Chapter 529 I Think You Are Like an Angel

Gavin was sure that Wendy would take him to the hospital if he told her the truth.

He didn't want Wendy to know what was going on with his body before he could figure it out himself.

He didn't think it was selfish of him to do that because he had the responsibility to do it.

However, he realized that it wasn't easy to fool her when he noticed Wendy's incredulous look.

To his relief, he had a perfect excuse.

"I drank too much yesterday." Gavin kneaded his temples as if he had a headache. "It's been a long time since I had a good sleep like just now."

"Sure enough, he slept too deeply," Wendy thought to herself. Then she said, "Gavin, you were sleeping like a log."

Gavin didn't mind it at all. He rested his chin on his hand while asking Wendy, "Then what do you look like?"

She would be casting herself as something else other than a person no matter what she answered.

Wendy was smart enough to see through his trick. She said with a serious look, "As a patient, you should answer the doctor's questions, not to question the doctor. What if I tell you that doctors are like angels?"

Gavin nodded with a serious look after gazing at Wendy for a while. "You said it. You're an angel!"

"..." Wendy did a double-take when she heard Gavin's praise since she had been used to his banters. However, she subconsciously sidetracked the issue. "By the way, did strain yourself with exercise or felt your wound bleeding again after you came home yesterday?"

"Dr. Moore, I swear I didn't." After a pause, Gavin said, "Anyway, it's not a nick. So it's normal for it to bleed, isn't it?"

"The human body has a blood coagulation system. You bled abnormally!" Wendy looked at Gavin with conviction. "You must have hurt your wound by accident, but you didn't notice. Just be careful in the next few days. I don't want to come and change your dressing every day..."

Gavin looked at his injured hand. "That reminds me..."

He thought that he would often have the chance to see Wendy if he got hurt from time to time.

Wendy seemed to have seen through Gavin. She asked with disbelief, "What?"

Gavin gave a meaningful smile. "Nothing."

Wendy decided not to talk to Gavin anymore. She tidied away the medications and stood up. "I brought you some breakfast. Help yourself."

Gavin was glad that Wendy had brought him breakfast. He immediately stood up and followed Wendy to the dining room.

Wendy had bought some common breakfast food: carefully-stewed congee, aromatic fried eggs, deep-fried dough sticks that were golden and crispy, and two cups of soybean milk.

Gavin was surprised. "Are you going to eat this?"

Gavin had never eaten a "humble meal" like that for breakfast.

He always had western-style breakfasts when he was in America. He used to have breakfasts at certain restaurants after returning from abroad. His assistant would have his breakfasts sent to his office when he was too busy to eat out. What he chose was far from frugal, although it wasn't too luxurious.

Gavin wondered why Wendy, a young lady who grew up in a rich family, would have that for breakfast.

"What's the matter?" Wendy looked at Gavin, puzzled. "I usually eat this in the morning."

Gavin narrowed his eyes and sized Wendy up. "I didn't expect that it would be this easy to feed you."

She thought to herself, "To feed me? Do my meals have anything to do with him?"

Wendy suddenly realized something. "I forgot that you never eat these for breakfast."

"Who told you that?" Gavin grabbed the congee and took a sip. "We used to have only two slices of dry toast for breakfast when the orphanage was short of funds. If only we had enjoyed such a big meal for breakfast back then..."

It was the first time that Gavin had talked about his past in front of Wendy.

Wendy opened her mouth, wondering if she should ask Gavin about his experience in the orphanage because she wanted to know more about his past.

"But Gavin was abandoned. Those days in the orphanage... must be traumatic for him, right?

"So he keeps going toward his goal without ever looking back."

Wendy finally decided not to ask him anything. She inserted a straw into the soybean milk and pushed the disposable cup in front of Gavin. "It tastes mellow. It's the most delicious soybean milk I've ever had. Try it."

Gavin took a sip and nodded. "You have good taste."

Wendy said with a broad smile, "You said it!" Then she suddenly let out a cry as it occurred to her that Miley would have dinner with Brian that night.

She forgot to tell Freya about it!

It was too late to tell her since she was flying to Europe for her honeymoon that day.

Gavin laid down his spoon and chopsticks when he noticed the serious look on Wendy's face. "What's wrong?"

Wendy looked up at Gavin and then looked away with a guilty conscience. "Nothing..." She thought that she shouldn't tell Gavin that she had kept an eye on Miley, otherwise Brian would also know about it.

In that case, it would harm the relationship between Brian and Joanne.

Gavin was sensitive enough to see through Wendy. He recalled the day when he saw Wendy watching Miley.

He wanted to know what Wendy had found out and how she had mistaken Brian and Miley.

The city came to life when the two finished their breakfast.

"Where are you going?" Gavin asked Wendy as he took his documents to leave for work.

"I'm going home to have some rest," Wendy said, "or I'll be very sleepy during my night shift today."

Gavin nodded. "I'll drive you home."

"You'll have to take a lot of detours if you go to your company after driving me home." Wendy asked, "Don't you fear that you'll be late?"

"I do fear. But-" Gavin said with a mysterious smile, "Your cousin-in-law will forgive me."

Brian had been late for work from time to time when he married Joanne. He had also gone off work on time for the first time, which shocked half the staff in his company.

That was the reason why Gavin believed that Brian would forgive him if he was late for work because of staying with Wendy.

Wendy didn't get Gavin's point at all. She thought that Brian wouldn't blame him for her sake.

She said with a proud look, "Gavin, I'm your lucky star!"

Gavin couldn't help but touch Wendy's head. "You're right."

He would have treated life as merely playing games if Wendy hadn't come into his life.

He would have never taken his life seriously, nor would he want to get married, to father children, or to start a family like Brian and Chris did.

Therefore, Wendy was his lucky star.

Wendy felt a great sense of achievement because of Gavin's recognition. She even thought that the scenery on her way home looked more beautiful than ever.

Wendy changed her clothes and lay on the bed in a good mood after she got home. She didn't fall asleep until she tossed and turned under her quilt for a long time.

Dolly's call wakened her at noon.

"You don't have to go to work during the day, do you?" Dolly said, "Come to the hotel and have lunch with me."

"Oh," said Wendy, "You'll have to wait for a while. I haven't gotten up yet."

"My girl, you'd better keep regular hours," Dolly stopped scolding and said in a gentle voice, "Get dolled up before you come to me. As a lady, you shouldn't wear any T-shirts or jeans all day."

Wendy yawned. She got out of bed and put on her T-shirt and jeans as she said "all right." Then she went downstairs and called a taxi to Dolly's hotel.

Wendy received Dolly's message that she was in a private room on the fourth floor as soon as she reached the restaurant.

Wendy pushed the door open and entered as soon as she found the private room, only to find that Dolly wasn't alone.

There was a gracefully dressed lady whose age was around Dolly's in the room. Connell was with them.

Wendy was stunned-"What on earth happened?"

"My girl, why are you standing at the door?" Dolly waved at Wendy. "Come in."

Wendy remembered that Dolly had asked her to dress herself up. She realized what was going on when she saw Connell. She walked into the private room with a forced smile. "Mom."

"Get seated." Dolly took Wendy's hand to make her sit down. Then she said, "This is Auntie Zhou. This is her youngest son, Connell."

Connell said with a smile, "Auntie Su, we know each other."

Dolly and Ms. Zhou were surprised. Dolly finally said, "You've known each other for a long time. Why didn't you tell us about it? Your mom and I were thinking about how the two of you could meet since yesterday!"

Dolly and Ms. Zhou both laughed. Connell also smiled. However, that couldn't make Wendy smile.

She had never expected that her blind date would be Connell...

"damn! Why isn't it a more handsome man?"

Mrs. Helen asked, "Wendy, how did you get to know Connell?"

Only then did Wendy realize that she should greet Mrs. Helen first. "Auntie Zhou, I met him at a party before my cousin's wedding."

"I see." Ms. Zhou stood up with her bag in hand. "Then we don't need to introduce you. Take your time and have a nice talk here. Your mom and I are going to the beauty salon."

Dolly patted Wendy's hand with a smile, then she picked up her bag and left.

Wendy immediately changed her posture and looked at Connell as soon as the door closed, "So you're the son of my mom's friend."

"You should be glad that it's me." Connell took off his suit jacket. "But how come you're being forced to have a blind date? Don't you dare to say that you like Gavin?"

Wendy waved her chopsticks in the air and gestured for Connell to keep quiet. "The wall has ears!"

Connell said leisurely, "The sound insulation here is very good."

Wendy,"..."

Connell went on to say, "My mom wants me to have a relationship with you."

Wendy was stunned because she hadn't expected Connell to be so frank. "I want you to know that you'd better not listen to Auntie Zhou."

Connell smiled. "I know that you like Gavin. By the way... maybe you'll fall in love with me if I give it a try."

Wendy also wanted to fall in love with someone else, which she knew was impossible.

She would grin whenever she thought of Gavin because she thought that no one was better than him, and she had even dreamed of marrying Gavin during those days.

In her mind, Gavin had already become irreplaceable.
