All the time, Wendy had been facing the world with endless bravery. She always seemed confident and fearless.
That was the first time that she had confessed her fear to Gavin in a soft voice while in tears.
Gavin suddenly realized he enjoyed the dependence and affection in Wendy's eyes very much.
That in his eyes was interpreted as a strange interest.
"Okay." Seeing the little girl only had him to depend on, Gavin acted like a gentleman. "What do you want? Or what should I do that can help you stop being afraid?"
"I..." Wendy pointed at Gavin's room hesitantly. "I want to live in your place."
"No problem." Gavin agreed to her request without a second thought. "I will switch with you. I'll live in your room."
"... I don't want to switch places with you." Wendy pulled Gavin, stopped for quite a while and finally said slowly, "I want to live with you..."
Faced with fear, dignity was nothing. Wendy decided to have a try!
Gavin narrowed his eyes and stared at Wendy with doubt. "Say it again, what do you want to do with me?"
"Do nothing! Just living together!" Wendy was bashful and angry but she couldn't let her anger out. The only thing she could do was to explain with her face flushing, "I want to live in your place for a night. Just live. Nothing else would happen!"
"But," Gavin scanned her up and down and said, "I'm a normal man anyway. It will be really difficult for me if you just give yourself to me..."
"Nasty!" Wendy kicked hard at Gavin. "What's this 'giving myself to you'? Take your dirty thoughts back into your brain! I just need some guts. If you dare to touch me a bit, I... I will bite you to death!"
But the threat had no effect at all. Gavin wanted to amuse her and asked, "Do I have any advantages if I lend you the courage you need?"
"Of course!" Wendy said, "I am a doctor. If you need to see a doctor in the future, you can come to our hospital and I will introduce a good one who is not only skilled but of good character. I assure you to be cured as soon as possible!"
"..." She was cursing him to be ill?
Gavin bit his teeth and said, "Get your ass onto the bed before I regret my decision!"
It meant... Gavin agreed?
Happiness finally appeared in Wendy's watery eyes. "Where are you going to sleep?"
Gavin's face was fully set on an expression which seemed to mean he was looking at an idiot. "There's only a bed in my room. Where do you suggest I should sleep?"
He had to admit that he wanted to scare Wendy on purpose and see how she would react.
Surprisingly, Wendy didn't get mad or scare him. Instead, she just calmly received the information. "You can sleep in bed. I'll sleep on the couch."
Gavin was really amazed. "You don't call me a bastard or ask to sleep in the bed?"
"...This is your room." Wendy was even more surprised than Gavin. "It's good enough of you to let me live here. How can I rob your bed from you? I'm not that greedy."
Gavin looked up and down at Wendy. She really didn't seem to be pretending. She was actually a kind and good girl. So he was in a good mood and waved his hand. "I was just scaring you. How can I let you sleep on a couch? You can sleep on the bed. I'll get your quilt and pillow and sleep on the floor."
Wendy was a bit surprised, so she asked with a bit of hesitation, "Is it okay?"
"Of course! It is called being a gentleman!"
Gavin got changed into his pajamas and naturally went to Wendy's cabin to get a pillow and a quilt.
Wendy took a look at his handsome figure and said to herself, "His IQ is invisible."
Then, she jumped into Gavin's bed and firmly covered herself with the quilt.
In her memory, she had been alone in her room since birth. She had never expected that the first time staying with another person in a room would be with a man, and it was Gavin.
What's more, she didn't hate it at all.
From a young age, her parents had taught her to be protective and never talk to strangers. Any part of the body covered in clothes couldn't be seen by a stranger. She had been very protective of herself since she was little.
However, not knowing why, her protection mechanism seemed to be of no use in front of Gavin. She seemed to have predicted that he wouldn't hurt her, though he seemed very unconventional and untrustworthy.
Before, she had always disliked Gavin. Why would she feel that he was reliable?
"Fuck!" Wendy pulled the quilt over and covered herself with it. Then she said continuously, "I must have been out of my mind. It must be..."
Gavin carried the quilt back and heard Wendy's vague voice coming from the bed. He frowned and said, "Wendy, are you fighting against a monster?"
"... Yes. I'm eliminating the monster in my mind." Wendy annoyedly uncovered her face and saw Gavin making the bed on the floor.
He seemed very skilled at it. And strangely, he didn't seem to be opposed to sleeping on the floor. After the work was finished, he naturally lay down. Though the floor was hard, he didn't complain about it.
Wendy could say for sure that Chris and Brian would not react like that if faced with that situation.
Maybe Gavin's life wasn't as smooth and as happy as she had thought?
Before Wendy came up with an answer, she heard Gavin's voice. "Turn off the lights. Sleep."
Wendy replied, reaching and pressing the switch beside the bed. Then the whole room was lost in darkness. But, she wasn't afraid at all.
Maybe it was because she knew Gavin was close to her. No matter how unreliable he might have seemed, he would protect her when they really ran into an emergency.
Thinking about it, Wendy's heart was touched. "Gavin, good night."
"..." Gavin suddenly opened his eyes. In the darkness, one couldn't see anything clearly. Therefore, that "good night" sounded very clear.
He had been with many girls and had seriously been in a relationship. But he had never thought about forever, which was to say, he had never treated them with his heart.
The girls who had been with him were all smart and knew what he wanted from the beginning. So none of them were too sticky with him. But they would tell him directly when they wanted something.
He enjoyed that kind of relationship a lot because he did have more money than time. He could buy his girlfriend a purse worth thousands of bucks without hesitating, but he couldn't afford the time to have a meal with them.
So all of the girls would choose to face him wisely and soberly. Therefore, there were girls kissing him or being coquettish with him, but none had ever said "good night" to him.
So when he suddenly heard those words from Wendy, he felt strange.
He felt a bit happy but unsatisfied.
He was not satisfied with Wendy saying good night to him like that. He wanted Wendy to be closer to him. She'd better be by his side and accessible.
Having realized what he was thinking, Gavin was frightened. He hurried to get rid of that odd thought and just replied, "Go to sleep."
Wendy was a bit disappointed, but she didn't dare show it. She gently replied, switching to another posture and closing her eyes.
The whole night, Wendy didn't know how she ended falling asleep.
A few hours later, the morning light drove away the darkness. The sun rose from the east and it was a new day on the island.
In the morning, Joanne was the first one to wake up.
Joanne opened her eyes and used the remote to lift the curtains open. The morning sunlight went in from the windows. The sound of waves was coming to her ears. Besides, she heard Brian's light breathing sound.
That was the morning she was looking forward to in her dream.
Joanne tried to move her body covered in the quilt. Um, it ached a bit.
But... she was the one to be blamed for it. Who told her to mess with Brian?
Then, Joanne turned around.
The longer she was pregnant, the more difficult it was for her to turn around. Brian was quickly woken up by her movement.
Once opening his eyes, Brian almost subconsciously held Joanne. "What's wrong?"
True worry was seen between his eyebrows. He might have been scared too much by the last incident.
Joanne wanted to scare Brian at first. But she didn't want to when she saw his reaction. She carefully touched his frowning forehead and said, "Nothing. Just a bit... um, tired..."
Brian stopped for a minute and quickly understood. He curled his lips and remembered what he had done with Joanne.
He gently covered Joanne's legs in case she would move. Then he lifted his head with one arm and stared at her, "How long have you been planning it?"
"What plan?" Joanne played the fool. "What are you talking about? I don't understand."
Brian decided to discuss carefully with Joanne. "I mean about what happened last night. How long have you been thinking about it? Eh?"
"Think?"
Joanne quickly denied, "I don't want to!" Then her face turned red. "It was you, you... huh..." She became silent.
Brian knew she was shy. But he didn't plan to let her off. "I did what?"
Joanne's bright and beautiful eyes kept rolling.
Brian wouldn't let her go. If the topic went on, she would be in trouble.
She had to summon the unique skill. "I'm a little hungry. Let's get up and find something to eat first. When we're full, we can talk about it."
Brian knew Joanne was using the trick to evade. He checked the time and found it was the proper time to have breakfast. So he didn't continue the discussion.
After they got up and got washed, Brian took Joanne away from the cabin and went to the diner. When they walked by Gavin's cabin, they saw the door opening.
"Gavin is also awake?" Joanne asked while looking at the door warmly. "Gavin, do you want to..."
The rest of the words were swallowed, going back into Joanne's stomach because it wasn't Gavin who had walked out of the cabin. Instead, it was... Wendy!
Joanne blinked for several times and made sure she didn't have an illusion. Then she was totally shocked.
Gavin was being too quick, which was completely out of her expectations!
Wendy saw Joanne and was stunned. "Cousin..."
