Chapter 634 Hope For The Best And Prepare For The Worst (1)

After drinking the milk, the two little guys fell asleep.

Martha asked Brian and Joanne to go back to the room to rest and said, "Sister Wu and I will take care of Aiden and Romy. You can rest assured."

Indeed, there was nothing to worry about. Joanne pulled Brian back to the master bedroom next door.

Thanks to the proper rest after the operation, the incision on Joanne's lower abdomen was no longer painful, and some of her daily activities were no longer influenced by it.

She went to the dressing room and took out a set of men's pajamas. When she handed them to Brian, she asked, "Are those pediatrics experts who Gavin has contacted for Romy going to arrive tomorrow?"

"Yeah." Brian took the clothes. "What's wrong?"

Joanne seemed to be lost in thought. "I remember you saying that Gavin must have found the most authoritative experts, and they would find a way to cure the disease of Romy."

"Of course." Brian touched Joanne's head. "So, we just need to take good care of Romy. Leave the rest to the doctors."

Joanne pursed her lips and smiled. "In other words, we don't have to worry!"

Brian heard it very clearly that Joanne emphasized the word "we".

He stared at Joanne, and after a while, he realized that she was comforting him in a roundabout way.

Somehow she found that he was also worried about Xiang Yi's condition.

Brian raised the corner of his mouth and kissed Joanne on her forehead. After a pause, he let go of her and walked to the bathroom.

Looking at Brian's back, Joanne breathed a sigh of relief and sat down beside the bed.

She had nothing else to ask for. She only hoped that the doctors who came from afar could cure the asthma of Romy.

However, if even the experts couldn't do anything about it, then asthma passed down from the older generation was probably a challenge that fate had given to Romy.

In any case, she and Brian would accompany Romy to face this challenge.

Joanne was full of hope, but at the same time, she convinced herself to accept the worst result.

At the same time, Gavin and Dolly were on their way back to the center of the city.

The white Land Rover sped along the highway. Inside the car, it was so quiet that even the sound of breathing could be heard clearly. It was a little awkward.

Gavin didn't seem to notice the embarrassment-

He put his long and strong hands on the steering wheel, and his dark eyes looked straight ahead. There was no obvious emotion on his handsome face, and he looked rather natural.

In the end, Dolly broke the silence. "Gavin, just now...I'm sorry."

Gavin asked lightly, "What do you mean by 'just now'?"

"It's about me cooking." Dolly looked apologetic. "I'm sorry. It was too abrupt."

"... You don't need to apologize to me." Gavin's tone became more indifferent as if he was talking about something that had nothing to do with him. "It's your freedom to cook. I can't interfere with your freedom."

This statement was impeccable, but it also pulled the distance between him and Dolly apart invisibly, making them seem particularly unfamiliar.

However, they were mother and son.

Dolly was silent for a long time before she slowly said, "Your father had taught me this dish."

"..." Gavin was stunned. Then he realized that he was still driving and forced himself to focus, but his attention had been unconsciously shifted to Dolly's voice.

Dolly went on to say, "When I first arrived in the United States, I was not used to the diet there. When I was with your father, I accidentally found that he had good cooking skills. Especially this steamed fish, its taste even won our American classmates' favor."

"..."

"Later, your father told me about the specific procedures, but I didn't try it even once because of his presence. I just ate the fish he cooked for me again and again. After he left, I haven't eaten steamed fish for many years."

"..."

"Until the day of my 30th birthday, I dreamed of your father celebrating the first birthday with me. In the dream, at the dining table, the main dish was the steamed fish that he often cooked for me. When I woke up, I tried many times to cook the steamed fish according to the steps taught by your father, and finally managed to cook the steamed fish just like the one made by your father."

"..." Gavin's lips opened, but in the end, he didn't say anything.

"Gavin, I just want you to have a try. If you think it's too abrupt, just take it as your father's work, okay?"

Gavin wanted to ask, "Since Dolly can't forget her father, why can she still be with another person for so many years?"

At first, she was with Conor in order to pay off the debt and avoid being suppressed by Steven.

But what happened later?

Later on, she had her own career and could completely dominate her life. Why was she still with Conor?

However, if they hadn't been together, Wendy wouldn't exist.

Thinking of Wendy, Gavin's doubts and resentment disappeared, and his tone gradually became warm.

"If there's a chance, you can cook it for me alone next time. It was too sudden today, so I didn't have time to taste it carefully."

After Dolly confirmed it several times, she finally believed that she had heard it correctly. Gavin was really willing to taste the steamed fish she cooked again.

"Okay!" Dolly was so excited that her calm voice trembled. "As long as you have time, I can cook at any time!"

Many years ago, she had no choice but to give up Gavin. It was not until now that she had an opportunity to make up for it.

Not to mention that Gavin just wanted to taste the steamed fish she made, even if he wanted everything from her, she would be willing to give.

The awkwardness and stiffness in the car finally dissipated. After a while, Dolly arrived at the hotel where she lived.

Dolly picked up her bag and told Gavin, "Be careful on the way back."

Gavin didn't answer. Instead, he asked, "When will it be convenient for you? I have something to tell you."

"What's the matter?" Dolly said, "If it's not too complicated, let's talk about it now. Let's go to the caf downstairs at the hotel."

The coffee shop was enormous, and it was decorated with a combination of leisure and business style. It was a good place to kill time with pleasing jazz music and warm white lights.

After staying in the hotel, Dolly would order a cup of coffee every morning. The waiter in the restaurant had known her for a long time. He greeted her familiarly and asked, "Miss. Su, what do you want to drink today?"

Considering that it was getting late, Dolly didn't order any coffee and chose a cup of beverage.

"Okay." The waitress looked at Gavin and said, "What about this gentleman? Would you like coffee or beverage?"

Gavin followed his usual style and ordered a flat white.

Before the waitress could reply, Dolly said, "Do you still want to drink coffee at this late hour? Drink something else."

Gavin grew up in the United States, so coffee was no different from boiled water for him.

He was about to say that it didn't matter when Dolly already said to the waiter, "Just give him a cup of warm milk."

The waitress was stunned and glanced at Gavin. He couldn't imagine a man who gave others the impression of a business elite drinking hot milk here.

The waitress was professional, so in the end, he didn't laugh. He nodded and said, "Okay, please wait for a moment."

Gavin had never tried to drink warm milk in a cafe, and his heart was filled with complicated feelings beyond words.

"Forget it. I'll listen to Dolly's words for this one time."

The milk and beverage were soon served. Dolly stirred the drink in the cup and took the initiative to ask, "Gavin, what do you want to say to me?"

Gavin asked directly, "When are you going back to Australia?"

Dolly was stunned for a moment and asked, "Why did you suddenly ask this?" There was an unconcealable disappointment in her tone.

"You came back to Arlington to attend Chris's wedding, but now Brian and Joanne's children are already born," Gavin said, "If you don't go back and keep in contact with me, Joanne and Wendy will be suspicious."

Dolly shook her head. "Considering your current situation, I can't go back."

"I can manage it alone," Gavin said, "You can go back first."

Dolly paused and asked uncertainly, "Gavin, is it because you don't want to see me?"

Gavin looked up and inadvertently saw the sadness in Dolly's eyes.

Somehow, he felt a little uncomfortable and couldn't help but explain, "I didn't mean that. I just... I was afraid that it would be inconvenient for you to stay in Arlington."

"When I recognized you at the airport, I was ready to stay in Arlington," Dolly said, " Wherever you are, it will be convenient for me to stay there. Gavin, this time, I won't leave you alone like what I did 20 years ago."

Gavin avoided Dolly's eager eyes. "... Since you want to stay, you'd better think about how to explain it to Wendy."

Dolly nodded and said, "Leave it to me."

Gavin didn't know what else to say. He looked at the time and stood up. "I'll go back first."

Dolly watched Gavin's car leave, but she didn't return to the hotel immediately.

Gavin's problem had been solved, but she still had to face the problem between her and Wendy caused by a plate of steamed fish.

Tomorrow morning, perhaps she should go to the hospital.

When Dolly made this decision, Wendy was in the operating room of the hospital, fully concentrating on assisting the superior doctor with an operation.

Only when she entered the operating room could she forget the troubles of love.

The feelings she mentioned, including that of affection and kinship.

She had called Dolly "mom" for more than 20 years, but she never knew that her mother could make steamed fish that could win everyone's praise.

She should thank Gavin. If it weren't for him sharing a table with them, she might not have known that Dolly was able to cook.

That was right. She could tell that Dolly had cooked for Gavin's sake.

She didn't blame Dolly, nor was she jealous of Gavin. She just felt uncomfortable.

For so many years, she had been closer to her father. How could she describe her relationship with Dolly? It was not that Dolly didn't care about her, but she was very strict with her. However, in terms of material matters, she had never treated her shabbily.

After being sensible, Wendy had a vague feeling that she and Dolly were not as intimate as ordinary mother and daughter. There was always something between them.

Now that she thought about it, the one between them was Gavin, wasn't it?

No matter why Dolly gave up on Gavin many years ago, Dolly would think of Gavin and feel guilty towards him as she saw Wendy grow up day by day.

Therefore, Dolly would never care about her daughter as much as other mothers did. She would only satisfy her on material matters.

Therefore, it wasn't wrong that she felt that Dolly didn't like her that much.
