Chapter 585 Gavin's Foresight

Two hours later, Gavin received a phone call.

"There is some progress in the things that you asked me to investigate." The person on the other side of the phone was somewhat puzzled. "However, Dolly seems to have nothing to do with you. Why do you suddenly want to look into her background?"

"You just need to tell me what you've found." Gavin's voice was distant and threatening. "Don't ask things that you're not supposed to."

"OK." The man on the other side put on a professional tone. "I found that after Winfred passed away, Dolly chose to abandon their child because she had serious depression. She didn't have the ability to raise a newborn child at all. But the most important reason was that her brother wanted to compete with her for the raising rights of the child and thus he could threaten her with the child."

Gavin pressed his temple. "I know all of this. Tell me something that I don't know."

"... After abandoning the child, Dolly's depression didn't get better and it became even worse. Dolly's then psychologist vaguely told me that after sending the child away, Dolly had been having nightmares and dreamed that the little boy came back to find her and told her that he would never forgive her. That is the main reason why Dolly's depression couldn't be cured."

Gavin slightly frowned. "What else?"

"What's more, even though she gave up her child, Steven still didn't let her go. At that time, Dolly bore a huge debt and received countless calls asking for money every day. Her spirit was on the verge of breaking down. Steven proposed that as long as Dolly came back to the country with him and hid the fact that she gave birth to a child, he would pay the money back for Dolly. Now you should have guessed it... Steven was the one who conducted the debt pursuit behind Dolly's back."

Two words, covered with ice, jumped out of Gavin's thin lips. "So despicable."

"Do you mean Steven?" The person on the other side of the phone made a sound of "tsk-tsk". "He has done even more despicable actions. Do you want to know?"

"Tell me!"

"Dolly had already cut off relationships with Steven at that time. So she definitely would not agree to Steven's requests. Later, the hospital filed a lawsuit against Dolly and forced Dolly to find a job even in depression. However, Steven secretly created obstacles during the process, and Dolly could not find a suitable job at all."

"..." Gavin kept silent and didn't talk.

"Finally, it was the doctor who was in charge of Winfred's illness who introduced Dolly to be a waitress in a cafe. I checked and found that the salary was not high, and 90% of it was used by Dolly to pay off the debts. But the money was only a drop in the bucket compared to the huge debt. Along with depression, Dolly led a very bad life during that time."

Gavin's hands clenched into a fist as he kept silent. Because he clenched too tightly, his finger joints became whiter and whiter. "What happened in the end?"

"Such terrible days lasted for about half a year, then something strange happened."

"What is it?" Gavin asked.

"Dolly suddenly got together with a man. The man was called Conor. He was from Glasgow and was an overseas student like Dolly. After Dolly got together with him, not only did he pay off the debt for Dolly, but he also helped Dolly to solve the troubles caused by Steven. After that, he took Dolly to Australia and they had a daughter, whose name was Wendy."

Gavin was silent for a moment before he asked, "How did she end up with Conor?"

"I don't know. I couldn't find out." The person on the other end of the line paused for a moment and then said, "But under such circumstances, the purpose of Dolly being with Conor is obvious. He had money and could help her solve the difficulties in front of her! And later, in Dolly's circle, everyone said it like that as well. Everyone said that she betrayed Winfred and took advantage of Conor's affection..."

"Enough!" Gavin suddenly snapped, "You don't know what happened to her. So don't speculate without permission!"

"..." The person at the other end seemed to be scared by Gavin. After a long while, he weakly asked, "Special Assistant Gavin, are you alright?"

Only then did Gavin realize that his reaction was too aggressive. He pressed on his temple again. "I'm sorry."

"Oh, it doesn't matter. However, does Mr. Brian know that you are investigating this?"

"It's my personal affair. He doesn't know." Gavin added, "If he doesn't ask then you don't have to mention it to him."

In fact, Brian knew about his relationship with Dolly, so it was not a big deal to let him know that he was investigating Dolly.

However, those few months should have been the most difficult period in Dolly's life. He didn't want too many people to know.

"I see. That's all for now. I've sent you an email if you want more details. You can read it later."

"Thank you." Gavin hung up the phone, and a notification of receiving an email jumped out from the lower right corner of the screen. The message was sent from the person who had just spoken with him.

He knew what was in the email and he didn't have the courage to read it at all.

Gavin turned off the phone and thought for a while. Then he went to the balcony of the living room for a smoke.

Today, when he was having his tests, Henry had specially told him not to smoke and to drink as little as he could.

However, sometimes, other than the smoke that could seep into his lung and heart, there was nothing else that could pull him back from the dark abyss.

Especially after knowing that there was no possibility between Wendy and himself.

He only needed the time it took to smoke a cigarette, and after that, he would be able to regain his clear-headed and ready-to-fight state.

Two days later, all Gavin's test results came out and he went straight to the hospital after work.

This time, he didn't meet Dolly.

It was because Gavin had already asked Henry not to immediately tell Dolly about the results that came out.

Facing the thick pile of test reports, Gavin did not understand and was also not interested in reading them. He directly asked Henry, "How much time do I have?"

"At present, the situation is still fairly optimistic and we can't see any obvious signs of abnormalities in your body." Henry adjusted his glasses and continued, "Also, your physical health is much better than your father's. Moreover, more than twenty years have passed and we no longer know nothing about this illness. Do you understand what I mean? You have a good chance of being cured. So, don't be pessimistic."

Gavin nodded. "Then I'll leave the rest to you."

"You're too polite." Just as he finished speaking, the phone next to the computer rang. He motioned for Gavin to look at the screen

"Fay."

It was Dolly's English name.

"She must be calling to ask about the test results from you," Gavin said. "Since I'm fine, tell her the truth. I'll go first."

After saying that, Gavin left Henry's office and went to the director's office to talk about something.

He came to the hospital in the name of dealing with business. If he went back without doing anything then Brian would be suspicious after a few times.

There were too many things that were complicated at the moment, and the most important thing was that Joanne's expected delivery date was close. So he would hide his own matter for as long as he could.

When Gavin arrived at the director's office, Henry was still talking to Dolly on the phone.

Hearing that Gavin's situation was still fairly optimistic, Dolly let out a sigh of relief and asked, "Henry, does Gavin know the result?"

Henry thought for a moment. Then, he helped Gavin tell a lie. "He doesn't know them yet. I was just about to contact him and have him come to the hospital."

"Do you need me to come over there?" Dolly sounded quite dubious.

Henry smiled and replied, "I don't think you need to make a special trip here. Gavin is an adult now and it's not bad news that he is going to face. He should be able to accept it by himself."

Dolly still wanted to say something, but right at the moment, the doorbell rang. She looked through the peep hole and saw Wendy standing outside the door.

Now she couldn't go to the hospital even if she wanted to.

She hurriedly said goodbye to Henry and hung up the phone. She opened the door and said, "Wendy, why didn't you say that you were coming over? What if I was not at the hotel?"

"I just came by after work." Wendy shrugged. "It doesn't matter if you aren't here. I could have slept and waited for you to come back."

Dolly smiled helplessly and said, "Have you eaten yet? If not, let's eat together?"

Wendy answered with a "hmm" and said, "I have something to tell you during dinner."

Dolly had already guessed what Wendy would say to her. When she went to the restaurant to order, Wendy did mention the matter of the postgraduate entrance examination to her. The young girl's face was serious and stubborn, as if to tell her that even if she objected, the decision would not be changed. She would definitely take the postgraduate entrance examination.

Dolly picked up a piece of beef for Wendy and said, "Go ahead. No matter which the school you want to enter or where it is, at home or abroad, or back in Australia. Your father and I will always support you."

In order to study medicine, Wendy once had had a big fight with Dolly.

Therefore, before she proposed the postgraduate entrance exam this time, she had been ready to fight against Dolly for a long time.

However, Dolly agreed to her request so easily.

Wendy opened her eyes wide and did not hide her surprise, "Mom, you, you...?"

"Do you think that I would still object?" Dolly didn't answer but asked instead, "Wendy, if Mom had opposed, would you have given up the postgraduate entrance examination?"

Wendy shook her head. "I don't think so. I've already decided to take the postgraduate entrance exam and I've already started reviewing."

"That's right." Dolly said, "Since it's useless for me to object then why do I need to oppose you? Anyway, you are going to graduate from your bachelor's degree. It's better to let you continue to study this. What's more, nothing is more valuable than your interests."

Wendy didn't feel very happy. On the contrary, she was very puzzled. "Mom, can I ask you, why did you suddenly change your mind?"

"Because I have thought through some things." Dolly looked at Wendy and slowly said, "Wendy, I don't want you to hate me any more in the future." She had broken up Gavin and Wendy, which had already caused great harm to Wendy. She did not want to do anything that would make Wendy sadder.

Wendy shook her head and pursed her lips. "Mom, in fact, I have never blamed you. If you didn't agree to me studying medicine then there must be a reason for you. Besides, I didn't listen to you earlier, so we are even."

Dolly smiled and said, "Little girl."

Hearing these two words, Wendy was a little touched.

When in Australia, unless she was at home, she spoke English all the time. After coming to Arlington, she and her classmates mostly called each other with names.

Only Gavin would call her 'little girl'.

Little girl, naughty girl, stupid girl...

Later, when she searched on the Internet, she found out that these two words had the meaning of spoiling and protecting, just like an elder brother would say to his younger sister.

Now that she thought about it, Gavin was indeed far-sighted. He had treated her like his younger sister from the very start!
