The next day.
Wendy woke up at 6:10 a.m., a little earlier than she usually did.
It was her first time getting out of bed as soon as she woke up. After brushing and washing, she bought two breakfasts downstairs and took a taxi to Gavin's apartment.
The city looked tranquil in the early morning, like a baby who had just opened his eyes after a deep sleep. The road was clear, although there was a lot of traffic, which whizzed along in the morning sun as if they were hastening toward great hope.
Wendy could hardly imagine what it would be like when all the roads in the city were filled up with its citizens a few hours later.
"Here we are, Young Lady."
Wendy didn't realize that they had reached Gavin's apartment until she heard the driver's Mandarin Chinese with a local accent. She paid the fare and got out of the car with her two breakfasts.
The apartment was provided with a perfect security system. The gate opened with a beep when Wendy stood in front of it wondering whether she should call Gavin or not.
The security guard looked at Wendy with a smile as he walked out of the apartment lobby. "Hello, Miss Moore."
It occurred to Wendy that she was mistaken for Gavin's girlfriend when she was taken to the apartment after she got drunk at Freya's bachelorette party. She remembered that the security guard told her to directly ask him to open the gate for her if she went there when she left the apartment.
It was the previous morning back then. However, she almost forgot the security guard because she had experienced too much on the previous day.
It surprised her that the security guard still remembered her.
"This way, please." The security guard looked at Wendy, beaming with joy. "I knew you would come again." He handed her an access card and said, "I've been keeping this spare card for Mr. Gavin. Go to him directly."
"Thank you," Wendy took the card and said, "I'll give it back to you when I leave."
"Maybe. Go upstairs, please." The security guard didn't mention the card.
Wendy immediately took the elevator. She called Gavin instead of directly opening his door after she reached his floor.
She thought that she wasn't supposed to enter his house without permission, although she was one of his acquaintances.
She called him four times and rang the doorbell twice, but no one answered.
She couldn't help thinking, "Is Gavin at home? Did he have an accident?"
With that, Wendy became quite demented. She pounded at the door with her palm. "Gavin!"
"..."
"Gavin, hello?"
"..."
"Gavin, answer me, or I'll open the door and let myself in!"
"..."
There was still no reply. Wendy opened the door and entered the house.
The living room, the open-plan kitchen, and the semi-open study... all of it looked as neat as the previous day. It didn't seem that there had been any accidents.
However, she didn't see Gavin.
Wendy called again, "Gavin!?"
Still, there was no response. Wendy looked toward Gavin's room. She walked over and pushed the door open after hesitating for a moment.
As she had expected, Gavin was sleeping in his room like a log.
There was a two-meter-long bed in the bedroom of more than 40 square meters. Gavin was lying on the bed under his quilt, with his left cheek buried in the pillow and his right cheek facing the morning light, which made him look handsome and charming.
She wondered, "Why didn't my call or the doorbell wake him up? Is he out cold?"
Wendy walked over to the bed angrily. "Gavin!" she shouted as she slapped Gavin's quilt.
"..." Gavin lay there still. It seemed that he didn't hear Wendy at all.
Normally, few would sleep so soundly like that. Gavin wasn't supposed to sleep like that either.
Gavin was Brian's assistant and the second-in-command in Lambert Group. He should have been used to opening his eyes and getting himself ready for work immediately after being awakened.
Wendy thought that there had to be something wrong. She bent down to stare at Gavin and called him again, "Gavin, wake up!"
Only then did Gavin hear Wendy. He opened his eyes in a daze.
Gavin felt the same as the first time that he had slept like the dead. He felt as if his life had been empty from the time he fell asleep the previous day to the moment he opened his eyes again.
He thought that he had completely lost consciousness instead of having a sound sleep during that time.
He thought that he had fallen into a more serious trance than he did the last time. The impression he had is that he wouldn't have woken up if Wendy hadn't gone to visit him in the morning.
Owing to his experience last time, Gavin managed to hide his true feelings at leisure. He gave Wendy a teasing smile as he opened his bleary eyes.
Wendy straightened herself up in bewilderment while sizing Gavin up with a confused look, but she found nothing wrong with him.
She thought that Gavin had been sleeping too soundly to hear her.
Gavin winked at Wendy and said, "You're fixing your eyes on me. You must want to kiss me."
"Nonsense! Do you think I'll do something that makes me sick?" Wendy said disdainfully.
Chris narrowed his eyes as if he had seen through Wendy. "I think you will say something against your will."
Wendy was stunned. "Did Gavin see through me?"
"But Gavin has always made fun of me like that. He must be joking."
With that, Wendy felt inexplicably relieved. She glared at Gavin and said, "You have 15 minutes to get dressed. I'll wait for you in the living room!" Then she left the bedroom without looking back.
Gavin looked at Wendy's back with a smile. He slowly got up after she slammed the door. A dull pain in his head almost overwhelmed him as he stood on the floor.
He closed his eyes to relieve himself from that kind of dull pain. He frowned while wondering, "Why am I feeling worse?"
Realizing that Wendy was waiting for him, Gavin stopped thinking about the pain and got himself dressed quickly.
Wendy was sitting on the sofa reading a financial magazine that Gavin had subscribed to. Upon hearing the noise, she subconsciously looked up and saw Gavin walk out of his room.
He had removed his loose, comfortable pajamas and put on a tailored white shirt matched with a pair of black trousers. The rolled-up sleeves of the shirt made him look both relaxed and elegant.
Wendy wondered, "Is it because Gavin is good-looking, and he looks good no matter what he wears that I like him?"
"How shallow I am!"
However, she still adored him very much!
"Come here and take a seat," Wendy said with a serious face to hide her true feelings.
Gavin obediently walked over and sat on the sofa, leaving about 30 cm between Wendy and him, then he reached out his injured hand to her.
Wendy frowned as she cut off the bandage around Gavin's hand to check his wound. She took a closer look at the bandage and found that it had been stained with a lot of blood.
"What's wrong?" Gavin noticed Wendy's strange look. He said, "I followed your advice and I didn't touch water."
"I know that." Wendy pointed at the blood in the bandage. "But, what did you do after you came home? Your wound bled again. Didn't you feel it?"
"It was getting dark when I came home. What do you think I could do?" Gavin looked innocent.
Wendy sized Gavin up. "You must have done something that you can only do when it's dark."
Gavin was so angry that he let out a laugh. "Who told you such nonsense?"
"I always knew that!" Wendy dipped a cotton ball in the medicine and dabbed at Gavin's wound. "Keep your hands still in the next few days. Or it will take you a long time to recover if your wound keeps opening."
Gavin raised his eyebrows. "Okay, I will. My body is at your disposal!"
Wendy was in a daze for a while before she got Gavin's point. She kicked Gavin with a blush on her face and pressed the cotton ball hard onto his wound. "No more nonsense! Or you'll suffer for it in half a month!"
Gavin knew that Wendy would do what she said. He rested his chin on his hand while silently watching Wendy disinfect his wound and change his dressing.
He had thought that Wendy would be embarrassed. He gazed at her but found that she was calm. He couldn't help but ask, "Can't you notice that I'm watching you?"
"I do," Wendy said without looking up, "What's so strange about it? People like watching beauties."
"..." Gavin thought to himself, "She's as narcissistic as I am."
Wendy was still calm after flattering herself. She changed his dressing and bound up Gavin's wound with the gauze. In the end, she skillfully made a bowknot. "It's done. Don't touch water. Keep your hands still. It'll get better in the next two days. By the way, remember to change the dressing tonight."
"Are you going to help me with it?" Gavin asked.
"I can't come," said Wendy.
"Why?" Gavin gazed at Wendy and burst into laughter. "Are you worried that I'll do something to you if you come at night?"
"How dare you!" Wendy pretended to beat Gavin but put down her hand within seconds. "I don't think you're brave enough to do that even if you want to! It's my first night shift tonight. I can't leave the hospital."
"Then I'll go to the hospital to visit you." Gavin asked, "Is that OK?"
"That's fine with me." After a pause, Wendy said, "But I got a question for you."
Gavin didn't think that he would be bewildered by any of Wendy's questions, so he quickly said, "Go ahead."
"I called you and rang the doorbell many times this morning. I also called you many times after I entered your house, but you didn't respond," Wendy asked, "Didn't you hear me? I never thought someone would sleep so deeply."
"..."
Gavin realized that there was something wrong with him.
He hadn't expected that he would be stumped by Wendy's question.
