Before resuming her relationship with Chris, Freya decided to have a good time.
Therefore, when she left the hospital in the afternoon and received a call, she promised her old pals without even hesitating to think that she would attend the party.
Not long after Freya left, Chris returned to the hospital after finishing his business.
Seeing Joanne enjoying her dinner, he breathed a sigh of relief and asked Aunt Nyla, "How was Joanne today?"
"She threw up several times in the morning. However, she has been feeling well all afternoon after that friend of hers came to visit," Aunt Nyla said with her eyes narrowing with laughter. "As you can see, she now has a better appetite."
Chris also wanted to laugh, but the smile froze in his face.
Among Joanne's friends, Freya was the only one who had a close contact with her. It was easy to guess who had visited that day.
"Aunt Nyla, I'm full." Joanne laid down the tableware. "Clear it away please."
"All right."
Aunt Nyla picked up the tableware to clean in the washroom, leaving Chris and Joanne in the ward.
"You can guess it was Freya who came today," Joanne said with a smile. "She's still the same; she hasn't changed at all."
"Her personality," Chris said helplessly, "will never change."
"It's New Year's Eve tomorrow" Joanne thought for a while and said, "Brother, go home and rest. You can't sleep well at all here and there is something very important following you."
Chris did have something very important next. So, he decided to drive back to his apartment and asked Aunt Nyla to stay with Joanne.
He received a call from Jack while driving on the pub street. Jack said that he was at a party at the Blue Jazz.
Chris's company had entitled its employees to New Year's holidays. He could not say anything even if Jack went for a winter swimming abroad, let alone a party at the Blue Jazz.
There should be some special issue for him to call deliberately.
Chris slowed down his car and said, "Tell me!"
"I saw Miss Norris at the Blue Jazz," Jack said hesitantly. "Travis, the Young Master of Clark Enterprises, had booked the whole Blue Jazz for a party today. Maybe Miss Norris went there after receiving his invitation."
"Travis?" With a frown on his face, Chris wrenched the wheel and drove his car to the parking lot of the pub street.
Friends were the last thing Freya needed in Arlington. It wasn't strange at all for someone to call her after hearing that she was back.
But Travis should definitely not be the one to call her!
Chris walked straight into the Blue Jazz after parking his car.
There were very dynamic music and cheers at the bar, producing an extraordinarily lively atmosphere. Freya, the kind of person who had a passion for those lively affairs, was the easiest to be lighted up.
Chris looked toward the dancing floor. Sure enough, Freya was performing a hot dance with Travis.
The crowd around the dancing floor jeered and yelled, "Travis! Freya! Your dancing should be sexier and hotter!"
Chris fetched Jack and left him some words. Not long after Jack nodded and walked away, the music at the bar was suddenly turned off.
The whole bar sank into an instant stillness. People who had been swaying back and forth on the dancing floor stopped with disappointment, staring vacantly at the DJ.
The DJ lifted his hands and said, "Sorry, sorry. There is something wrong with the audio system. It will take five minutes to repair it."
If waiting for five minutes, even the burning cells inside their bodies would calm down. People who had been swaying back and forth a minute ago walked away one after another, with booing and catcalls left above the dancing floor.
"Freya, have you enjoyed yourself?" Travis asked with a smile. "Shall we continue later?"
Freya said while waving her hand, "I've run myself out. By the way, where is your fiance?"
"She's gathering with her girlfriends. I will pick her up after they finished." After a pause he added, "We had a blind date under our parents' arrangement when she came back from abroad. I thought she was agreeable and she didn't dislike me. Our family conditions matched each other and my mother urged us to get married. So, I agreed. Anyway"
""
"Anyway, it doesn't make any difference to marry anybody," Travis said while shrugging his shoulders helplessly.
No one would know that what Travis wanted to tell Freya was: Anyway, it is impossible between us.
Freya pat on Travis's shoulder and said, "Have you heard that love would come in time? Maybe you will fall in love with her as days go by."
Travis was noncommittal and asked, "Let's talk about you. How's your plan for you and Chris?"
"I" Abruptly Freya felt a stream of cold eyesight when she was about to speak. She looked back unconsciously. And as expected, it was Chris.
He stood at the bar counter, starring at her and Travis coldly, with a fire light burning faster and faster from deep within his eyes.
Freya was glad that Chris was angry.
She turned back to Travis, with her face breaking into a wide grin, and said with an intentionally raised tone, "It was impossible between him and me. I will look for a boyfriend after the Spring Festival. Could you introduce to some excellent boys?"
Travis also noticed Chris, who was like a hidden danger not far from them. He said while feeling cold on his back, "Hey! I'm getting married, keep your hands off me. Go find others who can be in league with you. See you!"
Seeing Travis running away in a flurry before her, Freya stroked her hair, thinking about the next step of her plan. A young man of her age walked near, stretching out his hand, and said, "Hi, beauty. How are you?"
Freya nearly knew all the people who liked having fun in the bar, excluding the real stranger in front of her. She looked at the handsome face, feeling puzzled, and asked, "Who are you?"
"I'm Teng Jun. My family's company just moved to Arlington," Teng Jun said with a breeze-like smile. "Miss Norris, it's my pleasure to meet you."
Freya smiled. She was not surprised that Teng Jun knew of her. But when she was about to shake hands with Teng Jun, she felt an arm circled around her waist and was pulled back by an irresistible power, leaving Teng Jun and her fingers nearly touching.
"Boss Scott?" Teng Jun looked at Chris surprisingly and found his possessive body as well as his unhappy face. He suddenly made it clear and said with an apologetic smile, "You've misunderstood. It's a misunderstanding. I just want to greet Miss Norris."
"It's you that have a misunderstanding." Freya gently shook off Chris's hand and said, "I don't know him at all!"
But beyond her expectation, Chris was not angry at Freya's words at all. He even said with a perfect smile in his face, "Manager Teng, maybe you'd like a new kind of cocktail made by the bartender at the counter over there."
Teng Jun had not heard any affairs about Freya and Chris during his more than two months' time in Arlington. He almost believed in Freya whom said she did not know him.
But Chris's behavior apparently showed that he was putting up with his little girlfriend who had vented her spleen.
Teng Jun recognized that he wasn't Chris's opponent, so he walked away with a tactful nodding.
Freya glowered at Chris with her hand on her waist and yelled, "Why did you do that!?"
"You lied," Chris said coldly.
It was not the answer Freya had expected, so she was confused and asked, "What do you mean?"
"You told Teng Jun that you didn't know me," Chris said while his eyes were blazing with anger. "Then who was the man you wooed 10 years ago?"
That was just the untouchable past which Freya wanted to hide. She felt angered, how Chris dared to mention it?!
Freya could hardly control her temper and shouted, "I was blind 10 years ago, but now I've got good eyes! No longer would I take a look at you, so you can forget about that! Please don't just show up directly within my eyesight like this anymore. You've ruined my joy!"
"Your joy?" Chris asked with his eyes turning dim. "Is talking with Teng Jun a joy to you?"
"Anything that is not about you can be my joy now!" Freya resorted to sophistry, making up her mind to infuriate Chris.
Chris was really enraged for she denied all of their past. But he still showed a cool face, while anger surged from deep within his eyes, and said, "Freya... fine then!"
When Freya was wondering if she had gone too far, Chris's mobile phone suddenly rang. There came Wendy's voice.
"Cousin Brother, my cousin sister started vomiting again. Doctor Tian said you'd better come to the hospital." Wendy was almost crying at the end of her words.
Chris paled and said, "I'll be there right away!"
He glared at Freya, letting the thought of teaching her a lesson go for a while. Then he turned around and hurried out of the bar.
"Hey" Freya wanted to buttonhole Chris. But he left at a quick pace, with his figure disappearing in a flash at the door. She looked toward the direction he had left, feeling empty within her heart.
At that moment, Travis came up to her lightly with a cup of cocktail in his hand and said, "Freya, you went too far just now. Anyhow, you should have given respect to Chris in front of so many people."
"I didn't expect him to come, and I didn't mean to speak to him that way," Freya scratched in her hair with frustration. "I just can't figure out why I want to exasperate him today."
Travis asked with laughter, "Did you want to anger him to death?"
"Not really!" Freya denied at once. "I just wanted to make him angry." She thought seriously for a while and came to a conclusion, "Maybe I was still angry with him, and I was just venting my spleen!"
Travis showed his disdain with a sigh. "In my eyes, you just wanted to draw his attention."
"Nonsense!" Freya felt shocked by something and denied in a hurry, "I don't need that at all!"
"Just look at yourself. You've overreacted." Travis shook his head, started analyzing to Freya and said, "Things have changed a lot during the three months you left. You're not sure if Chris is still regretting about you, nor were you sure if he has started a new relationship. So, you drew his attention that way to prove that his heart is full of you as before."
Freya did not want to admit Travis's analysis, nor could she deny it.
"Let me tell you something," Travis said, "Chris had no girlfriend during the three months you left. Instead, he often went to see your parents on weekends. He had never been to parties with a female companion nor gotten too close to a girl. He has been keeping his integrity."
All at once Freya ran out to the door, but could not see Chris anywhere. What responded her was only the cold wind at late night blowing across the hall.
Chris had arrived at the hospital by that time.
Joanne was nearly collapsed after throwing up all the food she had for dinner, so Doctor Tian had to give her an infusion. She lay on the bed feebly, like a little fish that was barely breathing.
Doctor Tian called Chris out of the ward and said regrettably. "You'd better persuade her to give up if she's the same after the Spring Festival. There is hardly anywhere left on her body to receive an infusion."
After Chris came into the ward, Joanne struggled to open her eyes and looked at him. She wanted to say something but could barely get a word out.
He held Joanne's hand and said, "If you want to say something, tell me tomorrow. Just sleep and I will stay here with you."
Within minutes, Joanne was sunk in a deep sleep, exhausted.
Chris pulled over a deck chair, lying down with a quilt covering his body, but could not fall asleep at all.
Things about Joanne, Freya who didn't seem to forgive him He wondered if he could have a happy Spring Festival.
