"Mom, I wonder if Gavin is your child!"
Dolly was shocked by Wendy's words as she was about to close the door.
She blanked out briefly and then gazed lovingly at Wendy with a helpless look. "I'll have none of that. Be quick and get in the car."
Outside the car-
Gavin raised his wrist and looked at his watch. He said to Wendy in a threatening way, "You will have to take a taxi back if you don't get in my car. But it's rush hour now, and it's hard to get a taxi here."
Wendy knew she had no choice. She calmly looked into Gavin's eyes and said, "Well, you can't scare me!" With that, she strode toward the car fearlessly.
Gavin gazed at Wendy's back while thinking-
"I'll get her..."
"It's just a matter of time."
With that, Gavin followed Wendy with a smile. As he sat in the driver's seat and fastened the seat belt, Dolly noticed the gauze around his hand. She asked with anxiety, "Gavin, did you get hurt?"
Wendy knew very well how Gavin got hurt. She cast a glance of guilt at Gavin.
She could tell that her mother cared about Gavin. She would be blamed if her mother knew that Gavin was stabbed by Zhong Lue because of her.
The resourceful Gavin immediately saw through Wendy. In order to frighten her, he pretended that he was going to tell the truth.
Then he calmly said, "I hurt myself by accident just now. It's just a little cut. It doesn't matter."
Dolly fixed her eyes on Gavin's hand. "You should pay more attention to it. You'll be in trouble if it swells."
Dolly's worried look seemed familiar to Wendy. She thought for a moment and recalled that Dolly looked worried every time she went to visit her when she was hospitalized as a sick child, although Dolly didn't always have time to visit her back then.
"But Gavin simply has a minor cut in his hand. It won't kill him. Why is my mother so worried about him, like she did when I could have died at any time because of a sickly condition as a child?"
Dolly didn't realize that she was going too far. She suddenly said, "By the way, Wendy is a doctor. Wendy, take care of Gavin's wound. Remember to take him to your hospital if he doesn't recover well."
"Mom, you worry too much!" Wendy said with a smile, "I've already checked his wound. It's just a minor cut, and I've bandaged his hand. He will recover soon as long as he doesn't touch water in the following few days. Look, he is as strong as a bull. It's no big deal, is it?"
Dolly was still worried. "You are a doctor. How dare you speak like that? A wound is a wound, and you should be careful with it no matter if it's a minor one or not! Does he need to change the dressing?"
"Yes." Wendy nodded with a proud look. "I bought it for him!"
"That's not enough," Dolly said and then ordered, "Help Gavin change his dressing until he gets better."
"..." Wendy widened her eyes while wondering-"I doubt I'm her child!"
Gavin, their temporary driver, couldn't feel happier at that moment.
He didn't care whether or not Dolly had noticed he had feelings for Wendy. He thought that he had left a good impression on Dolly since she was defending him. He even thought that Dolly was already considering him as her son-in-law.
He thought that he had made a good start in pleasing his prospective mother-in-law, although he hadn't won Wendy's heart yet!
"If I may say so, a bright future is waiting for me, isn't it so?"
Gavin stopped his car in front of the hotel after driving for less than half an hour. He got out of the car and opened the door for Dolly. "Auntie, we're here."
"Thank you." Dolly lovingly looked at Gavin's familiar face as she patted his hand. "Be careful when you drive."
Gavin nodded with a smile like a docile child. "I will."
Wendy knew well that Gavin had never been well-behaved. She didn't get off his car until she saw Dolly walk into the hotel, and then she said to Gavin with a teasing smile, "You're good at playing the good boy part."
Gavin seemed unmoved. He grabbed Wendy's hand and whispered to her, "Remember to help me change my dressing tomorrow morning. Otherwise, I may let slip in front of your mom why I got stabbed."
"Stop it." Wendy knew that Gavin would do what he said. "I get it!" she said while gnashing her teeth.
With that, Wendy walked straight toward the hotel without even looking at Gavin once.
Gavin smiled as he watched Wendy's back. He stood there for a long time after Wendy was out of his sight. Finally, he got in the car and drove back to his apartment.
Dolly felt guilty and helpless as she watched from the room upstairs how Gavin's car left.
Wendy returned to the room only to see Dolly standing still by the window with her bag lying on the bed, and most of the packet had emerged from the bag.
"Mom, you told us that you were tired. Why don't you have a rest?" Wendy bent over to pick up Dolly's bag. "Why did you bring so many documents with you to our cousin's wedding? What are they about?"
Dolly turned around only to find that Wendy was about to take the documents out of the bag.
She lost her countenance in an instant. She walked to her daughter with hurried steps to grab the bag and the documents. "These documents are about your father's businesses."
Wendy had never set foot in business circles, nor was she interested in them, so she wasn't curious about the thick packet. She flopped down upon the bed as she replied with an "oh" and then sprawled on it.
Dolly sighed. "Nobody would marry a lady as casual as you."
"I don't have to get married, do I?" Wendy pretended that she didn't care about marriage at all. "I will have to work and get some on-the-job training at the same time after I get a medical license. I'll be too busy to get married!"
The fact was that she had decided not to get married in the following years if the one she was going to marry wasn't Gavin...
"Wendy," called Dolly.
Wendy turned her head to look at Dolly. "Huh?"
"What do you think of Gavin?" Dolly suddenly asked.
Wendy blanked out. After a while, she asked with embarrassment, "Mom, why would you, say that?"
"No reason." Dolly smiled as if nothing had happened. "These days I've found that he's a nice person. I just want to know what you think of him because you have been with him for a long time."
"Frankly, I'm not always with him." Wendy began to explain, for a reason she didn't understand. "Oh, no, I've known him for a long time. But we're not always together!"
"Really?" Dolly said with an incredulous look, "But he was always protecting you when you toasted. So I thought that you were very familiar with each other."
Wendy almost bit her tongue. "...We are relatively familiar with each other among the eight groomsmen and bridesmaids!"
"OK." Dolly nodded casually. "So I want to ask, what do you think of Gavin?"
Wendy had wanted to complain about him as she usually did, but she thought that it would ruin his image in her mother's mind.
Well, it was clear why she didn't want Gavin to leave a bad impression on her mother.
In the end, Wendy decided to be frank with her. "Gavin seems to be careless, very casual, and always easygoing. In fact, he is a capable man. Otherwise, my cousin-in-law wouldn't have trusted him so much. Besides, he's a principled person who would be horribly angry if someone crosses the line in his mind..."
Dolly replied with an "oh" and then suddenly asked, "Has he ever lost his temper with you?"
"Huh?"
Wendy was lost in her thoughts. Gavin had never lost his temper with her, although he had often tried to frighten her.
"But, will Mom mistake us if I tell her the truth?"
After thinking for a while, Wendy said with a sad face, "I don't dare to annoy him."
Dolly burst into laughter. "You like him, don't you?"
This last question shocked Wendy even more than the former,"What do you think of Gavin?"
She stared at Dolly with her eyes wide open. She couldn't utter a word for a long time, as if an egg were stuck in her throat.
She had been keeping to herself that she adored Gavin, which Joanne might have perceived. She also pretended that she hadn't fallen in love with Gavin, since Joanne didn't say anything about it.
However, Dolly saw through her secret unexpectedly.
How did she feel then?
It was like a little girl who was caught red handed with high heels by her mother who returned home unexpectedly, as soon as she had taken out the most beautiful pair of high heels her mother had on the shoe cabinet and put them on.
She felt so embarrassed from head to toe that she wished there were a crack in the floor for her to burrow into.
Dolly smiled as she gazed at Wendy's flushed face. "Take it easy. You're old enough to get into a relationship. You can love whoever you want. Just tell me the truth."
"The truth?"
"No!"
Wendy subconsciously said, "I don't like him!"
Dolly wasn't surprised by the answer. "Why?"
"Because..." Wendy racked her brains and finally came up with a perfect answer. "He's not my cup of tea."
Dolly had been through the experience, so she knew whether or not Wendy liked Gavin.
She could tell the reason why Wendy had denied her feelings for him.
Gavin was a sophisticated man who was nearly 30 years old of both good appearance and a considerable fortune. A decent, considerate gentleman like him would always fascinate a large group of women even if he did nothing.
In Dolly's eyes, Wendy might think that she wasn't Gavin's type after seeing some of his ex-girlfriends.
She didn't think that Wendy disliked him. Instead, she could tell that Wendy thought Gavin didn't like her.
Dolly thought it wasn't too bad for Wendy to mistake Gavin's feelings. Anyway, she didn't want Wendy to experience what she had experienced.
Dolly was afraid that Wendy, who had grown up carefree, wouldn't be able to bear that kind of unforgettable pain she had once felt.
