Chapter 5 Is Zachary Falling for Rebecca?

"What is it?" Rebecca turned, her gaze cold.

"Why are you here?" Zachary asked, surprised.

"You can bring your sweetheart here, but I can't come?" Rebecca retorted.

"Becky, please don't be like this," Danielle suddenly spoke up, looking at her with teary eyes. "That day when you pushed me—it's really okay. I fell down the stairs, but I wasn't badly hurt. I don't blame you at all."

"Don't be angry with Zach. I know you don't like me, but I can step aside—"

"What are you talking about?" Zachary gripped Danielle's hand tightly. "I said I'd take responsibility for you. You don't need to feel guilty."

"She is the one who should apologize," he added, glancing at Rebecca with his usual coldness and disgust.

Rebecca silently clenched her fists, gritting her teeth as anger burned inside her.

This was just like Danielle, always able to evoke men's sympathy with a few words. Danielle had actually set her up, yet she was playing the victim!

What hurt the most was that the man she'd loved for seven years didn't believe her.

Rebecca wanted to explain but felt it was pointless. No matter what she said, Zachary wouldn't believe her. The feeling of helplessness was devastating.

"I never pushed Danielle, and I won't apologize. That's all I have to say," Rebecca said coldly, turning to leave.

Zachary watched her leave, emotions churning in his eyes.

Rebecca had always denied pushing Danielle, and she didn't seem to be lying. Could he have wrongly accused her? But Danielle said Rebecca pushed her, and Danielle was so kind—how could she lie?

Danielle carefully observed Zachary's reaction. She had noticed that ever since Rebecca asked for a divorce, Zachary seemed unhappy.

Could he be falling for Rebecca?

Just then, a shout rang out in the hall, "It's terrible! Mr. Mendes is having a heart attack! He's collapsed!"

The hall erupted into chaos as people rushed to see what was happening.

Rebecca looked over to see a man in his fifties lying pale-faced on the ground.

Given Mr. Mendes's condition, waiting for an ambulance might be too late.

Rebecca had studied medicine since childhood. Her doctor's instinct wouldn't let her stand by, so she hurried forward, saying, "Let me take a look."

All eyes turned to Rebecca.

Then a woman in a black pantsuit and short brown hair spoke up. "Rebecca Harper? Can you handle this? Everyone knows the Harper family is a medical family, but you're just a pretty face. You never learned any medical skills!"

Soon, a crowd was arguing loudly.

A tall woman then raised her voice above the din of the crowd and said, "I heard this Rebecca got into medical school through connections. She has no real ability." At these words, everyone looked at Rebecca with disdain.

Rebecca clenched her fists. 'Getting into medical school through connections? That was true, but it wasn't me. It was—'

She suddenly looked over at Danielle nearby and smiled sarcastically.

"Don't let her treat Mr. Mendes! Get her out of here! What can she do?" said another person. The crowd's shouts surrounded Rebecca, and someone even pushed her maliciously.

Rebecca stumbled back a couple of steps, blocked by the sea of people.

She looked at all the hostile faces, frowning deeply.

Suddenly, a confident voice rang out, drawing everyone's attention. "I'm a doctor. I'll help!"

It was Danielle.

The surrounding crowd erupted in applause.

"It's Miss Rogers! She's a cardiac surgeon. Mr. Mendes is saved," a man said.

"Miss Rogers is amazing, beautiful and kind-hearted!" a young woman in a red sequin dress chimed in.

Danielle seemed to be a heaven-sent doctor, surrounded by an aura of admiration. The crowd instantly put her on a pedestal.

In contrast, Rebecca, who had stepped forward first, was now treated like a sewer rat—everyone wanted her gone.

Danielle crouched beside Mr. Mendes, finding his nitroglycerin pills in his pocket. She instructed, "Please, everyone, step back. Don't crowd too close."

Without hesitation, Danielle gave Mr. Mendes the nitroglycerin and started performing CPR.

The charity gala taking place at the Montra Grand Hotel that day had attracted many influential people, making it a perfect opportunity for Danielle to showcase herself.

She had to prove to the Adams family that she, Danielle, was no less than Rebecca!

As time ticked by, everyone grew anxious.

Just as everyone was holding their breath, someone exclaimed, "He moved! He moved!"

Mr. Mendes's fingers twitched, and he slowly opened his eyes, though his face remained pale.

Right away, the room filled with loud cheers.

"Thanks to Miss Rogers. She’s incredible! Good thing we didn't let that useless woman mess things up!" said the silver-haired man.

Danielle stood up, basking in everyone's admiring gazes, then looked toward Zachary.

Zachary was gazing at her tenderly, which meant everything to her.

Danielle's eyes quickly darted to Rebecca, "Thank you all for your recognition, but I know Becky is also very capable!"

"What's so great about that worthless woman?" a man in glasses asked.

"Miss Rogers is the real medical genius—so amazing!" said the woman in the pantsuit.

"Miss Rogers, could we get your contact information?" said the man with silver hair.

Zachary, who had been silent for a while, suddenly spoke up coldly, "Don't get any ideas about my woman."

Danielle blushed instantly, calling out shyly, "Zach..."

Zachary gently ruffled her hair, his eyes soft.

Rebecca lowered her head, feeling bitter inside.

Being doubted and criticized didn't upset her.

But Zachary acknowledging Danielle as his woman in front of her hurt more than death. Even though they were about to divorce, why did it still hurt so much?

Danielle smiled, enjoying the thrill of being praised.

In the past, when she and Rebecca were friends, Rebecca always stole the spotlight. Now she was outshining Rebecca. She would take everything from Rebecca!

Just then, Mr. Mendes, who had just woken up, suddenly started convulsing.

"Oh no! Something's wrong with Mr. Mendes! Miss Rogers, please check on him!" said a woman in a black and white polka dot outfit.

Danielle immediately went to him. Mr. Mendes was clearly struggling to breathe. He clutched his throat, his face contorted in pain.

Was this a complication from his heart? Or a breathing problem?

Danielle didn't understand. She kept checking, her actions becoming frantic and disorganized.

Rebecca looked up, assessing Mr. Mendes's condition and glancing at the clock on the wall. There probably wasn't much time left.

She stopped a passing server and borrowed the pen from his pocket.

"Miss Rogers, can you handle this?" asked the silver-haired man, starting to question Danielle’s ability.

"I—I'm still checking," Danielle replied, obviously nervous, her voice shaking.

Although she was a cardiac surgeon, she had to admit that in recent years, her focus had been entirely on Zachary. She hadn't really studied and practiced properly at all.

Just as the atmosphere grew tense, Danielle was suddenly pushed aside.

A cold female voice rang out, "Move!"

It was none other than Rebecca!
