Joanne didn't know whether it was her illusion that time elapsed quickly.
Friday came so soon.
Freya through various difficulties and won the fifth week champion at Top Model. With an extremely high score over other players, she'd got a winning ticket.
In her words, she already disdained to celebrate.
As her score became higher and higher, Freya's became more and more popular.
The number of her fans on X was increasing. After each weekly live broadcast, some news and topics about her would be seen the next day.
She became a rising star with great momentum. Candy and the brokerage company were very happy to see that, but Chris became more and more worried-being famous meant being busy. In the past, Freya could not find him, but now, he had to make an appointment if he wanted to see her.
On Saturday, new clues were found in the case of David. Captain Turner, Joanne and Shawn were all called back to the police station to work overtime.
Although this case was shelved before, Joanne kept it in mind and tried to find clues when she had time. No one expected Captain Turner would discover new clues at this time.
The people in the office were so busy, but in the end, it turned out to be in vain as there was still no definite evidence to arrest Milo.
When it was dark, the entire office was filled with sighs except for the incandescent lights.
"That kid is too crafty." An old criminal policeman commented on Milo. "The Lawyer he hired is also sly. Getting something out of him is basically impossible."
"But the longer the case is delayed, the less clue we can find." Hannah distressfully held chin with her hand. "What should we do?"
"Go on!" Captain Turner came back with several files and looked cold. "Handle more urgent cases, but don't forget this one. As long as you haven't retired, don't give up the investigation!"
Captain Turner had always held this attitude toward the unsettled cases. He agreed with Hannah that time would bring away clues. But that was not absolutely right, and some clues would exactly take some time to emerge.
"It's not too early now. Get off work and go back to have a rest, guys." After saying that, Captain Turner went straight to his independent office with no sign of offing duty.
"You go back first." Hannah, who almost got up, sat down again. "I still have some things to deal with. I will accompany Captain Turner to work overtime!"
Joanne and other colleagues looked at each other and smiled. They knew Hannah's intention, so, they took their things and gradually left the office.
Because Joanne wanted to call Brian, she was the last to leave.
When she got out of the police station, a figure that she was not familiar with but could recognize came into her sight-
Tall and strong, in a black long trench coat, and almost invisible in the dark night, the man was no other than Rowdy.
"Happy coincidence." Rowdy came over and blocked the wind with his hand to light a cigarette. He asked after smoking the cigarette between his fingers, "Did you work overtime today?"
Joanne's voice was cold. "Yes, and all thanks to your brother."
As her voice fell, Milo came from a distance with his eyes lingering on her.
If it had not been for this woman, Rowdy wouldn't have come to the police station to pick him up.
What he didn't understand was that, in addition to the beauty and the innocent temperament, how this woman attracted him.
Joanne wasn't used to being looked at like a cargo, so, she looked away to the road-Brian hadn't arrived yet.
Rowdy bumped Milo hard with one of his elbows and his voice was fierce. "Don't look at her like that. Don't you see she is scared?"
Milo resisted the dull pain from his ribs and bowed to Joanne. "Miss Scott, I'm sorry."
"Milo, how did you do it?" Joanne flashily stared at Milo Black. "All the signs showed that you killed David, but you left no evidence there?"
"..."
If it were other people that questioned him, Milo would have already started beating him or her. However, this woman was so special to Rowdy, so, Milo could only look at Rowdy with querying eyes-he did not dare to touch the people Rowdy liked.
Rowdy signaled Milo not to make a sound, and he softly smiled and said, "Maybe you are wrong? Since there is no direct evidence, it's possible that your target is wrong. Why don't you change a target? Besides, David is an orphan, no one cares how he died and what should be done after his death. Why do you waste so many resources and energies on this case?"
"Orphans are also human." Alienation appeared in Joanne's cold look. "David has the same legal rights and obligations as you. We will definitely check the case out." Her gaze slowly moved to Milo. "We absolutely don't allow the murderer to go unpunished."
This time, Rowdy's laughter sounded disdainful. "Too young, too simple. Let me tell you, you have to work hard to make efforts for many things, but there will be no result, such as David's case, it's destined to become a pending case."
Joanne fearlessly looked at Rowdy's fierce eyes. "I don't believe it."
"I don't believe"
Some people once had stubbornly said these three words to Rowdy.
Eyes fixed on Joanne, Rowdy said off the topic, "I suddenly felt some similarities between you."
Joanne couldn't understand his words, but Milo understood them.
Milo's heart shivered and then he went up. "Brother, let's go back."
Rowdy didn't move, slowly reaching out his hands to touch Joanne's face-
Joanne's face changed, and she had never resisted someone like this before. As she just wanted to avoid the hands, a long and powerful arm firmly caught Rowdy's hands over her shoulder.
Before she could react, Joanne had been pulled to behind Brian by him.
Brian was expressionless, but he had great strength, and even Wesley, a tough man, would frown in pain if he was grabbed by Brian like that.
Rowdy calmly said, "Hey, who are you? Want to act a hero?"
Milo was speechless but still silently came up and whispered to Rowdy, "This is Brian, Joanne's husband."
Rowdy's fierce eyes became gloomy and sharp, and he stared at Brian's face.
"Brian... Brian... Lu..."
"Why does he look so familiar?"
"Who are you?" Rowdy's eyes became totally sharp.
Milo felt speechless even more.
"I've said he is Brian, Joanne's husband. Is there a problem with brother's brain or ears?"
"Don't entangle my wife again." Brian coldly warned Rowdy. "Otherwise, I'll get you go back where you come from!"
Rowdy came to himself from the shock he had experinced before and smiled. "Have you investigated me? Then, let me make it clear-" He pointed to Joanne and continued, "Your wife-I'll certainly get her."
"You'd better have such a capacity." Brian held Joanne's hand and looked back slightly when he left, with cold eyebrows, "I'm waiting for you."
He took Joanne down stages and got on the car. The black car quickly ran on the road and into the seemingly endless traffic stream.
Just like the last time, Brian held Joanne's firmly and as hard as before, and his eyes looked so deep that no one knew what he was thinking.
Joanne struggled with her hand. "Brian?"
This time, Brian came to himself quickly and took Joanne into his arms. "Accompany me to a place tomorrow, will you?"
"OK." Joanne felt that she should explain ahout what had happened just now. "I didn't expect to meet Rowdy. I wanted to wait for you there."
"I'll handle Rowdy," Brian said, "no matter what he do, don't pay attention to him, okay?"
Joanne truly believed in Brian and nodded. She hugged Brian's arm and rested her head on his shoulder. "I didn't want to talk to him in fact."
At the entrance of the police station, Rowdy still looked at the direction where Brian's car disappeared, and his eyes became more and more strange.
He had never felt so familiar with someone like this before.
Some of his old memories that were covered with dust seemed to come back to him now...
Milo felt a chill from his spine. "Don't tell me you changed your target and has a crush on Brian..."
"Investigate Brian. I must know all the detailed information of him before tomorrow noon," Rowdy suddenly ordered Milo, "especially his family background."
"He is a returnee," said Milo, "I've investigated him before. He moved to the United States with his family when he was a teenager. He established his comapany in the US at the very beginning and moved the headquarters to Arlington later."
"I don't want to know these things," Rowdy said, "I want to know about his parents."
"Parents...?" Milo looked at Rowdy with surprise and suspicion. His intuition told him that something was strange. "Brother, what happened? Is he an acquaintance of yours?"
Rowdy smiled and said, "Maybe he is my 'old friend'."
Milo instantly understood what he meant.
Old friend? There was no such thing in Rowdy's life.
He only had--old enemies.
"I will start investigating him immediately when I return." While he said that, his cell phone rang. He looked at the caller ID and eased his face. He passed the phone to Rowdy. "It's Ian."
Rowdy looked gentler as he answered the phone, and a calm voice sounded in the receiver. "Daday..."
Ten minutes later, Rowdy rang off the phone and returned it to Milo.
"Brother, how about... we take Ian back to China?" Milo said, "He is only four years old. It's too pitiful to leave him to the nanny in the US alone. I heard that children at this age needed their parents the most."
For a moment, Rowdy couldn't help but be persuaded.
But the next second, he suppressed the feeling well.
"Nothing will change even if I get him back. I won't have time to accompany him. Besides, it's not safe for him to stay here. Once others know he is my son, he will be many people's target."
"Can't we look after a child with so many of us here?" Milo refused to believe him. "He is your son, but now, it seems that you abandoned him..."
"Shut up!" Rowdy yelled. "He is the only offspring I left for my family, and he will grow up, get married, and have children abroad. I"ll never allow him to come back, never! He should never have known I'm his father!"
Milo dared not to say anything more, and dared not to sigh and repeated that the child was poor.
The boy was four years old, but the time he stayed with Rowdy was less than three months.
But the blood was thicker than the water, and the child was willing to be close to him.
It was not that Rowdy didn't care for this child, but that he couldn't.
He couldn't let outsiders know that he had a son, couldn't go out with him, or even couldn't be too close to him.
Born as Rowdy's son, Ian was destined not to grow up in a normal environment.
