In the room, Evelyn had finished applying the ointment, but the pain on her thigh had not eased one bit. This made her feel so upset and angry that she couldn't calm down. There were a few times when she wanted to take the scalpel out and slash a few cuts on Theodore's leg in order to reduce her anger.
However, she was still rational and knew very well the consequences of doing so.
In order to distract herself, she got off from the bed reluctantly. She limped to the sofa and sat down. Her leg hurt a lot.
She wanted to take the remote control to switch on the television, but worried that Ethan might see through their facade upon hearing the sound of the television. Then, she wanted to play with her phone but once again learned that her phone was left in her bag by the bed. She had no choice but to curl up on the sofa, close her eyes, and took a nap.
She was very hungry.
She had not even had two spoonfuls of rice when she was dragged upstairs by that Fox Kingsley. After tossing next to him for so long, she was extremely exhausted.
It would be nice if she could order food delivery. She would definitely order a large rice with black pepper tenderloin meat and a creamy tomato soup.
Oh, this sounds so delicious.
However...
Now all she could do now was to swallow her own saliva.
Huh? It smells so good!
She quickly opened her eyes and was instantly stunned when she saw three or four steaming hot dishes on the coffee table.
Was she hallucinating from hunger?
Theodore found her dumbfounded face very funny. He held a bowl of white rice to her and asked, "Do you want to eat?"
Evelyn realized that it wasn't her imagination. Seeing that he was about to pull it back, she quickly snatched the rice bowl from him.
Only a fool wouldn't eat.
Theodore took a small stool and sat opposite her. He didn't pick up his utensils and only watched her eat and said, "I helped you apply for a day off, so you don't have to go to work tomorrow."
Evelyn, who was already angry, didn't appreciate what he did and rolled her eyes, "Who asked you to take the day off? What has my work got to do with you? The agreement did not mention that you can interfere with my work!"
"As you please then. However, I have things to settle at the company tomorrow. I have to go to the company early in the morning and won't have time to accompany you for breakfast."
"I'm not used to having someone accompany me for breakfast."
Theodore wasn't even angry. He paused and advised, "Remember to apply the ointment tomorrow."
"Thank you, Mr. Kingsley, for your concern."
"Mr. Kingsley?"
Evelyn understood his meaning and didn't say anything. She lowered her head and ate.
She was still angry. She was already playing nice by not calling him Fox Kingsley. Don't expect her to call him Theo or hubby.
"You're still angry?" Theodore smiled. He picked up his fork and served her some food.
Evelyn immediately picked up the food he served her and threw them into the trash can.
"Isn't pinching you better than throwing you onto the bed to rape you?"
Evelyn saw that his eyes were locked on her thigh. She blushed and pulled the hem of her nightdress lower as she warned him, "If you dare cross the line, don't blame me for fighting back!"
"The knife is to fight against enemies. How can you point it at your own husband?"
When she saw that Theodore had the scalpel she had hidden under her pillow in his hand, Evelyn was momentarily shocked and stood up immediately. Then, she grabbed the scalpel with her hand.
"Grandpa is very astute. About tonight, I really had no choice but to do this. Don't worry, it won't happen again." Theodore wasn't used to apologizing to others or lowering his head. It was rare for him to speak this gently. To tell the truth, even he himself was a little surprised.
"I just want to coax this little girl to cooperate with me and fool Grandpa." This was what he told himself.
Evelyn knew the reason he did this. At that moment, she felt like there were traces of apology in his words and was therefore less resistant toward him. However, she still asked angrily, "Why didn't you tell me there was a switch for the glass wall?"
"I said you can switch off the lights."
"But you let me choose between two options."
"These two methods do actually work, it's just that you chose the more stupid one."
Faced with his argument, Evelyn was speechless.
"Grandpa's men visited your parents this afternoon."
"What?" Evelyn wasn't concerned about being angry with him anymore. She asked anxiously, "He hasn't done anything to my parents, has he?"
"For the time being, no. He wanted to prove the validity of our relationship through them. However, there is nothing Grandpa hates more than people deceiving him. If he finds something out, he will not let that person go."
Hearing the threat in his words, Evelyn felt very upset.
She must have owed this grandpa and grandson in her past life.
Theodore's voice softened again. "You don't have to worry too much. As long as you listen to what I say, I will not let Grandpa trouble them."
Evelyn angrily waved her scalpel and said, "You tease and bully me. Am I not waiting for my death if I continue to obediently listen to you?"
"It's not as serious as you make it out to be. We're both adults that occasionally joke..." Watching Evelyn's face turn sour, Theodore quickly changed his words. "Since you dislike jokes, I'll stop joking then. But the knife is really not meant to be pointed at your own people. If you must, then point it at an outsider."
Evelyn exclaimed, "You want me to use the knife against your grandpa?"
"Of course not."
"Charlotte?" When she saw him nod, Evelyn's eyes were filled with terror. "You don't want me to kill her, do you?"
Theodore threw her a disdainful look. "Do you dare to kill a person?"
"I dare to dissect a body, but I dare not kill a person."
"Then why are you talking about killing her? She dared to be so rude to my wife today, so I must teach her a lesson."
Evelyn blushed when she heard the word 'wife'. She mumbled, "There are no outsiders here. Why are you so affectionate?"
In fact, she felt good at the phrase 'helping out my wife speak out', but didn't say it out loud.
"It's only when you get used to it will it be natural. That way, no one would see through it. You should be like me too..."
Knowing how he was going to finish the sentence, Evelyn quickly interrupted and asked, "Right, how can a gentleman like you lay a hand on a woman?"
"Whoever dare to bully my wife should be taught a lesson, regardless of age and sex." Actually, Theodore didn't expect himself to ever lay hand on a woman. However, when he entered the room and saw Charlotte treat Evelyn like that, he grew angry and went forward to counterattack Charlotte.
When he mentioned the word 'wife' again, Evelyn decided to change the topic. She said, "Well, how do you plan to avenge me ?"
"I'll tell you when the time comes."
Seeing that he was being mysterious, Evelyn pouted her lips. "Don't tell me you're just saying that for fun? She's your cousin after all."
Theodore's face darkened. "Who said that she's my cousin?"
"She said it herself! Isn't it?"
"I don't have any siblings, not even cousins."
"Turns out she's an imposter." No wonder she slapped me so hard.
Evelyn heaved a sigh of relief and said, "I was thinking, if your grandpa is so clever, why would he let his own grandson marry his close relative? That is not good parenting!"
Theodore suddenly laughed at her. "You and I meet the conditions of good parenting, so why don't we..."
"Oh yes, what conditions did your mother put in place for you with your grandpa as executor?"
Seeing that she was trying to change the topic again, Theodore didn't pursue the topic anymore. Instead, he responded seriously, "My mother wanted me to marry and have my own children before I turn thirty-two.
Since they were going to keep playing a fake couple, there were some things that she ought to know.
"Why thirty-two years old?"
"The man betrayed her when he was thirty-two years old. She wanted to use this to alert me."
"Which man?" Evelyn quickly responded. "Your father?"
Noting that he had nodded, she then asked, "Where is your father now?"
"He's dead."
"I'm sorry."
"He's been dead for twenty years. I'm used to it."
Dead for twenty years?
She connected the dots. Since he mentioned that his father had betrayed his mother, Evelyn felt that there must be a story to his parents' death. However, she didn't want to pry too much. After some thought, she changed the topic and asked, "How old are you now?"
"Thirty-two."
"What? You're already thirty-two?"
He didn't look thirty-two at all!
Before that, Evelyn had addressed him as 'uncle' just to purposely annoy him, she didn't expect that he was indeed already an uncle!
It turned out that he had been an orphan since the age of twelve. No wonder he was so sloppy—he didn't have parents to teach him.
Just as Evelyn was expressing her sympathy toward Theodore, he leaned over with a smile on his face and teased her, "If the age difference between a man and a woman is ten years, they are a golden match."
"Only a ghost will be a golden match with you." Evelyn thought.
In the blink of an eye, Evelyn put away all her feelings of sympathy. She pointed at the mess on the coffee table and said, "Clean up the mess." Without even caring whether he agreed or not, she limped into the bathroom to wash up.
Through the glass wall, she could see Theodore carefully clearing up the leftovers. Thinking of his past and of him slapping Charlotte for her sake, she realized that he wasn't that detestable after all.
After Evelyn finished washing up, Theodore had already cleaned up the mess and walked into the bathroom.
Evelyn was half-lying on the bed as she watched him brush his teeth through the glass wall. Suddenly, she was very curious about him.
A twelve-year-old boy who lost his parents overnight—what a blow that must have been! She had no idea how he had made it through at that time.
He did have his grandpa, but a grandpa could never take the place of parents. Moreover, his grandpa was so strict and overbearing. He must have suffered a lot in the past.
As Theodore finished brushing, Evelyn quickly stopped looking at him. Burying herself into the pillows in the middle of the bed, she turned around and pretended to be asleep.
Just a moment later, Theodore's alluring voice rang in her ears. "Little Evade, don't ever fall in love with me. I'm a poison that has no cure. You will become ill just thinking of me."
"Bah!" When Evelyn turned around, Theodore already lay down on the bed with a big smile on his face. She immediately snorted and said, "How can you smile when something this big has happened to your company? You still have the heart to tease others."
Knowing that she was talking about the crime in the forest, Theodore disagreed and said, "There are so many people in the company. Some things are bound to happen. Moreover, this case has nothing to do with the company, only that the deceased is a company employee. It does not affect the company at all."
At that time, his tone was light. However, a few months later, he wouldn't dare say that this case had no effect on his company anymore, because this was just a small prelude to the opponent's revenge.
He seemed to understand the case quite well. Guessing that Eric might have mentioned something to him, Evelyn propped up her body with interest and asked, "Is there any progress with the case?"
She was only a new forensic doctor and her understanding of the case was limited to the autopsy.
"I don't have a clue."
"What? So many days have passed and there's still no clue? Would it become an unsolved case?"
"It isn't impossible."
"Well, let us talk about it..."
"Go to sleep."
Theodore switched off the light and Evelyn could only swallow back what she had to say as she lay down silently.
Maybe it was because Theodore was sleeping on the other side of the bed, but she didn't dare to relax herself. Or maybe it was because of the change of environment that she couldn't adapt to. Or maybe she was missing her parents. Or maybe it wasn't late enough. All in all, although she was very tired today, she still couldn't sleep at all. There were so many things in her head that she couldn't solve nor stop thinking about.
She tossed and turned until she finally fell asleep after midnight.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
A wave of loud knocks woke Evelyn. She realized that it was already dawn and there wasn't a trace of Theodore next to her. When the loud door knocks showed no sign of stopping, she went over and opened the door nervously.
Standing outside the door was Charlotte with a bruise on her face. Although she had applied a thick foundation over it, she still couldn't cover it up.
"Grandpa has instructed you to go downstairs immediately." Her tone was commanding. As soon as she finished, she turned around and walked away.
The word 'Grandpa' had already made Evelyn very nervous. She quickly phoned Theodore but he didn't pick up. Thinking of the proud face and 'bear the consequences yourself' look that Charlotte wore, Evelyn had a hunch that a huge storm was coming. Despite that, she did not dare to not go. After sending a message to Theodore, she changed her clothes and anxiously walked down the stairs.
