Joanne slowly turned and saw Gavin standing outside the door. So she got up and went out.
Gavin glanced inside the room and saw the antipyretic paste on Brian's forehead, and the quilt that also properly covered him. He smiled and said, "I was going to call Dr. Chen, but now I don't need it."
After that, he signaled Joanne to go downstairs.
After all, Joanne used to be the hostess of this family. Naturally, sitting down in the living room, she first asked, "Why is he not at the hospital?"
"The doctor wants him to be hospitalized, but-" Gavin spread his hands and continued, "You know, if he doesn't want to be hospitalized, even if several bodyguards are at the door of the ward, they can't stop him."
Joanne knew why Brian did not stay in that hospital so she did not say anything.
Reason told her that she should leave, but thinking of Brian who was still having the fever upstairs, she couldn't move at all.
After a long time of silence, which was broken by Gavin, "Joanne, you're not asking me why he went to the hospital for stomach bleeding?"
"...He has always had problems with his stomach." Joanne turned and dared not to look directly at Gavin.
"That's right. But-" Gavin smiled and said, "Since he married you, his diet was very regular, and he never had such problems until today."
Joanne did not say anything. Gavin continued to say, "He has been working day and night. At night, he drank more wine for entertainment than the meals he ate during daytime, and the three meals were not made on time, plus, there were injuries that had not been dealt with after the car accident... It should be strange for him to survive all of this." Gavin stared at Joanne, and said with a fake smile, "You see, he finally fell."
How could Joanne not understand that those words were said to her. The hand holding the jacket unconsciously tightened. "Gavin, stop it."
Gavin smiled deeper and his eyes became sharper. "Didn't you tell me a few days ago that it was none of your business about how he was? Why did you come back? What were you doing?"
"I thought he was not at home, so I came over to get something." Joanne tried to make her tone sound natural. "After all we used to be husband and wife. I accidentally saw him having a fever and I just can't ignore it."
"Used to be husband and wife..." Gavin said those words again and raised his lips.
Joanne missed the deep meaning under his eyes because she didn't dare to look at him.
Gavin stood up and stretched out. "Since you are back, take care of him for one night. I will find a way to get him to the hospital tomorrow morning. I need to go to sleep."
Joanne realized it until Gavin went up to the second floor, and she called out, "Gavin!"
"This week, I was tired to see him torturing himself, I really didn't want to see him look like this. He's all yours." Gavin waved his hand without turning his head and disappeared at the door of the room.
Joanne was so annoyed that she held her forehead-it had been so long, why was she still so easy to be controlled when it came to something related to Brian?
However, even if Gavin did not ask her to stay, would she really leave?
She knew it too well that she couldn't just let Gavin look after Brian who was sick right then.
Joanne returned to the room.
She also measured the body temperature of Brian with an electronic thermometer; 38 degrees, a little lower than moments before. Maybe the antipyretic paste had worked.
Looking closely, he seemed to be a little safer in his sleep; at least he didn't frown that deeply.
Joanne breathed a sigh of relief and covered him with the quilt. She accidentally touched his hand and before she took it back, it was caught by him.
She thought that she had awakened Brian. Joanne took a breath silently looked at him carefully. She found that his eyes were still closed, then she put down the high hanging heart.
But that way, she did not dare to break away from his grasp.
Staying with Brian for so long, she knew best how alert he was; even if he had lost his mind because of the fever, as long as she moved, she might wake him up.
Besides, if Gavin did not lie to her, Brian had not rested during all that time, so she should allow him to sleep well.
Joanne took a cushion and sat down on the carpet next to the bed, letting Brian hold her hand.
With a faint light, she looked at Brian almost greedily.
Since she married him, even if he went on a business trip to the other side of the ocean, she had not tried avoiding seeing him for so long.
In the past ten days, she missed him so much, but perhaps because of the children in her belly, she didn't feel that the days were so hard to pass. Still, she had a deep sense of emptiness before going to sleep every day.
Until then, she realized that she missed Brian more than she thought; even if it was his voice, his eyebrows, she missed them all.
Just then, she finally had the opportunity to look at him up close; she didn't even want to blink because she would lose a second to see him.
She had been sitting in front of the bed like that, greedily looking at Brian, and from time to time she measured his body temperature with a thermometer.
In the early hours of the morning, Joanne was already sleepy and it was unbearable. When she was trying to sleep for a while after measuring his body temperature, she saw the number on the electronic thermometer: 39.5 degrees.
That horrible number suddenly wiped out Joanne's sleepiness. She violently retracted from Brian's hand; she stood up and ran to the next room to knock on Gavin's door.
Gavin was still alert, and soon opened the door. He was sleepy and asked, "What happened?"
"Call the ambulance," Joanne said, "Brian has a fever of almost forty degrees, and he can't wait until tomorrow to go to the hospital!"
"So serious?!" Gavin was completely awake, and he did not forget to appease Joanne first, "Don't worry, I will contact the doctor immediately, go back to the room and look after him."
Joanne ran back to the room and found that the hand of Brian, which had been holding her hand, reached outside the quilt. He frowned deeply and called her name vaguely,
"Joanne... Joanne..."
Joanne tried to hold his hand, and he was like a frightened child who was finally comforted. The tight brows were gradually appeased and he grabbed her hand tighter than before.
Gavin finished the call and went to the master bedroom. He sighed and said, "He came back in the afternoon while having a fever. Simon and I wanted to call the car and send him to the hospital. But once the doctor barely touched him, he woke up."
Joanne said, "He has never liked others to touch him."
"Yeah," Gavin smiled, "He only likes you."
Just as Joanne remained silent, someone came in. She looked subconsciously and found out they were actually a doctor and a nurse.
"Come in," Gavin greeted the doctor and explained to Joanne, "I was afraid he wouldn't be well in the middle of the night, so I didn't send them back in the afternoon and arranged them to rest on the first floor."
There were two nurses who were still very young, and they probably were interested in Joanne, a woman who was recently sprayed on the Internet, so their eyes turned to Joanne from time to time until the doctor who led them screamed, "Come here to help!"
In the evening, the doctors and nurses tried to lift Brian, but as soon as they opened the quilt, he suddenly opened his eyes. As a result, they couldn't make it but they were scared to death.
The nurse still had some fears. She said, "Doctor Zhao, will Mr. Lambert..."
"He won't wake up," Joanne clenched Brian's hand and smiled at the doctor and the nurses, saying, "Please."
Joanne opened the quilt, and supported him together with Gavin. The two doctors came to help and put Brian on the stretcher.
Such a big move just made Brian frown. He said, "Joanne..." as if he were looking for her.
"I am here," Joanne took a long coat and put it on Brian, whispering in his ear, "You have a fever, we have to send you to the hospital."
Brian seemed to have heard Joanne's words. He didn't struggle and frown. He just grabbed Joanne's hand tightly, and he didn't wake up until he was sent to the ambulance.
The doctor quickly gave him an infusion, and the car broke through the cold wind in the early morning and headed for a private hospital in central city.
When they arrived at the hospital, the doctor first checked Brian to confirm that he had no other problems except fever. Another doctor told Joanne, "Mr. Lambert needs special rest in these days. He could only deal with the company's urgent affairs. Also, don't let him go home again, otherwise the situation will only get worse."
"I know," Joanne nodded and said, "Thank you doctor."
The doctor said, "You are welcome."
After seeing the doctor leave, Joanne turned to look at Brian on the bed, reaching into the bed and finding his right hand.
If she remembered correctly, he also had injuries on his right hand.
Pulling it out, the wound had already recovered, but the white scars were on the palm of his hand, which were kind of shocking.
When she proposed a divorce, he was angry but he had also hurt himself.
Since the marriage had been annulled, he even thought that she had done the cruelest thing in the world, but he was still reluctant to hurt her, why should he torture himself?
Joanne put Brian's hand back in the bed. Just then, the door of the ward was pushed open, and Gavin came in.
"I have already completed the transfer procedure," Gavin said.
Joanne nodded and said, "Go back to rest, I will be here."
Gavin doubted whether Joanne could stand it. "You..."
"I'm fine," Joanne said, "You have to deal with the company's affairs tomorrow. You need a break more than I do. Go back and leave it to me... But you have to promise me one thing."
"What?"
"I will leave tomorrow before he wakes up," Joanne pressed her lips, "Don't tell him that I was back at home, or that I was with him in the hospital."
She and Brian could not return to the past, so there was no meaning to let him know what she did.
Gavin didn't want to agree, but suddenly thought of something, and said directly, "No problem."
After that, he left, and Joanne missed the smile on his lips.
Haha, Joanne probably thought that since he had promised, he would also tell the doctor and nurse not to say anything, but he didn't!
Besides, he did not believe that Joanne could bear it till the following morning.
He dared to bet that it would not take long for Joanne to fall asleep at the bedside. After falling asleep... she actually dared to make sure that she could wake up!
According to his investigations in previous years, Joanne was a person who would sleep till 10 o'clock once she had the chance!
Even if Joanne could wake up... who could guarantee that Brian would not wake up earlier than her?
