The night felt longer than the night she spent with her mother in the intensive care unit waiting for fate to decide.
When Freya looked out on the bed that leaned against the window, her thoughts became messy and she always felt like the dark night sky would collapse in the next second.
She had already eaten the sleeping pills prescribed by the doctor. But why couldn't she fall asleep?
Perhaps it was because she never thought about getting married so suddenly, even more suddenly than Joanne did half a year ago.
In fact, there was nothing to think about.
Even if she didn't marry Travis the next day, she would still have to marry him once Mr. Norris woke up.
Freya gently pulled down the curtains, closed her eyes, and sank into the darkness.
Let it be.
Freya woke up very early the next day. The mirror reflected her poor spirit that she had to skillfully conceal herself with cosmetics.
In the end, she lifted the corners of her lips with both hands.
"Freya, smile."
She did not realize that her eyes were dim. She could disguise a smile on her lips, but her eyes still seeped unhappiness.
"Dad, Mom." Before leaving the hospital, Freya held on her parents' hands at the same time. "I am getting married today. Can you wake up soon? Otherwise, I can't host a wedding. You know how much I've looked forward to my own wedding."
Even though, the groom was not the one she loved.
On the way to the County Clerk Office, Freya remained quiet. She rested her chin on one hand and watched the traffic without observing anything.
Her eyes were empty.
Her head was empty
Her whole person was empty.
She could only suppress the impulse to back out by completely emptying herself.
Travis just quiet drove on, but he was crystal clear that no couple should be this calm on their way to get registered.
The dazzling sports car pulled up in front of the County Clerk Office. Freya looked at the three golden-stamped characters, and her mind fell into moments of absence.
She couldn't wait any longer. Otherwise, she would definitely run away.
In the next second, Freya unbuckled her seat belt and decisively pushed open the door to get off.
Travis stopped her in time. "Freya, it's not too late to call it off. I haven't told my parents yet. I won't blame you if you don't want to continue. I'll just think of today as taking you out for a ride."
"Travis, thank you." Freya smiled. "Let's go in."
"Are you certain about it? Are you clear about what it means to marry me?"
Freya lowered her head. "I am very certain. Also... I will never regret it."
What was there to regret doing the right thing?
The only thing she regretted was blindly loving Chris for so many years.
It was still early in the day, but the County Clerk Office was already bustling. A pair of young couples sat next to the marriage registration station cuddling with each other. Their faces looked hopeful for the future. Even the air floated with a sweet aroma.
Though Freya had attended to significant events, at the moment, she actually felt a little scared and wanted to back out...
"Sit down." Travis's voice brought Freya back to reality. "There are a lot of people; we'll have to wait for our turn."
"... Sure."
Freya sat down mechanically and twisted her hands anxiously. In the next second, a dry and rough hand wrapped around her hand. Travis said, "Freya, you can't regret it now."
"... I won't."
Only Freya felt the rims of her eyes getting warm.
It must be because she was so happy.
...
Traffic during the morning rush hour was so terrible that it extinguished the fighting spirit which just sparked in everyone.
Tens of thousands of cars flooded the road, filling up all the spaces till the end of the roads.
The driver frowned at the traffic condition. "Boss Scott, there's... no way of driving there."
Chris's brows frowned even deeper on his sullen face. "How far are we from the County Clerk Office?"
"Four or five kilometers." The driver pointed to the front. "It's just straight forward."
At the finish of his sentence, Chris already stepped outside the car. He passed cars after cars and lightly hopped over the roadside divider to the sidewalk.
The driver opened his mouth exaggeratedly.
He knew that Chris had practiced close combat and had some good skills. But since he hired bodyguards for security work, no one had ever seen Chris make a move.
Chris was typically perceived as a gentleman dressed in suits, as opposed to a scary martial arts man with great strength.
It was the driver's first time seeing Chris set aside his gentleman posture to rush to the sidewalk regardless of the bustling crowd.
Soon, his figure quickly disappeared from the driver's eye sight.
The four to five kilometers distance was nothing to Chris. The cold breeze in late autumn swept across his ears, but he felt no discomfort even in his leather shoes.
He was clearly focused on the text message from Travis.
-Freya agreed to marry me; we are now heading to the County Clerk Office.
He accepted Freya's anger and ignorance toward him. He would even allow her to beat him for he was the one at fault first.
But he could not accept her marriage to others.
Chris did not know how fast his pace was, but he always felt too slow and wanted to run faster.
Amid late autumn, people had already begun wrapping scarves around the neck to keep warm. When Chris arrived at the entrance of the County Clerk Office, a thick layer of sweat permeated his forehead, slightly moistening the black hair on his forehead.
Without taking time to catch his breath, he rushed into the County Clerk Office and saw Travis and Freya sitting in front of an application window.
He felt something broken apart inside his head when Freya picked up the pen. Without further consideration, he rushed over to snatch away the pen from Freya's hand and slammed it out.
Freya only signed a "Norris" on that piece of paper, and the last stroke was pulled long when he snatched the pen away.
Chris developed an inexplicable hatred toward the piece of paper. He grabbed it, tore it up, and raised his hand to let the shredded paper fall.
He glared at Freya as if he wanted to devour her into his belly. His chest was breathing up and down with anger.
The entire County Clerk Office fell silent.
The staff stunned at Chris. They had seen people who came to cause trouble, but they had never seen anyone so overbearing yet so unscrupulous.
The other couples who came to get registered were also stunned, for they had seen a handsome man before, but not as attractive as Chris.
Freya watched Chris through the flying pieces of paper. The panic and uneasiness she had felt earlier suddenly disappeared.
Though she hated to admit it, the hidden fact in her heart was that she was waiting for Chris.
Travis was the only one who remained unchanged to the situation.
Earlier when he got on the car, he sent a text message to Chris as a way of giving Freya one last chance.
Since Chris arrived at the last minute, perhaps it was destiny.
Chris gripped Freya's hand and tried to drag her outside. After two steps, Freya finally came to react and struggled. "Chris, let me go!"
Chris ignored her.
Freya bent down her head and bit his wrist. The harder she bit, the harder Su Sucheng dragged her. He didn't let go, and she soon tasted his rusty blood.
Eventually, Freya's soft heart gave up.
"Lunatic!" She pushed Chris forcefully. "What are you doing!"
The blood stained Chris's sleeve cuff, but he didn't budge. Instead, he directly picked up Freya and walked out of the County Clerk Office.
Freya struggled to free herself by punching down on him, but it felt like her punches came down to cotton. Chris did not put her down until they arrived in front of the car.
She sought the chance to run, but Chris violently pressed her against the door and stared at her like a wolf. "Freya, unless I take you here, otherwise, never set foot in this place."
Freya also calmed down and smiled. "Oh, really?" She flipped her hair. "Chris, you better let me go right now! Or I will call the police immediately!"
She took out her cell phone and it was instantly taken away by Chris. Slam! It shattered into pieces.
"You..." Freya's nature was stimulated once she became agitated. She lifted her feet and tried to kick Chris, but instead, she was easily held down.
She had no choice but to turn her head away. "Chris, listen carefully-I don't love you anymore."
Chris's eyes sank, and after a few seconds, his lips slightly lifted up. "That's fine, I don't mind."
"..." After a long silence, Freya suddenly broke out. "What is your problem? We can never be together. I will never love you as much as I used to. Weren't you used to clean-cut breakups? What are you waiting for now!"
Chris slightly blinked his eyes, which was a very dangerous sign.
He asked, "Do you really want to marry Travis?"
"Of course!" Freya looked directly into Chris's eyes, and said word by word, "I should have been married to Travis. In that case, my parents would not be involved in that accident, and I would not be caught in this mess with you!"
"Chris, I have never regretted what I had done. But now, I really regret loving you, do you understand?"
Chris's gaze suddenly dimmed, and unknowingly, Freya's heart shook as well.
"What is it going to take for you to forgive me?" His voice was gentle and full of helplessness.
He would probably never say this to another person.
Freya shook her head. "I never will."
"Fine." Chris clenched his hand into a fist. "We will entangle ourselves like this till the last day of our lives."
Freya felt frightened for no reason.
What Chris meant by entanglement for a lifetime was definitely not as simple as it seemed.
She looked at him carefully. "I can forgive you, but you just have to promise me one thing."
He looked at her and motioned her to continue.
Freya said, "Let me marry Travis."
Chris's knuckles turned white and his anger turned into laughter. "Freya, in your dreams!
"It fine even if you don't agree." Freya said indifferently, "I have already decided to marry Travis anyway, let me go!"
At this time, the phone in Chris's pocket rang, and he emptied one hand to pick up the phone. Freya took the opportunity to slip but was eventually caught by his quick eyes and hands.
"Chris!" She struggled with anger. "I said let me go! Believe it or not, I'll bite you until you die of blood loss!"
Chris knitted his eyebrows and looked at her. "Stop yelling."
"Shut up! Let me go!" This time she was really going to bite Chris.
Chris covered her mouth. "Your dad woke up."
