The lift went down and its bright, tough doors opened, then Chris released Freya.
Freya pressed her lips together and tried to hold back a smile. She said, "Can we leave like this?"
"Jack and Gavin will handle it." Chris took off his coat and put it on Freya. He said, "If we don't leave now, we won't be able to leave until tomorrow morning unless they drink me under the table."
Freya looked Chris up and down, saying, "Mr. Scott, you seem to be in a hurry."
Chris checked the time, thinking, "We'll be late if I don't hurry up."
He instantly took Freya's hand and walked out of the hotel.
An attendant had stopped the car in front of the hotel. Chris tipped him and took the car keys. He opened the door and motioned for Freya to get inside. He said, "Come with me."
Freya had thought he was in a hurry to get home.
From his words, however, he was not going home.
Freya got into the car expectantly. Five minutes later, they arrived at Jiangbian in the downtown area.
Jiangbian was the most popular scenic spot in Arlington. It was around midnight and there were few tourists there. The buildings along both sides of the river were reflected in the water, producing a more prosperous city scenery.
"Why did you take me here?" Freya looked at Chris with doubt. "Are you going to say you love me with the river water as witness?"
Chris looked at his watch again; there were only three seconds left.
He pointed at the sky and motioned for Freya to look up. At that moment, with a big "bang-" sound, beautiful fireworks flew straight into the sky, blooming gorgeously in the air.
It was like the bell that announced the start of a feast. Immediately afterward, the lights of the landmark building across the river, as well as dozens of other edifices, were all turned on, which lit up the entire east bank at once.
The lights flickered with colorful beams, showing too many polychrome images for their eyes to take in. The fireworks bloomed in the night sky one after another as if to light up the entire city.
The riverside, which had been quiet because it was late at night, suddenly became lively again. Lots of people gathered there to enjoy the surprising fireworks and light show.
Freya sat in the car, staring at the gorgeous scenery outside, speechless-she didn't know what to say.
Although Arlington didn't ban fireworks, the City Police Station would absolutely not allow a large number of fireworks like that to be displayed on ordinary days. She couldn't imagine how much effort Chris had spent to communicate with the administration.
The light show appeared to be easy to organize, but actually that was much more difficult than a firework show. Besides the designing, it would have been a huge project to synchronize dozens of buildings.
Chris had done all that for her.
Chris opened the door and said, "How about watching them outside?"
Freya nodded vacantly and followed Chris to the riverside.
Just then, a giant firework bloomed above their heads. After the dazzling fire lights, a line of English letters appeared in the night sky: I LOVE YOU.
Freya looked up into the sky, unconsciously turning her lips into a smile. She felt surrounded by those letters.
Chris hugged her from behind to shelter her from the cold winds and said, "I wanted them to be Chinese characters, but the meteorological bureau said that the wind direction tonight was unpredictable, and the firework designer could not guarantee that the complex Chinese characters could appear whole in the air."
Freya knew that. It was easy to design the shape of a firework while it was difficult to design it into texts because the constantly changing winds would blow away the strokes. It was hard indeed for Chris to have designed the line of English letters.
The fireworks continued blooming, lighting up the night sky above Arlington as well as Freya's mood.
Freya turned and said to Chris, "Have you ever thought about what to do if the fireworks are scattered by the winds after they fly into the sky?"
"I arranged someone in the meteorological bureau. So I know exactly if there will be wind tonight," Chris said with leisure, "and even if that happens, I could still handle it."
With that, he motioned for Freya to look at the river.
At that moment, the landmark building across from the river suddenly shed a light on the wide river, displaying a line of Chinese characters: Freya, I love you.
The lights from dozens of buildings across the river flashed more gorgeously, forming a visual feast. The drowsy city was awakened while the sparkling river was shining gloriously, and the riverside was filled up with more and more people. The lights of nearby residential areas were gradually turned on with people standing on their balconies. The reporters who arrived for the news raced against the clock to record the once-in-a-lifetime moment.
Freya was immersed in Chris's arms. Looking at the Chinese characters over the river, she felt something had occupied her heart and it nearly flowed from within. She looked back at Chris, saying, "Thank you. Though I have known you for so many years, today I realized for the first time that you're such a romantic man."
To his ex-girlfriends, Chris had either sent flowers or brand-name products, which had been disdained by Freya. She had thought that his way of showing kindness was nothing new, though it could please women.
Chris gazed at Freya, and the darkness could not cover up the deep love in his eyes. He said, "You made me a romantic man."
He really loved her, and he thought that even though he had racked his brains to prepare these things for her, it was far from enough.
Freya could not deny that she had been completely moved by his words.
The fireworks and light show lasted for 20 minutes, and according to Mrs. Norris, that stood for "loving you".
When all that ended, the reporters who had gone there to take photos noticed Chris and Freya. They tried to get close to the couple to do an interview. Chris politely refused them and took Freya back to the car.
It was warm in the car. Freya took off Chris's coat and threw it on the back seat. After the car started, she braced her head and rubbed his leg with the toe of her high heels. She asked, "When did you start to plan all this?"
"The day after you came to visit me the first time when you returned."
That morning, Chris hugged Freya, and for the first time, he said "let's get married", which was rejected by Freya.
After thinking it over, he realized that Freya had lost much and borne pressure that ordinary people couldn't imagine. She had gone through all that for 10 years and finally started a relationship with him, so she wouldn't marry him that easily.
That was why he had planned all that himself, including having the ring customized, asking Levine to design the dress for Freya, finding the best designers for the light show and firework effects, coordinating the lighting of dozens of buildings, as well as keeping it secret from Freya.
He had taken great pains to oversee every detail, for he only wanted to hear Freya say,"Yes, I will marry you."
Freya changed her pose and rubbed Chris's leg again. She said, "So that's why you asked Levine to design a dress for me today."
Exactly, on that night, Chris wanted Freya to be the most beautiful focus.
He tilted his head and glanced at Freya. She was lazily bracing her head while stretching out her slender calves to him coquettishly, with her exquisite figure outlined by the dress.
He squinted, saying, "Are you on fire?"
"No." Freya gave him a faint smile and rubbed Chris twice with the toe of her shoes. But she said in a serious voice, "You're driving, stay focused."
Chris could hardly get himself focused, but he took a deep breath and stepped on the accelerator. Then the car drove to the underground parking lot of the apartment.
As Freya was about to get out of the car, she was suddenly off the seat-Chris picked her up and carried her out of the car.
She struggled and said, "What are you doing?"
Chris quickly carried Freya into the lift, pinned her against the wall, and eagerly kissed her lips before the doors closed.
"Don't..." Freya stopped Chris in time and pointed at the security camera. She said, "Don't forget that they are watching the apartment monitors 24 hours a day."
Chris looked at it, and for the first time, he felt that its existence was very unsightly. He sheltered Freya and whispered to her, "After we get the licenses, we'll move to the villa in the suburbs."
"Why?" Freya was puzzled. "Didn't you think it convenient for you to commute when you bought it?"
"Things changed," Chris said with a mysterious look on his face, "it's more convenient to live in a villa now."
The entire big villa belonged to them, he wouldn't worry about the monitors when they were kissing, and other strangers behind the monitors wouldn't be able to see how sexy Freya was.
Freya finally knew what Chris was thinking. She patted his neckline with a smile and said, "We haven't had a wedding yet, my parents won't agree that I should live with you!"
Chris laughed and said nothing.
If Freya had said those words before that day, she might be right. But after talking with her father just a while ago, he was sure that if she moved in with him, he wouldn't stop it.
"Leave it to me," Chris said confidently, "you just need to go home and pack."
As Chris's voice died down, the lift doors opened with a "ding". He held onto Freya as they walked out and couldn't wait to kiss her lips.
It was a one-family, one-staircase apartment, so he needn't worry about the monitors, let alone worry about encountering other people.
Freya then began to enjoy Chris's kiss. The two hugged and kissed each other all the way to the door. When they got into the house, Freya's dress was messy and Chris's tie had been ripped off, with his shirt partly unbuttoned.
Chris looked at Freya with enthusiasm and closed the door with a "bang". He cupped her waist from behind and pinned her against the door with a deep smile in his eyes.
Freya had never seen Chris smiling like that. She looked at him with doubt, saying, "Are you a fool?"
Chris didn't mind at all being made fun of by Freya. He said, "Freya, I'm very happy."
In terms of regulating his moods, Chris did as well as Brian. As long as they wished, no one could tell whether they were happy or angry.
They were in high positions, holding the lifeblood of an enterprise, and they hardly took the initiative to express their emotions.
Because they needed to stay calm and make correct judgments of current situations.
That was the first time that Chris had said he was very happy.
Freya knew that he meant his words, without any false display of his affections, so she decided to make Chris happier.
She unbuttoned Chris's shirt and unknowingly or accidentally touched Chris's sharp abdominal muscles. He took a deep breath and said, "Freya?"
Freya made a "hush" gesture, threw off her high heels, and kissed Chris's lips as he usually did. She kissed him from his lips to eyes, to the neck and collarbone, searching for his most vulnerable part.
Chris slowly realized what Freya wanted to do. But after all that happened that night, his patience had been exhausted.
He picked Freya up and carried her into the bedroom. He placed her on the bed and said, "Freya, you are not skilled enough."
"..." Freya felt unconvinced, with her eyes widened-that was not what she had expected! She had expected Chris to be... uh, on fire before her lure!
"That's Ok," Chris gently brushed Freya's long hair on her cheek and said, "I can teach you."
Then it was Mr. Scott's teaching time.
