Chapter 524 Gavin's Origin

Despite the hot sun in the afternoon, the wedding banquet went on in a lively atmosphere. Gavin continued being Wendy's partner and enjoyed the games with a group of young people.

Dolly sat under the parasol by the swimming pool, chatting with her old friends from Arlington, watching Wendy and Gavin with a smile all the while.

A few moments later, her cellphone rang; it was Mr. Zhou calling.

Mr. Zhou was the private detective Dolly had hired to inquire into Gavin's family background. The other day he had told her about Gavin's adulthood experiences. However, she had wanted to know about Gavin's childhood experiences to check whether or not he was the one she had been looking for.

"Is he calling to tell me that he found out something?" Dolly thought.

She immediately stood up and walked to a corner where no one was around to answer the call. "Hello?"

"Ms. Su, we found out the information about Gavin's childhood," Mr. Zhou said, "Do you want me to send the documents to you right now?"

"Yes!" Dolly said as she contained her excitement, "I'm at the Cityscape Hotel. Tell the waiter that you're coming to visit me. He'll lead you to me."

After hanging up, Dolly told the waiter at the hotel gate about it. Then she asked for a room to wait for Mr. Zhou there.

The waiter led Mr. Zhou to her room after less than 40 minutes. Mr. Zhou handed Dolly a thick packet. "We tried to find out the details about Gavin's childhood through a lot of channels but failed. We were able to find out all about it thanks to a recent loosening of Lambert Group' management. It's all here. Ms. Su, I'm sorry to have made you wait for so long."

"That's fast enough. I was too anxious." Dolly wrote a check to pay the rest of the fee. "Thank you. I'll call you if I need you in the future." With that, she motioned for the waiter to lead Mr. Zhou out.

Mr. Zhou knew that Dolly couldn't wait to know the information in the documents, so he decidedly turned around and left.

Only Dolly was left in the suite.

The memories about her youth flashed in Dolly's mind like vivid scenes.

However, she could never go back to the past, and she had to face reality.

During Wendy's internship at the hospital, Dolly had flown from Australia to America to find the whereabouts of her other child. However, she didn't find out anything after visiting all the orphanages in the United States.

It seemed as if the child had never existed and was simply a figment of her imagination.

She met Gavin while he was standing behind Wendy at the airport, when she set foot in her homeland after decades of separation.

Dolly had thought that she would never see that young and handsome face for the rest of her life. However, it appeared in front of her again while her face had already been marked by wrinkles.

"They look alike!" she thought to herself back then. She was almost 100% sure that Gavin was the child she had been looking for.

She could scarcely restrain herself from rushing to Gavin to inquire about his family background, and to ask him if he was the one she was looking for.

In the end, her reason prevailed over her emotions.

Many people looked alike in the world, so she had to find the evidence that Gavin was the right person.

She finally had the evidence in her hands.

Dolly hoped for Gavin to be the one, because she was afraid that the child would collapse at any time.

However, she also hoped that Gavin wasn't the child, because she could tell that he and Wendy had feelings for each other. She could imagine how Wendy would suffer once she learned the truth.

She had suffered that kind of pain. Wendy was her only daughter, and she didn't want Wendy to share her fate.

However, she had to face reality if Gavin was the child.

Dolly made up her mind. She opened the packet and emptied it to see the documents.

The details about Gavin for the first 20 years of his life were all in the documents hundreds of pages long.

It said that Gavin was taken to an orphanage by a kind-hearted passerby after he was abandoned when it was three months of age.

It also said that Gavin was the naughtiest and the smartest among the kids in the orphanage. The staff there either loved or hated the little leader.

Gavin was sent to a kindergarten near the orphanage when he was four years old. Every day he would return with his schoolbag filled up with all kinds of delicious snacks that he got from the little girls who liked him and shared the snacks with his peers in the orphanage.

It even said that Gavin had his first kiss on his first day in kindergarten.

Upon seeing that, Dolly couldn't help laughing aloud. She continued to read the documents and finally saw the most crucial page.

She saw Gavin's birth date, the time when he was found by a passerby, and his belongings back then on that page.

The passerby found that there was only a note with Gavin with his birth date on it. The note said that his mother was from Arlington, and there were a few words in English on it,"Kind man, could you please take this poor baby to an orphanage?"

Dolly wrote those words on the note in her twenties.

Dolly could tell from the note that Gavin was the child she had been looking for, without even checking his DNA or blood type.

Dolly felt a sharp pain, as if a thick drumstick had struck her heart. And then, what happened over 20 years in the past came to her mind...

The feelings of helplessness and misery overwhelmed her again.

Her nose twitched, and she began to weep.

There were many things in her life that she regretted. The greatest regret of her life was that she had abandoned the three-months-old Gavin on the road.

She had always thought of the child over the past 20-plus years. She had thought of looking for him after she got through her misery. However, she thought that she wouldn't be forgiven, so she delayed it until she lost her courage.

The previous year she received a call from the doctor who had been in charge of Gavin's father. She was told that Gavin might share his father's fate.

In other words, Gavin might suffer what his father had suffered.

Wendy, who adored Gavin, might experience the pain and despair that Dolly had experienced.

Dolly could only wish she could live her life all over again.

If only she could do that, she would firmly stop Wendy from learning medicine, so that Wendy wouldn't work as an exchange doctor in Arlington, and she wouldn't have met Gavin, either.

She would have gone to find Gavin earlier. She would convince him to receive treatment as soon as possible to prevent him from sharing his father's fate, even if he refused to call her mother.

However, it was too late to stop the tragedies that had occurred ever since the cogs of fate began to turn, even though she was rich and powerful.

Dolly sobbed as she held the hundreds of pages to her chest...

Not long after, the guests who had attended the wedding banquet left one by one at sunset, with only a few relatives and friends, as well as the busy staff remaining in the hotel.

Wendy looked all over the garden but didn't find Dolly. She went to Chris and asked, "Cousin, do you know where my mom is?"

Chris was there seeing his guests off. He looked at his watch and said, "I haven't seen her since this afternoon."

"Did she go back?" Wendy said, "It's impossible. She would have told either of us if she wants to leave."

Just then, they saw Dolly walk out of the hotel.

Dolly had washed her face and made herself up again so that others couldn't tell she had cried. She looked at Wendy from a distance and called affectionately, "Wendy, mom is here."

Wendy ran over and grinned at Dolly. "I didn't see you this afternoon. I thought you were back at the hotel."

"I'm going back now." Dolly smiled. "What about you, are you staying or are you leaving with me?"

"Let's go back." Wendy glanced at the empty hotel garden. "There's nothing fun here."

Freya suddenly showed up. "Too many guests got drunk. I can't arrange a driver for you now. Aunt, I'll ask Gavin to drive you back. He's more handsome than the others!"

Wendy thought that Freya did it on purpose, so she said, "Gavin also drank!"

Freya snorted. "We all know Gavin is a heavy drinker. His body has already digested the alcohol he drank at noon. He's able to drive you back!"

Gavin walked over to them, sober and calm. He said with a charming smile, "Auntie, let's go. I'm familiar with the route. I can drive you to the hotel in a short time."

He thought that he had to consider Dolly, his prospective mother-in-law, as his mother since he had decided to woo Wendy.

"In case I can't win Wendy's heart, I can please her mother first. That will be a good start!"

Dolly gazed at Gavin's face, which had only appeared in her mind and dreams in all those years.

She had wondered many times why there were life and death in the world, and why the cruel reality would separate lovers.

At the moment, she figured it out that she wasn't always unlucky.

Mercifully, they had a child, although her beloved had passed away. The child that she had thought impossible to find had always been with her in another way.

Dolly's nose twitched again. She managed to smile while holding back her tears. "Okay, I have confidence in your driving skills. I'm too tired today. Let me treat you to something next time!"

Gavin thought it was a good chance. "Okay!"

Her mother and Gavin's nice chat annoyed Wendy. She yelled, "What about me?"

Dolly said, "Who cares?" With that, she walked toward Gavin's car and got in.

Wendy wanted to cry. "Mom, I wonder if Gavin is your child!"
