Freya's eyes widened.
Chris was tricking her, right?
Then, she soon realized that, in times like this, Chris couldn't have tried to fool her anymore.
While she was at a loss, Freya already opened the car door and ordered her. "Get in! To the hospital."
Freya's hands were trembling and she didn't think too much. She dashed into Chris's car and clutched his hands. "It's true, right? You're not lying to me, are you?"
Her beautiful eyes were watery, and it was the first time that Chris had seen her look both afraid and expectant. She looked so strong that no one could break her down, yet so fragile that it seemed she would fall to pieces the next second.
Chris showed her his call history. "The hospital called me."
"Why did they call you?" Freya was flustered. "They should have called me!"
Chris answered helplessly, "Your phone was broken."
As expected, Freya collected herself the next second. She dropped his hand and glared at him. She swiftly shrank into a corner and managed to be as far as possible away from him in an enclosed area.
Right now, Chris didn't have the time to care about something trivial like this, and he just ordered the chauffeur. "Fast."
The morning rush hour had ended and the traffic condition was pretty good. Therefore, their chauffeur drove really fast and it didn't take long to get them to the front of the hospital.
Freya almost stormed into the hospital and only blurted out an apology even after bumping into others in the hallway.
When she pushed the ward door open, her hair was a little messy, and her clothes were not as neat as usual. Her reddish eyes were clouded with a layer of moisture, and she looked terrible.
Many doctors were beside her father's sickbed, and she could not see clearly whether her father was awake or not.
She suddenly felt her steps become heavy.
During the past days, every second, she had hoped her parents would wake up. Now, she was afraid to go in because she feared to see her father's closed eyes once she went in. She was afraid that all of this had been just a wild dream.
At some point, Chris had stood next to her. He held her hand, and suddenly, she thought. "No matter what the result is, I have to face it."
Breaking away from Chris's grip, she walked over and the doctors made way for her. She saw Mr. Norris still lying on the bed in that same spot, but in the morning sunshine, his eyes were open.
This had been the best morning sunshine she had ever seen in her entire life.
"Dad..."
The armor she used to force herself to put on, the fake toughness, all of it crumbled down at that moment. Freya dived onto her father's sickbed, whining while holding his hands.
The darkness that used to shroud her started to dissipate. She finally saw a silver lining.
"Don't cry." Mr. Norris grabbed his daughter's hand with the only strength left in him. "Freya, don't cry."
"OK, I won't." Freya wiped her tears, only to find him slowly closing his eyes.
A burst of thunder crashed above her head. She shivered from head to toe and cried out involuntarily, "Dad!"
"Miss Norris, don't worry." A doctor helped Freya up. "Mr. Norris has woken up and has been feeble. He just fell asleep. Come to my office, and I'll tell you Mr. Norris's current condition.
"Currently, Mr. Norris has been recovering well and could be discharged in a month. As for the detailed situation, we'll have to wait for the test results."
"What about my mom?" Freya hurriedly added, "How's my mom?"
"Your mother doesn't seem to... have recovered for now. Her injury is more serious than your father's." The doctor said, "But don't worry. She might also wake up like your father."
Freya nodded, thanked the doctor, and left the office.
"Don't rush. Take your time. God has favored me by sending Mr. Norris back. As for mom, I won't give up."
On her way back to the ward, she found Chris standing in the hallway. She calmly walked over to him and said, "You can leave now. I don't think my dad wants to see your face when he wakes up. Since I loved you, I haven't done anything he wanted me to do. Now, I don't think I can't still upset him, right?"
Chris seemed to have other things to say but finally left quietly.
Looking at his figure, Freya suppressed the bitterness welling up inside her. She looked away and headed back to the ward.
The doctor said that given a good rest, Mr. Norris would wake up again. Therefore, to spare him from seeing the white ceiling and doctors in white coats all alone when he woke up, Freya had the secretary send all the important files to the hospital.
The news that the old president had woken up spread inside Norris Group and the worried employees finally felt relaxed.
At around 3 p.m., Freya just closed a folder. Suddenly, she heard a voice, a feeble voice that she couldn't be more familiar with. "Freya..."
"Dad!" Freya rushed to the sickbed and clutched her father's hand. "Yes, I'm here."
"Where's you mom?" Mr. Norris asked.
Turning to her mom in the other bed, Freya held back her tears. "Mom hasn't woken up yet, but the doctor said she'll be all right soon. Don't worry."
To make her father recover more quickly, she had to tell a lie.
Maybe her mother really would wake up soon?
Mr. Norris nodded. "How about you? How's the company?"
"I'm fine. And so is the company." Freya smiled. "Dad, I'm negotiating with a UK company, the one you've been negotiating with. If I sign a contract with them, you'll forgive me, OK?"
"Silly kid." Mr. Norris patted the bedside. "Sit. I want to tell you something."
Freya obediently sat down. Seeing Mr. Norris close his eyes again, she thought that he got tired again so she tucked him in, not expecting to hear him again.
"Over the past few days, I've been hearing you talk to your mom and me. I wanted to wake up to tell you not to cry, but I couldn't."
Freya became dazed. "So, you heard me when I said I'd marry Travis?"
"Yes, I did." Mr. Norris slightly sighed. "So no matter what it took, I had to open my eyes."
"Dad..." Freya burst into tears.
Mr. Norris managed to lift his hand but failed to wipe the tears for her. Freya put his hand close to her cheek. "Dad, I'll do whatever you want me to in the future."
"Freya." Mr. Norris looked at his daughter. "I didn't wake up because I wanted you to marry Travis. I just wanted to tell you that you can be with Chris. You don't have to marry Travis anymore."
Freya's mind went blank at that moment, and then she stared at her father in disbelief. "Why?"
Mr. Norris raised the corner of his lips with effort. "That day, I wanted to watch your performance, but I faltered because I don't want you to think that I'd forgiven you. I set out at the last minute and then got caught up in the accident.
"At that moment, our car tumbled and your mother protected me. I was aching all over my body and I didn't know if I would see you again. So at that moment, I suddenly realized what matters most in a person's life.
"And that is to spend a peaceful lifetime with the one you love. With that premise, all things, no matter right or wrong, should be forgiven.
"Before I blacked out, I thought, why can't I spoil you like when you were young? If you want to be with someone, then be with him. If I die like this, the last time I spent with my daughter would be a miserable one. If I hadn't stopped you, the accident, all of that, wouldn't have happened."
Freya's tears had wet the back of Mr. Norris's hand. She shook her head. "Dad, I don't love him anymore."
Mr. Norris smiled feebly. "Freya, don't be stupid."
Then, Mr. Norris fell asleep again and didn't wake up for the rest of the day.
Freya finished her work and went to see the doctor for some information. She learned from the doctor that Mr. Norris was restricted to mild liquids right now, so she immediately called their chef to prepare and send them here tomorrow.
Early the next morning, the servant brought porridge, and Mr. Norris had just woken up. Freya carefully fed him with a spoon. Though he didn't eat much, she could see the satisfaction in her father's eyes.
In the past, she thought that making money to buy her parents things was loving them; now, it turned out that the deepest and sincerest love was to keep them company.
"Dad, I'm going to the company." After feeding him, Freya took her bag and waved at her father. "I'm going to deal with that UK company and land the contract!"
Maybe her father's waking up brought her good luck because the UK company's CEO personally picked up the call and told her that he happened to have plans in her city. As for the detailed information of the cooperation, they would discuss it face to face.
Freya could feel their sincerity just by their words.
From that day, good things happened one after another.
First, Mr. Norris had been growing stronger day by day, and he could wake up and fall asleep at normal times. He could even watch a part of a movie with Freya after she got off work, or simply talk with her for one to two hours.
Second, the meeting with the UK company was exceptionally smooth and they even agreed on terms that were better than those that Mr. Norris had proposed. After signing her name, Freya heavily shook hand with the other party.
She had proved herself in front of the entire company.
In the victory celebration in the evening, Freya put on a gown instead of the dull suit, and carefully made herself up. She was still the same old person but carried a more reserved manner in her behavior now.
It had been Freya's happiest night in almost a month. She laughed like a kid, joked with other employees, and received congratulations from the board of directors. In the end, she was immersed in a kind of satisfaction she couldn't describe.
Then, having received another call from the hospital, she lifted the hem of her dress so that she could rush out of the ballroom.
"Miss Norris, your mother has woken up and she wants to see you."
For the first time, Freya felt so grateful to the world. Finally, she became the lucky one.
After half a month, Mr. Norris could walk freely on his own. At the same time, her mother's injury had been more serious, so she needed more rehabilitation.
Freya had felt very content, and she would accompany her during her mother's rehabilitation every time. Only by seeing her parents recover day by day could she feel less guilty.
However, in this way, she became busy as hell again. After another busy half month, she finally had time to see Travis.
"No need to apologize." Travis knew why Freya came to him and just smiled casually. "I told Chris that we're getting married. I just placed a bet. I thought, even if he made it there, he couldn't have stopped us if you really wanted to marry me, no matter how hard he tried. Freya, we all have our fate. And I have to admit that we can't be together even if you want to now."
"Travis." Staring at Travis, Freya wanted to say many things, but in the end, she just said two words. "Thank you."
She thanked him for having accompanied her for four hours every day when she was at such a loss.
She thanked him for offering another option when she thought irrationally.
She thanked him for having loved her.
"Don't be. I was just atoning for myself." Travis shrugged. "I'd used the Everbridge Group's plan to separate you from Chris. I owed Chris for that. Now we're even."
