The door to Leo’s office swung open, and Mr. Andrew paced anxiously outside. Each time he caught sight of Sophie, he offered an awkward smile before quickly averting his gaze.
Eventually, Sophie lost her patience. “Mr. Andrew, get in here!” she called out.
Mr. Andrew had been waiting for this moment. He hadn’t slept the previous night, wrestling with how to break the news to Sophie. While Leo’s resignation seemed like the best course of action, the potential fallout weighed heavily on him. He was torn about whether to reveal Leo's departure or keep it under wraps, as Leo had requested.
But time was running out, Sophie would find out eventually, and if she discovered he’d kept it a secret, his career could be in jeopardy. After much deliberation, he resolved to proceed with the resignation and inform Sophie, hoping to avoid offending anyone.
Entering the office with a heavy heart, he greeted Sophie. “You’re here.”
“What’s wrong with you? Why are you sneaking around?” she demanded.
Mr. Andrew closed the door, turning to face her, his expression grave. “Sophie, something big has happened.”
Sophie’s heart sank. Instinctively, she knew it was about Leo. “What happened? Be specific!”
“Leo resigned.”
A wave of shock washed over her, leaving her momentarily speechless. Then, without warning, she sprang to her feet and grabbed Mr. Andrew’s collar. “You forced him to leave, didn’t you?”
“Wait! Sophie, calm down! Let me explain!”
Her grip tightened. “Tell me now! Did you push him out? Do you want to get fired?”
“No, it wasn’t me!” Mr. Andrew protested, pointing upward. “It’s the superiors who want Leo gone. I had nothing to do with it! If I were responsible, I wouldn’t dare tell you!”
“What’s really going on? Explain clearly!”
There was no time for further explanations, the personnel department was already processing Leo’s resignation. By that afternoon, he would no longer be an employee of Eastwin Global Ltd.
Mr. Andrew rushed through the details, hardly caring if Sophie absorbed the information. His mission was complete.
Without hesitation, Sophie burst through the door, kicking it open with such force that it shattered into pieces.
Mr. Andrew smiled, convinced he had done the right thing.
Moments later, Sophie returned to her desk and grabbed the phone. “Where is Leo’s resignation letter?” she demanded.
“It’s under review by the financial department,” the secretary replied.
Before the secretary could finish, Sophie hung up and called headquarters. “Who’s handling Leo’s resignation letter?”
“May I ask who’s calling?” the voice on the line responded, wary.
“I’m Sophie. Where is Leo’s resignation letter? Who’s reviewing it?”
“I’m sorry, but I can’t disclose that information. It’s confidential.”
Realizing the caller didn’t recognize her, Sophie tossed the phone aside and stormed out of the building, the sound of honking horns filling the air outside.
The secretary, perplexed, wondered who this Sophie was, acting as if she were an executive. The staff at headquarters often viewed themselves as superior to those in regular departments, treating them with little respect. Sophie’s demanding tone had caught them off guard.
Within ten minutes, the doors of headquarters swung open again, and an angry Sophie strode in.
“I’m Sophie. Who took my call earlier?”
The staff member stood, taken aback. “Miss, please lower your voice. I answered your call. How can I assist you?”
Sophie seized her collars. “I’ll ask again: who is reviewing Leo’s resignation letter? Tell me now, or I’ll make you regret it!”
Trembling under Sophie’s intensity, the woman pointed toward a colleague.
Releasing her grip, Sophie rushed to the designated woman. “Did you approve his resignation?”
“Not yet. I’m reviewing his travel expenses. It’ll be done shortly.”
“No! Withdraw it! Withdraw his resignation!”
“I can’t do that without following company protocol. If everything checks out, I have to approve it as soon as possible. I’m sorry, but there’s nothing I can do.”
Sophie pushed her aside and sat at the desk, trying to navigate the human resource system. Others in the office paused, some dialing security, while others reported the commotion to their superiors.
Before long, security guards arrived, encircling Sophie.
“Stop right there!” a commanding voice boomed. The guards turned to see James Donovan, the president’s secretary, waving them back.
Seeing the situation, James feared Sophie might escalate the chaos further. He stepped forward, gathering his courage. “Sophie, please stop this. Let’s talk about it at home, alright?”
The room fell silent as everyone watched James, humbled in front of Sophie.
Sophie, frustrated by the complexities of the human resource system, ordered, “You! Come here and delete Leo’s resignation letter, now!”
The woman glanced at James for support. “Sophie, you can’t just—”
Without hesitation, Sophie stared at James in the eyes. “You’re getting bolder now, huh? Did you forget who you are? Do you think you run this place?”
James Donovan was taken aback, a fleeting sadness crossing his face. Steeling himself, he instructed the woman, “Do as Ms. Sophie says.”
The tension in the hall was palpable as the woman, trembling, operated the computer. Under Sophie’s watchful gaze, she deleted Leo’s resignation letter.
Just before exiting, Sophie turned to the staff, her voice dripping with menace. “Whoever dares approve Leo’s resignation will regret it. Try me!”
With that, she strode out confidently. Moments later, a series of sharp knocks echoed from William Delaney’s office, followed by Sophie’s furious voice. “William Delaney, open the door!”
William, fearing her wrath, remained silent inside. After a moment of persistent knocking, Sophie kicked the door hard, frustration boiling over.
Despite her rough demeanor, Sophie had asserted her authority within the company today. William had always worried that her inexperience would undermine her influence, but it seemed his concerns were unfounded, no one dared defy her now.
The future owner of the company was hot-headed, ready to unleash her fury on anyone who crossed her. She was the polar opposite of her cultured father.
“Knock, knock. Mr. William, it’s me!”
The door cracked open. Nervously, William peered out. “Did Sophie leave?”
“Yes,” came the reply.
Only then did William feel safe enough to open the door for James Donovan.
“Mr. William, what should we do now?” James asked, taking a seat.
William managed a bitter smile. “What can we do? Let’s go with the flow. She’s not a child anymore, and I can’t control her—or plan to. Let her do as she wishes.”
James felt a pang of grievance.
“Are we still proceeding with the reformation?” he inquired hesitantly.
After a moment’s thought, William waved his hand dismissively. “Try it out in other departments. The telecom department resumes as usual.”
Once outside the president’s office, James instructed Andrew to continue operations and to keep the consulting line intact.
Shortly after finishing with Andrew, James received a call from Sophie’s mother.
“Hello, madam!” he answered.
“I apologize on Sophie’s behalf,” her mother said directly. “She overstepped this time, and I hope you’ll forgive her.”
James was puzzled that Sophie’s mother knew about the incident. After a moment’s reflection, he realized that despite not being involved in company affairs, she had her own informants keeping her updated.
