When they got close, Eliana suddenly remembered the baby. Her mood instantly changed. She quickly pulled away.
"I—I just showered. You go ahead," she said quickly.
She hopped down from the counter.
But Samuel caught her arm, his eyes intense. "We can shower again after. I'll help."
Eliana stood firm, pulling her arm free.
"Not tonight," she said firmly, "Take your shower. I'll be in bed."
She slipped past him out of the bathroom.
Samuel wasn't the type to push.
With their ten-year age gap, he always tried to be considerate of her feelings.
If she wasn't in the mood, he wouldn't insist. He went ahead with his shower.
In the bedroom, Eliana thought about the pregnancy test hidden in the closet. She was still torn about telling him.
'Should I just tell him? Would he be happy? What if he's not?'
As she got up to get the test, there was a knock. Nora's voice came through the door.
"Mrs. Nelson? Is Mr. Nelson there?"
Eliana put on her robe and opened the door. "What's up, Nora?"
Nora held out a phone, saying, "Mr. Nelson left his phone at dinner. It keeps ringing. What should I do?" She offered it to Eliana. "Could you give it to him?"
"Oh, sure," she said, "no problem."
Right as Eliana took it, it started ringing again.
The name "Chloe" lit up the screen, and her stomach dropped.
She'd played games on Samuel's phone and checked his calls before, but never saw this name.
'Who's Chloe?'
The ringing stopped. Just as Eliana sat on the bed with the phone, Samuel came out in a towel.
The phone started buzzing again.
She held it out with an edge in her voice. "It's for you."
Samuel took it and checked the screen. He frowned but answered.
Eliana really wanted to know who this Chloe was.
She stood up and quietly moved closer, trying to hear.
Samuel saw what she was doing but didn't move away.
A woman's sweet voice came through clearly:
"Sam, can you come over? I twisted my ankle and it's killing me. I can't even move."
When Eliana heard this woman calling her husband "Sam" so casually, her knees almost gave out.
What hurt even more was Samuel's gentle response: "Sure, I'll be right there."
Samuel hung up and turned to her. "Go to bed, Eliana. Won't be long."
She couldn't believe what she was hearing. Rage bubbled up inside her.
"Seriously? You're going to see her?" Eliana tried keeping her voice steady. "She says she twisted her ankle and calls you over, and you're actually going?" This was beyond crazy to her.
Samuel didn't bother explaining. He put his phone down and started getting dressed.
Eliana followed him around, getting more worked up by the second.
"Samuel, what's going on? Who's this Chloe? Is she that woman from earlier? What's the deal with you two? Talk to me."
Samuel finished dressing without a word. He pulled on his jacket and shrugged. "Don't worry about it," he said, patting her shoulder. "Don't wait up."
As he headed for the door, Eliana blocked his path. "Don't I deserve an explanation? Why are you running off to some other woman in the middle of the night? What am I supposed to think?"
'This can't be happening.'
'My husband's always been so good to me. He wouldn't dump me for another woman.'
Eliana desperately tried convincing herself.
But Samuel was dead set on leaving.
Seeing his wife both angry and desperate for answers, Samuel pressed his lips together. Though it killed him to say it, he finally dropped the bomb: "Eliana, you need to prepare yourself. We're heading to the courthouse soon to file for divorce."
