Connell could tell from Wendy's expression that it was impossible for him to start a relationship with her in a short period.
The fact was that Wendy would never fall in love with him until he took steps to make her stop loving Gavin, even though he was quite handsome and brilliant.
After thinking for a while, Connell sent a message to Gavin.
After that, Connell looked up and saw Wendy gulping her food.
"Well, she doesn't like me."
"Otherwise she wouldn't gobble her food like that in front of the person she likes, would she?"
After a while, Wendy felt no longer hungry and was prepared to explain to him. "Connell, how about telling our moms that we want to start off as friends?"
Connell said with an innocent smile, "But my mom asked me to woo you."
Wendy was sure that Connell was making fun of her on purpose because she thought that a person like him would never love her.
She put her palms together with sincerity and shook them in front of Connell, "Young Master Wesley, Master Wesley, I beg you. Stop teasing me!"
She frowned with anxiety, looking rather pathetic.
Connell's heart melted for no reason when he saw Wendy like that.
He sighed. "My mother isn't that easy to fool."
"Whatever, it's your business!" Wendy sounded like a wayward child. "Anyway, my mother is easy to fool!"
Connell tutted and shook his head. "Miss Moore, you can't say that. You said we should fool our mothers, so I'm your ally. But you hurt my feelings. Don't you want to join hands with me?"
Wendy thought that Connell's words did make sense. She nodded and said, "How about this? We'll say that we're very interested in each other, but we didn't fall in love with each other, so we plan to get to know each other before we start a relationship!"
Connell looked at Wendy with a teasing smile. "But I fell in love with you when I met you for the second time."
"Stop talking nonsense!" Wendy very nearly hit Connell with the teacup. "I mean it!"
Connell sighed again as his shoulders dropped. "Well then, that's a deal. But I have to meet you from time to time in case our moms see through us. Maybe you'll fall in love with me in the future."
Young Master Wesley's inborn narcissism was completely in harmony with the world.
Wendy stood up and left without looking back after finishing the steamed scallops with vermicelli made from bean starch in her bowl.
Young Master Wesley's narcissism had nothing to do with her.
Connell gazed at Wendy's back, lost in his thoughts.
He found it ironic that he had fallen for Wendy.
He was able to annoy the one who had won Wendy's heart, although he didn't win her heart.
Connell couldn't help imagining the face Gavin would make after reading his text message.
While Gavin was at his company having lunch with several senior executives in a private room of the cafeteria and discussing a new project, he picked up his cellphone to check it out as soon as he heard the incoming message sound, thinking that it had something to do with work.
-The text message went like this: Wendy's mother and my mother are friends. They hope that I can fall in love with Wendy. She's having a blind date with me, and we're having lunch together. I'll tell my mother and Auntie Su that I have a good impression of Wendy. They'll encourage me to pursue her.
-Special Assistant Gavin, I want a fair competition with you.
Gavin slapped his cellphone down on the table at the end of the text message.
The senior executives of the company that were having lunch at the same table looked over and saw a serious look on Gavin's handsome face.
The CFO asked, "Gavin, what's wrong?"
"Yeah, we haven't seen your serious face for a long time." The deputy manager asked, "Could it be that you were dumped by some girl?"
"..." Gavin didn't want to answer. At that moment, he felt as if he had indeed been dumped by Wendy.
"What a damned girl! She told me that she wouldn't help me change my dressing tonight. How come she has time to have a blind date with Connell during the day?"
"By the way, didn't she know Connell already? What's the blind date about?"
The more Gavin thought about it, the angrier he felt. He picked up his cellphone and walked to the balcony outside the cafeteria. The deputy manager followed him out of curiosity, to see what was going on.
However, Gavin had always been too proud to let others see how embarrassed he was. He closed the door with his feet to block the deputy manager in the private room, and then he called Wendy.
Wendy was waiting for a taxi when her cellphone rang.
Her heart raced as she looked at the caller ID.
"Why is Gavin calling me? What's going on with him?" she thought.
To hold back her nervousness and excitement, Wendy didn't answer the call until she got in the taxi. "Gavin?"
"It's me." Gavin jealously asked, "Where are you?"
Wendy felt that Gavin's voice sounded strange, but she didn't think too much. She looked at the scenery outside the window that was left behind by the taxi. "I went out at noon. I'm on the way back home."
Gavin and Brian shared one thing in common: they could stay calm under all circumstances.
For example, he could tell from Wendy's tone that she was low-spirited, although he was jealous at that moment. He thought that she hadn't spent much time on the blind date with Connell since it was just past noon.
Gavin asked with a gentler tone, "Why are you going back so early?"
Wendy thought it was strange for Gavin to ask like that. "Do you know that I'm outside, or... do you know that I had a blind date with Connell?"
"I know both." Gavin asked, "How did it feel? Is Connell still your cup of tea?"
Wendy had once told Gavin that Connell was her type when she was angry.
The truth was the complete opposite.
However, Wendy didn't want to tell him the truth to embarrass herself. She thought for a while and said, "I don't like blind dates! I'm not full at all. I'm still hungry."
Gavin asked with a smile, "Where are you going now?"
Wendy looked at the street sign as the taxi stopped at the traffic lights. "I'm at the intersection of Macao Road and Huachang Road."
"Ask the driver to pull over. Wait for me there." With that, Gavin hung up.
Wendy opened her mouth as if to ask one more question.
However, she paid the driver and got off to wait for Gavin at the curb.
She was willing to wait for him as long as he went to her, no matter why Gavin did that or what he wanted to do.
That was what she thought.
While Gavin, who was 10 kilometers away from her, left the company and drove straight toward Macao Road as quickly as he could.
He drove at top speed. He saw Wendy standing by the roadside when he was about to reach the intersection.
Wendy was in her usual white T-shirt, a pair of vintage jeans and a pair of white leisure shoes with a white leather backpack over her shoulder, looking as placid as most of the ordinary girls in the city.
Gavin came up with an idea as he slowed down.
He realized that there was no ideal lover. The one a man fell in love with had never turned out to be his dream girl.
For example, Wendy wasn't the sort of person he liked.
However, Wendy was the one he had fallen in love with.
Wendy had been standing under a tree for over 10 minutes, and her forehead kept sweating because of the midday sun.
A white car stopped in front of her when she was wondering when Gavin would arrive. He noticed the sweat on Wendy's forehead as soon as he got off the driver's seat. He looked at Wendy in surprise. "Why aren't you waiting for me at a cooler place?"
"..."
Wendy didn't know what to say for a moment.
She waited for him there because Gavin had asked her to do that. She thought that he wouldn't find her if she were at a cooler place.
She also thought that it would be embarrassing to tell him the truth.
Wendy racked her brains and finally came up with a perfect excuse, "I don't feel like walking!"
Gavin believed what she said. He opened the passenger's door helplessly and said, "Get in the car."
It was cool inside. Wendy let out a long sigh of relief as soon as she got in the car. "Where are we going?" she asked while fastening the seat belt.
Gavin started the car and drove on. "You said you were hungry, didn't you? I'll take you to lunch."
Wendy hadn't expected that Gavin would keep her complaint in mind. She turned her head in surprise and said, "I thought you wanted to talk to me about something very important."
It meant a lot to Gavin whether Wendy was hungry or not.
However, he thought it could be either that Wendy would be scared or that she wouldn't believe his words if he told her how he felt.
Gavin simply said, "You bought me breakfast. So I'll treat you to lunch. What do you think? What do you want to eat?"
"So you just don't want to owe me a favor, do you?" Wendy asked while holding back her disappointment.
Gavin snorted as he glanced at Wendy. "You owe me a lot of favors since we met. I just don't want you to die of hunger. In that case, no one will help me change my dressing. That would be too bad."
"..." Wendy was struck dumb as if her heart had stopped beating.
In the end, Wendy came up with a good idea-she decided to play a trick on him.
She mentioned a Michelin five-star restaurant and said, "I want to eat steak there!"
Gavin was a frequent visitor to the restaurant. He immediately called there to make a reservation and order the dishes.
He had never been stumped by a matter like that.
It would be a huge mistake if Wendy wanted to make things difficult for him in terms of money.
He lacked for nothing, especially money.
What did he want?
All he wanted was a girlfriend like Wendy.
