything wrong with them.

After they finished the meal, Brian went on Gavin's car. Gavin handed him the stomach medicine and a bottle of mineral water. "If you're not feeling well, go home and rest for the rest of the day."

Go home?

Before Joanne left, that place could still be called a home. But if he went back now, he could only feel a sense of emptiness.

"No need." After taking the medicine, Brian rubbed the temple. "Go to the company."

Gavin sighed, started the car and drove to the company.

He really wanted Joanne to look at Brian like this and see if she would feel bad. But then again, what happened to the girl in that remote town?

Joanne was very busy, so busy that she was nearly falling apart.

In the murder cases of girls in the town, they could not identify the murderer. He kidnapped 16 of 17 girls to the mountain, raped them and killed them. The found body all had marks of abuse.

For the first time in a peaceful town, such bad cases took place. The family that had daughters were afraid. The families of the victim girls were grief-stricken. They went to the police station to make a scene and asked the police to find out the murderer.

Some family members posted the case on the Internet and cruelly attacked the local police, and thousands of Internet users followed to criticize the relevant departments. The town police station and the city bureau were facing unprecedented pressure.

Captain Turner and Joanne were also much stressed. The equipment of the township police station was very outdated and there was no monitoring information. The local residents were not willing to cooperate with the investigation in order not to get into trouble. They could only try to find clues in ways used by those detectives in ancient times. Thus, they found it very hard to carry out the investigation.

But such hard work did not completely come without benefits. Joanne finally had no time to think about Brian.

Poor working condition and high-intensity work wore her out. After work, she was feeling completely exhausted. The moment she hit the pillow, she fell asleep. Although Brian would intrude into her dream, although her empty heart made her want to cry the next morning when she woke up, at least, she could sleep now.

On this day, she received a phone call from Chris after work.

Chris may have heard something from someone so he asked her, "Joanne, what happened to you and Brian?"

"Brother, I am sorry..." Joanne apologized to Chris in a low voice. "I have... proposed a divorce to Brian..."

Things happened too fast, and... If there was no reason, Joanne would not propose a divorce Brian so easily.

"Joanne, what on earth had happened? Tell me." He tried to coax the reason out of her.

Joanne looked down. After a long while, he told Chris every detail, including how strange Brian had become a few days ago.

These days, she had been kept those things to herself and felt suffocating.

After listening to her words, Chris only felt ridiculous. "Brian suspects that you love Shawn? Everyone says that he has sharp eyes, but in my opinion, I think he's short-sighted. You've loved him for so many years and lived with him for half a year, can't he feel anything?"

"I do not know." Joanne closed his eyes. "Brother, I know that you have done a lot for me to marry Brian. Sorry, we just can't continue."

"When will you finish your work there?" Chris asked.

"The case is very tricky, and we are not sure when we will crack it." Joanne said, "Maybe a week, or maybe we have to stay here for more than half a month."

"Take your time." Chris comforted his sister. "Let me handle Brian, I will take care of it for you."

"Brother!" Joanne yelled at Chris. "Don't tell him." There's no need to. He told me to leave that day and he just didn't want to live with me anymore. So forget it, we'd better get a divorce."

"I know what to do." Chris said, "It's not early, and you still have work tomorrow. Sleep well."

"Ah, you too."

Joanne hung up the phone and watched the phone return to the main screen. She couldn't help but tap on Brian's profile.

In the end, she still did not dial the number.

It was meaningless, and there was no need to contact him.

Chris, far away from Joanne in Arlington, also fumbled with his cellphone, thinking about whether he should visit Brian or not.

Joanne said that Brian became strange, but he always felt that something was wrong. Brian could not have wanted to leave Joanne.

During the past period, he could see clearly how Brian treated Joanne. If it was not out of love, Brian would never care about Joanne like that.

If Brian was trying to cope with Iris, it did not make sense either. If that was the case, according to Brian's style, he could just give the amount of money that she could not spend to Joanne, and tell Iris that he was very good to Joanne.

Things were not as simple as Joanne had thought.

In the end, Chris decided to take the time to ask someone out to have a chat.
